INSTALL LIGHTING FIXTURES/SWITCHES

Learning Objectives:
After reading this INFORMATION SHEET, YOU MUST be able to:
1. Prepare the selected appropriate tools, equipment and materials to
be use..
2. Perform the correct procedures for installation of lighting fixtures
and switches.
Introduction:
Installing and wiring a light fixture is not a very difficult task, but does need
to be approached with a degree of caution. Electricity is involved and if you
allow it to it can give a nasty shock to the careless worker. Never take
chances around electricity.
The first step is always to turn off the current. Turn the light on and find
the correct circuit breaker in your breaker panel. If necessary turn them off
one at a time until the light goes out. Do not depend on the light switch to
turn off the power to the light; someone else could turn it back on, especially
if it is only one of two or more switches controlling the same light fixture.

A. Tools for Installing lighting fixtures and switches.

There are only a few tools and supplies necessary for the task as follows:
1. Screwdrivers. Either or both a flat tip and a Phillips tip screwdriver
may be needed: older screws in an existing fixture often need a flat tip,
while newer screws are usually a Phillips tip.

2. Wire strippers. If a new installation wire strippers will be needed. If

you are replacing an existing fixture, the wires should be already
stripped.

3. Pliers. Pliers may be needed to tighten supporting nuts on the light
fixture

4. Wire nuts. Probably supplied with the new fixture, but if not a few
wire nuts will be needed.

5. Multi Tester - multi meter or a multi tester, also known as a VOM

(volt-ohm-milliammeter), is an electronic measuring instrument that
combines several measurement functions in one unit. A typical multi
meter can measure voltage, current, and resistance.

B. Procedure in Installing light fixture/switches.

1. Test the wires inside the electrical cable that extends from the wall with
a voltage tester to ensure that the power is off. If the fixture is being
attached to a new circuit, wiring the circuit into the electrical box should
be done after the fixture has been installed. If you're replacing the old
fixture on an existing circuit, the power should have been turned off
before the old fixture was removed, but double-checking the wires is
always a good idea. A shock from a 110-volt line can kill you.
2. Strip one inch of insulation from the wires on the light fixture with wire
strippers. If the cable inside the wall is new, strip two inches of
sheathing from the end of the cable and one inch of insulation from the
wires inside the cable.
3. Place the bare end of the black wire from the cable in the wall with the
bare end of the black wire from the light fixture. Twist the two ends
together three or four times with a pair of pliers. Connect the white wire
from the cable to the white wire from the light fixture by twisting them
together with the pliers.

4. Place plastic twist caps on the ends of the wires and twist them two or
three times. These caps secure the connected wires and provide an
insulated barrier around them.

5. Wrap the bare ground wire from the cable in the wall around the ground
screw on the fixture, if the fixture has one. Twist the ground wire from
the cable with the ground wire from the fixture. The ground wire on the
fixture can be bare or covered in green insulation.

6. Tuck the wiring into the electrical box inside the wall and attach the
light fixture to the wall.
