Erosional velocity is the velocity at which erosion or excessive wear on elbows will start to

occur. For single-phase systems it has more or less been ignored, most likely due to the lack
of readily available experimental data explaining or verifying the phenomenon. Plant
experience has shown that velocity and the corrosiveness of a fluid are directly related. For
example, a liquid stream with H2S present will create a much higher rate of erosion at an
elbow than on a straight portion of line. The sweeping effect of the stream as it travels A spring will probably be
through the elbow removes the protective layer laid down by the action of the H2S with iron. required for top suction
Also excessive erosion has been experienced at high velocities with very corrosive fluids, and discharge line when
such as sulfuric acid and hot potassium carbonate. A rule of thumb used successfully on
some projects for these types of systems has been to limit velocity to 50 ft/sec (15.2 m/sec) -Pump nozzle size is two
1/2 or more sizes smaller than
or 150/ 1 / 2 (where  is in lb/ft3), whichever is less the line and valve sizes.

-Pump nozzle is the same

size as the line and valve
ratings or 300# or more.
