Abstract - The disposal of domestic wastewater without global concern where the environmental impact by the
any treatment into the drainage systems leads to the population also sets high demands to the treatment of
pollution. So with increasing pressure on water resources waste produced by the community.
worldwide, now there is a need to consider recycling and Moto of this project is to suggest economical & effective
reuse options for wastewater waste water treatment system to treat the liquid waste

Maharashtra is released in the nearby natural stream 1.1 Busyland Commercial City

reach to 10,00,000 liters/day of water after expansion of Busyland Commercial City (BCC) is a one-of-its-kind

Commercial City itself. The conclusion of the project was
made for the selection of effective & economical waste water
treatment system for the treatment of sewage of Busyland
Commercial City.
From the comparison made in different waste water
treatment techniques, Rotating Biological Contactor (RBC)
treatment was found more feasible in terms of land, initial
cost and maintenance cost, etc. The quality of effluent of
RBC is satisfactory for the purpose of gardening and other
maintenance work of Busyland Commercial City. This
process also has a moderate detention period of influent
which will help to reduce the major problem of odour. The
sludge production of RBC plant is minimal and hence have a
comparatively lesser maintenance cost than the other
treatments. Hence, after considering all aspects, Rotating
Biological Contactor plant was suggested for the proper
treatment of waste water of Busyland Commercial City.

BBC the performance of various aerobic and anaerobic
treatment systems such as oxidation pond, activated sludge
process, rotating biological contactor, trickling filter, up
flow anaerobic sludge blanket, constructed wetland,
moving bed biological reactor, were studied.

A sample of waste water was collected from the BCC

for the purpose of testing in order to understand the actual
quality of waste water of BCC. Various test were performed
on the sample and the characteristics of wastewater
generated from BCC were as follows

Table 1: Characteristics of wastewater generated from BCC

Properties of waste water Values

BOD of water 140 mg/lit

COD of water 200 mg/lit
pH of water 9.3
TSS of water 330 mg/lit

3. Comparison of Various Treatment Technologies

The performance of waste water treatment systems
varies with different parameters. Different wastewater
treatment systems were compared on the basis of
parameters such as removal of BOD, COD, pH TSS, land
required for construction of treatment unit, initial and
operational cost, HRT, etc. The comparison is tabulated in
table 2.

From above graph, MBBR have the maximum

percentage of COD removal at 90%, then followed by
Activated Sludge Process at 88%
efficiency and requires huge land. Also activated sludge
process is not recommended for Busyland because of its
heavy space requirement. As compared to the above
trickling filter is most efficient although the BOD removal
efficiency is less as compared to above but its operational
cost is almost negligible. Hence, MBBR tends to be the most
effective treatment for the waste water of Busyland
Commercial City, but it is the most costly treatment and
requires a heavy maintenance.

Rotating Biological Contactor (RBC) treatment is more

feasible in terms of land, initial cost and maintenance cost
as well. The quality of effluent of RBC is also satisfactory for
the purpose of gardening and other maintenance work of
Busyland commercial city. This process also has a moderate
detention period of influent which will help to reduce the
major problem of odour. Also the sludge production of RBC
plant is minimal and hence have a comparatively lesser
maintenance cost than the other treatments.

Hence, after considering all aspects, Rotating Biological

Contactor plant is suggested for the proper treatment of
waste water of Busyland Commercial City.
