Summary

The results highlighted that in every war that the soldiers encounter, there are

negative changes that occur; physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually. The

participants developed anger issues and hyper-alertness. Every time there are flashbacks

of the Marawi battle, the participants feel emotional. Regardless of all the negative

impacts of the Marawi battle, the participants were able to establish more intimate

relationship with God, encompassed patriotism, built a stronger bond with their troops,

obtained closer family ties, improved their performances at work and developed a positive

outlook in life.

Recommendation:

Recommendations are offered for study participants, family of the participants,

healthcare provider, and future researchers.

For Study Participants:

Being familiar with your own condition is essential. Accept that you need help. But

in order to help you out, you need to ask for it. Mental Health Law has already been

established in the Philippines, stigma of having any mental health issue will surely subside

since the Filipino are starting embrace mental health awareness. There’s nothing to be

afraid of. Healing begins with acceptance.

For Family of the Study Participants:

Be supportive and be patient with them. Your presence is crucial. Being just with

them will make them feel better.

For Healthcare Provider:

The researchers recommended that stress debriefing should become a part of the

routine evaluation for the soldiers before they are going to deploy to a particular unfamiliar

provinces. The researchers believed that stress debriefing is provided after being

deployed to a traumatic encounter, but assessment of the soldier’s mental health should

be a priority as well before going to deployment. The researchers believe that this

intervention will surely help in decreasing the incidence of combat stress reaction among

Filipino soldiers.

CHAPTER I

Introduction

In a study conducted by the World Health Organization (WHO) regarding

guidelines on mental health care after trauma in 21 countries, the results showed more

than 10% of respondents reported witnessing violence (21.8%), exposure to war (16.2%)

and etc.(WHO, 2013).

Combat related trauma, break like an epidemic at Philippine military camps after

the battle for the amity of Marawi City. The 300 military casualties of Marawi Crisis are

currently on treatment at Camp Evangelista Station Hospital (CESH) in Iligan City for post

trauma issues. Eighteen soldiers were admitted at AFP Health Service Command

Department of Mental Health Behavioral Science Ward 23-25 to seek medical assistance

after having been diagnosed with combat related-PTSD.

Combat stress is an expected and predictable reaction to combat related

experiences of military personnel after exposure to arms battle and having survived in

a combat zone where people are under constant physiological stress and

psychological stress. (Cmdr. Carrie Kennedy, PhD, ABPP) This is also known as

combat-related trauma. The trauma experienced of a civilian is called as Acute Stress

Reaction.

9
Arellano University
College of Nursing

Combat-related trauma is manifested by hyper startle, hyper vigilance, intrusive

memories, sleep difficulties, irritability, anger issues, and avoidance of things that

remind the traumatic experience. The symptoms of combat related trauma varies from

every case, the clinical manifestations above are the most common ones and usually

they don’t last for a month.

Combat-related Trauma is the precursor of Post-traumatic stress disorder

(PTSD). Post-traumatic stress disorder is a mental health condition that is characterized

by increased activity in the amygdala resulting to hypersensitivity to small triggers and the

shrinking of hippocampus causes difficulty in distinguishing memories.

PTSD is triggered by a terrifying event — either by experiencing it or by witnessing

it. Before the symptoms are classified as that of PTSD, they should persist for over a

month. Most of the time, treatment of PTSD requires hospitalization and long-term

psychological therapy.

According to studies, there are three critical steps to be had to recover from PTSD

and Combat Related Trauma, as follows: Developing a trusting relationship with a

professional, telling one’s experience of trauma in the context of therapy; and developing

or reviving one’s connection to family, friends, and community.

Cognitive Behavior Therapy and Exposure therapy are the common interventions

given to a military personnel who suffered from Combat stress reaction.

10
Arellano University
College of Nursing

Cognitive Behavior Therapy is about the following : (ABCT) way of acting (like learning

to talk about feared experiences), way of feeling (like helping a person be less scared,

less depressed, less anxious), way of thinking (like learning to face memories), way of

dealing with physical or medical problems (like confronting depression without using

alcohol).

However, Exposure therapy is about reliving the traumatic experience but it’s

therapeutic effect was based on the patients’ response.

On June 21, 2018, Pres. Rodrigo Duterte signed Republic Act 11036 – Mental

Health Law. The law mandates to provide mental health services from tertiary hospitals

to the barangay health centers. Mental Health facilities will be improved and mental health

awareness will be promoted through education at campuses and lectures at market

places. The PhilHealth also provides coverage for mental health services such as

psychiatric consultations and medicines particularly acute mental disorder and behavioral

disorder at a package rate of Php 7,800.00.

“Health is finally here. The Mental Health Law, cements the government’s

commitment to a more holistic approach to health care: without sound mental health there

can be no genuine physical health,” said Sen. Risa Hontiveros.

Ian Coate was once quoted: “we expect our soldiers to fight our battles. Later, we

should support them as they fight theirs”. The war within still continues. Our soldiers

aren’t home yet and not all wounds are visible.

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Background of the Study

Choosing one’s battle is always a wise move but soldiers don’t have the choice.

For the past few years, the Armed Forces of the Philippines’ (AFP) defense have

continuously been challenged by several local terrorists and they have been exposed to

incidents of extreme trauma. The most recent crisis that the Philippines faced was the

warfare against ISIS led by Maute group which caused great strain in the nation’s security.

The five-month long battle against the Maute group left significant battle wounds among

Filipino soldiers. Although the battle has already ended, the soldiers are still raising their

red flags in a changed setting, which is in their mind. The battle against a sick mind seems

to be the toughest among all. Another refining will be done to the soldiers but instead of

being led by their commanders, medical professionals will be the one who are going to

lead them. For now, combat-related trauma became an alarming issue in mental health

among Filipino soldiers.

The recent crisis, led to the increase in incidence of combat-related trauma among

Filipino soldiers. The study conducted is concerning the quality of life of Filipino soldiers

after they were involved in combat-related trauma during their exposure to Marawi crisis

and previous battle encounters with the terrorists, either local or international who tried to

break the peace and order of the country particularly in the Mindanao provinces.

Combat related trauma is a common case, yet a serious health issue among

military personnel who are returning from various combat missions. Combat related

12
Arellano University
College of Nursing

trauma disturbs many features of one's life, including the ability to function normally in

personal, social and family aspects of life.

This study attempted to understand the quality of life of the Filipino soldiers who

had combat related trauma. The study explained the quality of life of the Filipino soldiers

with Combat-related Trauma, through discovering and identifying the evolving symptoms,

personal coping strategies, personal and relationship changes that occurred due to

combat-related trauma.

The research conducted is likewise aimed to help the future researchers, students,

and health care providers understand the client's viewpoint in order to improve

participants’ quality of life. Combat related trauma has a profound influence on the

affected individuals, yet it should not necessarily prevent them from leading a meaningful

and fulfilling life.

The research paradigm shown how the researchers assumed the process

of how the study will be conducted. The researchers used Purposive sampling which

focuses on the individuals who possesses the criteria needed. Purposive sampling was

the technique used in obtaining/selecting respondents. During data gathering procedure,

semi-structured questions were asked to the respondents. The researchers conducted

the interview and the said interviews were documented using audio- recorder and field

notes. The researchers transcribed the exact statements of the respondents. The

researchers used Colaizzi’s seven procedural steps as a method for data analysis.

Ethical issues

These are the following ethical issues that the researchers considered during the

conduct of the study, with the approval of the Arellano University Board of Ethics

Committee.

 Confidentiality

The researchers secured the identities of the respondents by abiding with the

principles of privacy and confidentiality. The informants were asked what codenames do

they prefer to use which was a combination of characters and numericals (two syllable

word with four numericals), it was used for the identification of audio recording, interview

and transcript on the respondents. No personal data of the participants were asked during

the interview proper.

Only the researchers and research adviser, as well as the respective participant can

have access to the original transcript. The accessibility of the original transcript is for the

purpose of reviewing the papers of the researchers.

17

College of Nursing

 Informed Consent

Prior to the data gathering procedure, the researchers provided verbal and written

explanation for the informed consent. The informed consent is written in English and

Filipino. The explanation of the informed consent lasted for 15 minutes. The researchers

emphasized the purpose and significance of the study. The inclusion criteria of the

participants, strict confidentiality and privacy of the data that will be gathered was

highlighted as well.

Scope and Delimitations

This study was done in a military camp in Quezon Province. This study focuses

mainly on the military personnel who have traumatic encounter, particularly Marawi Crisis,

and underwent psychiatric evaluation after the end of deployment from Marawi.

For the research participants, the researchers chose male or female military

personnel with age ranging 23-55 years old, and at least three years in the military

service. No specific branch of service was needed. They must have encountered wars or

any traumatic events, particularly have been deployed to Marawi. They must have also

gone through stress debriefing after the end of deployment to Marawi.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Foreign Literature

According to CNN (2017), "thousands of US service members with serious mental

health conditions such as PTSD etc. have been discharged for misconduct in recent

years. Such injuries and conditions can affect a person's behavior, which could lead to

their discharge." Former military personnel with mental health issues like PTSD get

discharged for misconduct instead of just having a sick leave for hospital admission to get

treatment. Misperception gets stern consequences such as exclusion in getting health

care.

According to Ondrej Skramlik (2017), “I believe that salutogenic approach is

suitable for the nurses to remain healthy in stressful environment in which the deployment

provides”. Salutogenesis is about supporting human health rather than the factors that

causes the disease. This approach was used and proven effective to reduce incidence of

PTSD cases among military personnel particularly military nurses.

According to Foster (2017), “People with PTSD need to speak with a mental health

provider.” Scientific research and proven methods for treating PTSD work by letting the

patient to confront and deal to the intrusive thoughts. The process can start by talking

with anyone, like a health care provider, chaplain or even just a friend.

20
Arellano University
College of Nursing

Local literature

According to Lelis (2017), “troops wounded in the ongoing final assault on the

constricted Marawi City stronghold of the Maute Group had been evacuated to the Camp

Evangelista Station Hospital (CESH) in the headquarters of the Philippine Army’s 4th

Infantry “Diamond” Division. The influx of battle casualties on 31 August 2017 prompted

the Center of Psychological Extension and Research Services (COPERS) to send a

Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) mission to CESH. The latest

COPERS deployment in support of the wounded-in-action (WIA) was able to serve 107

troops for stress debriefing, psychosocial support, risk assessment, and individual

counseling on grief, physical disability, and trauma issues.” Mental Health and

Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) interventions conducted by the COPERS can be helpful

in preventing the development of the combat-stress reactions such as depression and

Post- Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

According to Atuelan, ABS-CBN News (2017), “some security forces may have

been traumatized by combat experiences in the long-drawn battle against terrorists who

laid siege to the southern city of Marawi. The government has prepared contingency

measures for troops who may be suffering from combat stress.” The soldiers had been

fighting for Marawi since May 23, combat and operational stress reactions have the high

possibility to occur particularly in long-drawn battle. Development of Post-Traumatic

Stress Disorder and depression is susceptible.

21
Arellano University
College of Nursing

According to Dr. Fuentes (2015), “if we're going to talk about the military

organization with the knowledge to mental health, some of them still needs psycho-

education. Because when our patients are discharged, they go back to the unit, the stigma

remains and sometimes they are called "crazy". Mental health is still a very sensitive topic

within the military in the Philippines, as authorities are looking to do more to help those

suffering from mental health problem. In a military environment where weakness is

frowned upon, it can be an uphill task educating people on these invisible wounds of war.

And for those looking forward to getting back to work after treatment, there remain worries

about the stigma they might face.

According to Matina (2016), “combat fatigue and battle stress debriefing are

provided to our soldiers in view of their perilous mission to address any possible

problem of stress that may affect their performance”. Stress debriefing is important for

the Filipino soldiers who experienced war shock so that they can release the feeling of

tension that can be a factor in negative behavioral changes. AFP Health Service

Command provides immediate intervention to combat-fatigue and battle- stress through

debriefing.

According to Tan (2014), ” a person’s memory of traumatic incidents keeps coming

back, causing all kinds of problems ranging from insomnia to thoughts of suicide and felt

PTSD does exist in the Philippines and is most probably greatly underestimated because

many people don’t’ even recognize the problem.” Some of Filipino soldiers don’t admit

about having mental health issues such as PTSD. As a result, they don’t seek medical

22
Arellano University
College of Nursing

assistance because of shame in having PTSD. Without proper treatment some of them

can’t cope making them to be depressed and sometimes commit suicide.

According to Villamor (2017), “Soldiers who survived in strife-torn Marawi City

yesterday said they were traumatized, too, as a result of the armed conflict in the

predominantly Muslim city.” Soldiers who were rushed out from Marawi after suffering

from wounds confessed that the encounter at Marawi traumatized them. The sight of

exchange of firepower, bloodied soldiers and friends who got killed got them distressed.

According to Cañares-Yamsuan (2017), “Dr. Carandang, a clinical psychologist

(2017), cited three “elements” of trauma that reservists were advised to recognize,

including hyper-vigilance, intrusions and numbness. Hyper-vigilance refers to the

tendency of the mind and body to be “constantly on red alert”. Intrusions could include

nightmares and indiscriminate flashbacks of images that remind a person of the trauma.

Numbness happens when trauma sets in and a person does tasks on autopilot mode.”

Hyper-vigilance can be a source of an illness because the person is not calm, comfortable

and relaxed. If a person is suffering from numbness, that person can function, but is like

a robot with a hole in his/her heart.

According to Edge Davao News (2017), “early intervention could help ease

combat stress reactions, like dissociative and posttraumatic stress disorder or

depression. “We can disclose more fully what’s inside of us. It feels lighter. The support

has been overwhelming,” said First Lieutenant Allan Wadsilang, commander of the 6 th

Scout Ranger Company.” Providing the interventions needed such as stress debriefing

23
Arellano University
College of Nursing

is crucial for the soldiers that deployed from Marawi some of them manifested signs of

combat stress reactions.

According to UNTV News (2017), “a soldier allegedly committed verbal abuse

against several teachers and students of the Mindanao State University. AFP Public

Affairs Office (PAO) Chief Col. Edgard Arevalo explained it is not far from possible that

the soldier is experiencing combat stress because of the long battle he is engaged in

against terrorists in Marawi City.” Anger issues is one of the common symptoms of

combat stress reaction. Immediate interventions are needed for these to prevent

incidence of this kind of situations.

24
Arellano University
College of Nursing

Foreign Studies

According to the study entitled art therapy for PTSD and TBI, “a senior active duty

military service member’s therapeutic journey the finding revealed that this process of

healing for an active duty military service member with symptoms of chronic PTSD and

mild TBI identified how the patient overcome resistance to treatment and used art therapy

and acupuncture to externalized and manage recurring intrusive images and traumatic

memories. As a result of the all the assessments the primary diagnosis of PTSD was

considered to be the cause of some the psychotic and depressive symptoms for Fillmore.

These are the goals for Fillmore were to: 1, “get back to normal”, 2, improve memory and

concentration, 3, be able to more effectively manage his guilt/ reduce his morbid thoughts

and regain trust in self, and 4, not feel the pressure from an overactive “rear processor”.

The study highlights the application of nonverbal therapies like art therapy to help the

patients who are unable to express themselves through traditional talk therapies. It will

be such a big help for the active military soldiers to relax and ease their emotional stress

such as anger, and sadness. Physical activity like exercise was also helpful to divert their

minds.

In relation to the study entitled Exploring the Efficacy of an Anger management

Program for Veterans with PTSD, “there is no difference in terms of baseline health

outcome and demographic characteristics were evident between those followed up and

participants lost follow-up. Significant reductions on the primary outcome measures of

anger and aggressive behavior were observed post treatment, and maintenance of

these improvement in the longer term many participants in these studies are still

25
Arellano University
College of Nursing

experiencing a high burden of symptoms these finding are mirrored by studies exploring

treatment outcomes for PTSD between veterans and non-veterans populations, which

imply that veterans have poorer treatment outcomes.” The studies said that the severity

to handle mental health have still difficulties prior to treatment for the reason that, some

participants was not complying.

In accordance with the study entitled PTSD: The Effect of Age and Military Status

on the Military Population’s Awareness of Community Mental Health Resources, “Age

and/or military affiliation can have a significant relationship to the awareness level of local

community mental health care options available for the treatment of PTSD.” Different age

groups vary when it comes to awareness and to maximize participation in the PTSD

mental health care treatment programs, there must be an assurance that the different age

groups are aware of their existence.

In accordance to a recent study entitled Cognitive Ability and Risk of Post-

Traumatic Stress Disorder After Military Deployment: An Observational Cohort Study,

"cognitive ability seems to be a factor among other mental traits and early life conditions

including traumatic events. Military service members with a higher education level may

use better coping methods in relation to trauma exposure independently of their cognitive

ability, because they have access to more resources thereby reducing the risk of post-

traumatic stress disorder." This states that examining the cognitive ability of a military

personnel is significant to determine possible risk for PTSD. It is concerned with the

influence of pre-deployment cognitive ability on symptoms of possible and probable post-

deployment PTSD.

26
Arellano University
College of Nursing

Local studies

According to the study entitled Barriers and Facilitators of Treatment- seeking:

Case Studies of Filipino active duty soldiers diagnosed w/ combat –related PTSD, “the

study aimed to identify the barriers and facilitators of mental health treatment among three

Filipino male who is active duty soldiers and diagnosed with PTSD the participant

illustrate how they can be held back from seeking help, and how their treatment

emboldens them into acquiring and staying in mental health care. The one participant

belief about health care because having PTSD would sometimes be a struggle as a result

soldier don’t easily welcome medicines, and another participant was stigma and belief

that those admitted in the psychiatry ward are those that had gone crazy, one more so

that these PTSD symptoms may influence of probable barriers of seeking health

treatment and having a negative feedback regarding their beliefs and negative emotion

in terms of PTSD symptoms.” Even though there are barriers to mental health care, they

realized that they still want to regain their previous normal functioning such as; desire to

regain their former selves, this mainly includes; a compelling reason to recover for their

families and profession as a soldier. Despite their condition, their families still loved and

accepted them. A value that Filipinos emphasize: being family-centered. And as a soldier,

they want to show a sense of pride and honor.

According to a study entitled Understanding Combat-Related PTSD Symptom

Expression Through Index Trauma and Military Culture: Case Studies of Filipino Soldiers,

"PTSD, a potentially debilitating disorder may develop following a traumatic event. The

way participants experienced their most incapacitating PTSD symptoms may be

27
Arellano University
College of Nursing

understood into how direct exposure and close proximity possibly enabled the details of

the traumatic event to be retained in their consciousness. Military cultures may have been

so tenacious among the participants, that even though they are cognitively aware of their

trauma's circumstances, they still firmly believed that they might have violated their sworn

creeds." The participants’ index trauma such as the level of exposure and proximity

possibly enabled the details of the traumatic event to be retained in their consciousness.

The importance of military culture, including the soldier’s creed, is an essential element

into understanding how participants experience their PTSD. It can be concluded that the

participant's index trauma such as direct exposure and military culture specifically

soldier's creed potentially shaped their PTSD expression.

According to the study entitled Mental Health in the Philippines: By the Numbers,

“mental health is not among the priorities as evidenced by its exclusion from health

insurance packages. “ Mental health issues are not prioritized in the Philippines and the

result is the occurrence of stigma of having a mental illness seems common in the country.

According to a recent study entitled Psycho-social Behavior of Selected Psychotic

Cases in Ward 24 of the Armed Forces of the Philippines Medical Center (2017),

"unforgettable were Philippine soldiers who fought and died for the sake of freedom and

who until now may yet be suffering from the roars of cannons and guns. Our soldiers

came home from the war still clinging their ears. Until now they still suffer of war phobias

and mental abnormalities." This study focused on the psychosocial behavior of patients

after being, deployed and exposed to war.

28
Arellano University
College of Nursing

According to the study entitled PTSD Factors Structure and Relationship with Self-

Construal Among Internally Displaced Persons, “the present study examined the factor

structure of six competing posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). In recognitions of the

role of culture in PTSD, it investigated the associations of the factors of the best-fitting

model with self-construal.” This study resulted PTSD contain a factor of avoidance,

anxious arousal, negative affect, independent self-construal than with interdependent

self-construal.

According to the study entitled Philippine Military Seeks to De-stigmatize Mental

Health Problems, “Mental health is still a very sensitive topic within the military in the

Philippines. The authorities are looking to do more to help those suffering from mental

health problems such as depression, anxiety, psychotic, and trauma related disorder.”

The Filipino soldiers who have mental health concerns deal with a long period of treatment

even though they are already discharged. As they go back to their respective unit, still,

stigma remains in them because mental health issues still is a big deal in our country.

According to the study entitled Military Traumatic Events Vulnerability Scale,

“Majority of instruments that measure the presence of PTSD among soldiers are

bombarded with questions on reliability, specificity, and sensitivity due to inappropriate

use of samples and inapplicability of the generated items to Filipino war context.” The

creation of a valid and reliable picture of pre-diagnostic tool for PTSD that depicts

traumatic events of Filipino combatant soldiers is necessary so that proper and immediate

intervention can be done before and after deployment.

Synthesis:

During the review of related literature and studies, the researchers found out that

the stigma or the shame of having PTSD worsen the symptoms of the disease itself. It

also became a great barrier in help seeking behavior. Therefore the stigma of having

PTSD is more detrimental than having just combat stress reaction or even PTSD. In the

Philippines, mental health issue is somewhat a taboo. Just being admitted to a mental

health institution made a commoner to think that the people who were admitted there are

“crazy people”. As a matter of fact mental health issues are not prioritized in the

Philippines and the result is the occurrence of stigma of having a mental illness seems

common in the country. Lack of awareness about mental health and limited support from

the government leads to discrimination of the patients who are suffering from combat

stress reaction. Then again, stigma made its entry once more.

The sight of exchange of firepower, bloodied soldiers and friends who got killed

with direct exposure and close proximity possibly enabled the details of the traumatic

event to be retained in their consciousness.

Stress debriefing is of great help to address any possible problems associated

with combat stress that may affect their performance and perspective in life. It renews the

mind and releases the feeling of tension that can be a factor of behavioral changes to the

soldiers. Higher cognition will result to have better coping strategies. Art therapy helps

soldiers to relax and ease their emotional stress. Physical activity as well is used to divert

the soldier’s focus. Therefore, the military personnel with better coping strategies will

30

probably have good prognosis of the disease. Without proper coping strategies, some of

them cannot manage, resulting to depression and sometimes commit suicide.

The soldiers still suffer from war phobias and mental abnormalities including hyper-

vigilance, intrusions and numbness. As mental health in the Philippines is not being

prioritized, the researchers found out that there are only few studies conducted about

mental health issues.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

Research Design

The study is a qualitative research. Phenomenology is the type of qualitative study

used.

According to Polit and Beck (2010), phenomenology strives to seek the essence

of a phenomenon and what it means for the humans who experience it.

According to Polifroni and Welch (1999), the approach aimed to direct the

understanding of a phenomenon which was consciously experienced by the people

themselves.

There are two approaches in phenomenology; Descriptive by Husserl and

Interpretative-Hermeneutic by Heidegger. Husserlian phenomenology is the process of

bracketing that allows the researchers to put assumptions aside to avoid prejudice to the

result of the phenomena. It also describes the person’s behavior.

The researchers used descriptive phenomenology, in line with that, Colaizzi’s

approach has been applied. These seven step approach for data analysis has made the

researchers came up with the results and findings of the study. According to Colaizzi

32
Arellano University
College of Nursing

(1978), phenomenology is a research method designed to explore and understand people

every day lived experiences. In this approach, exhaustive descriptions of the quality of

life of the Filipino soldiers with combat related trauma after the battle of Marawi was made

visible. Emergent and clustered themes were also identified, making Colaizzi’s approach

effective in phenomenological studies.

Research Locale

The study was conducted in a military camp in Quezon Province. The data

gathering procedure was done inside the vicinity of the camp. In a well-ventilated visitor’s

longue, the interview proper was conducted. The researchers were grouped into three

and by pairs, every pair conversed with each participant in different corners of the room.

Instrumentation

The instruments that were used were audio recording and transcribing to gather

the needed data for the respondent’s profile. For the data gathering tools, the conduct of

the research involved formal qualitative interviewwith semi-constructed questions in

obtaining comprehensive information. The researchers were focused mainly on the

“Quality of Life” as the core in obtaining relevant data for the research topic.

33
Arellano University
College of Nursing

Sampling Techniques

The researchers used Purposive Sampling which focuses on the individuals who

possessed the criteria needed. The inclusion criteria are male or female military personnel

for at least three years in service, 23-55 years old. Had encountered wars or any traumatic

events particularly Marawi Crisis. Had gone through stress debriefing after the end of the

deployment from Marawi. The participants were selected as they have the first hand

experiences with regards to the study. Minimum of ten and a maximum of fifteen

participants were needed to represent the population of the inquiry.

Data Gathering

During the time that the researchers were finding and trying to enter a site, the

researchers went to different military camps before proceeding to the data gathering or

interview proper. Several number of referrals were done before the researchers finally

came up with the informants from the military camp in Quezon Province. Informed

consent was given each to the respondents, approved by the research adviser and the

dean of the College of Nursing. When the researchers were permitted to do the data

gathering, interviews were scheduled.

For the intentions of the research, in depth interviews were conducted. In depth

interviews are personal and semi-structured interviews, which aim was to identify the

quality of their lives including participant's emotions, feelings and opinions regarding the

research subject. The main advantage of personal interviews was that they include

personal and direct contact between interviewers and interviewees.

Discovering the Essence

The researchers realized the essence having a strong support system and

effective coping strategies of the Filipino soldiers with Combat Stress Reaction. The

participants showed common symptoms of Combat Stress Reaction. Even the clinical

manifestations are common and seems to be simple, it doesn’t mean that immediate

interventions weren’t needed.

The stories that had been shared to the researchers, helped them to discover the

quality of life of Filipino soldiers with Combat related Trauma after the battle of Marawi.

Transcripts

Bracketing was done before transcribing. The general sense of bracketing is to

avoid being bias about the findings. The interview proper was documented via audio

recording. The audio recording was transcribed. Transcripts were formed into written

documentation of the interview. The transcripts were studied for several times for

comprehension about the content.

Extracting Significant Statements

After re-reading the transcripts, significant statements were found. The

researchers extracted the significant statements from the transcripts and these were

written on the separate sheet paper. The researchers extracted 47 significant statements

in 10 transcripts.

37
Arellano University
College of Nursing

Formulating Meanings

The researchers formulated meanings in 47 significant statements. The

researchers analysed each significant statements and these are sorted into categories.

Each category was considered as an exhaustive description.

Cluster findings

As the formulated meanings were grouped into categories, these will be grouped

as well to form cluster themes. The researchers found 11 cluster themes. Each cluster

theme includes the significant statements extracted from the 10 transcripts. The

researchers also gave brief interpretation for each cluster themes.

Emerging Themes

Four emergent themes were found in 11 cluster themes about the quality of life of

Filipino soldiers after Marawi Crisis. From this Meta-theme:

Four emergent themes that arose were 1.) Changes in Relationships 2.) Effects of

Traumatic Experiences 3.) Coping Strategies 4.) Positive Changes after Marawi Crisis.

First emergent theme found was Changes in Relationships with three cluster

themes: Establishment of more Intimate Relationship with God, Closer Family Ties and

Stronger Bond with Troops. The second emergent theme identified was Effects of

Traumatic Experiences with three cluster themes: Anger Issues Developed, Hyper-

alertness, and Feeling emotional once heard about Marawi. The third emergent theme

that the researchers came up with, was Coping Strategies with three cluster themes:

38
Arellano University

Positive Outlook in Life, Diversional Activities, Stress Debriefing and Training. Lastly, the

fourth emergent theme was Positive Changes After the Marawi Crisis, with two cluster

themes: Sense of Patriotism and Better Work Performance after Marawi.

Changes in Relationship

According to Maslows Hierarchy of Needs, “the sense of love and belongingness

is a need.” Needs are essential to be met in order to be holistically healthy. Without a

sound mental health there was no health at all. The good support system from family and

friends and cultivated faith with God, study participants have obtained the third stage of

the hierarchy and one of the psychological needs.

Effects of Traumatic Experience

According to Carrie Kennedy PHD, “these responses often show up as hyper

startle (that exaggerated response when something surprises you — often a loud

noise), hypervigilance (being always on guard or super-alert), bad dreams/nightmares,

irritability, sleep problems, etc.” Kennedy stated the common symptoms of combat

stress reaction. ln this research, the participants have manifested those common

symptoms such as hyper alertness, feeling emotional and anger issues in particular.

These manifestations seem to affect the social well-being of the participants at the first

few weeks of acquiring the combat stress. Even the signs are common it didn’t mean

that they are too simple to be ignored.

41
Arellano University
College of Nursing

Coping strategies

According to the HelpGuide.Org, “There is no “right” or “wrong” way to respond.”

Coping mechanisms varies from person to person as each of us is unique. In this study,

the participants cope the symptoms of combat stress reaction by having a positive outlook

in life, having diversional activities to keep themselves busy and they went straight to

training proper or underwent stress debriefing.

Positive changes of Marawi Crisis

According to Carrie Kennedy PHD, “some of these reactions are actually

considered adaptive, notably hyperstartle and hypervigilance, as well as other benefits

of combat stress, including increased physical strength, better endurance and

enhanced feelings of competency (not all combat stress is bad).” In this study, the

symptoms that the participants had manifested had affected their lives particularly in

social aspect during the first few weeks. The symptoms at first seem to be negative

but as the time that the participants learned to adapt from it, good effect shall arose.

These effects are having a better work performance and have develop a cultivated

sense of patriotism.

Emergent Theme #1 – Changes in Relationships

Cluster Themes and Supporting Statements

Establishment of more intimate relationship with God

During their hardest times, all of the participants did the only thing that could help

them, and that is to ask for God’s protection. Their faith increased because calling God

for help was their only source of strength and hope during the war.

43
Arellano University
College of Nursing

According to Victoria MCGee of HuffPost, “So how do we begin to rebuild our faith

after trauma? Another way to restore your faith is to simply ask. Ask God to restore your

faith. We can do nothing apart from God. We can’t restore our own faith by ourselves.”

The participants have established more intimate relationship with God after the Marawi

Siege as the frequency of prayer and worship time have increased. Dependency with God

has made them to overcome the symptoms of combat stress as being in the presence of

God is their refuge.

Closer Family Ties

dati kasi nasa companya ako mobile kami, kaya d ako halos makakauwi at makakadalaw.

The participants were able to cope well because of the helpe of their families. Just

the thought that they make it alive has made their loved ones grateful. The table showed

how their families made a big impact in their fast recovery from the war.

According to SheKnows Health and Wellness Expert, “People with PTSD or

trauma can create and maintain successful intimate relationships by including

playfulness, spontaneity, relaxation, and mutual enjoyment in the relationship.” The

Marawi Siege was considered as one of the worst battle encounter that the participants

have been through and they were able to survive the bloodless wounds that the Marawi

Siege has left in their minds because of the presence of their family. Being with their

loved ones alone has brought relief to their stressed minds. With their family they can

be themselves, they can be playful and spontaneous. They have found their rest to the

people treasured the most. The feeling of being love has made them to manage the

symptoms of combat stress well.

Stronger Bond with Troops

May dumadamay sayo.

Madaming tuumtutulong sayo madaming kumukulit sayo.

camaraderie namin. Nakuha naming yung loob ng isat’ isa. Mas lalong tumatag at naging

masaya.

Terose 1921 : Presence of each other.

After the Battle of Marawi, the participants said that they developed a stronger

bond among their troops, they became more familiar with each other, and they considered

their comrades as if they were related by blood. One of the participants said that their

sense of camaraderie was cultivated as well.

According to Readers Digest, “some studies show that people with close friends

have a greater ability to fight disease than people who are solitary.” The sense of

brotherhood among the participants grew and developed after the Marawi Crisis. The

participants consider their troops as their great pals as they knew that being with the

person who have the same situation as theirs was the one who will certainly understand

what they are going through. The sense of belongingness with their comrades was a big

aid to help them manage the symptoms of combat stress.

The participants uttered that they became hot- tempered after their deployment

from Marawi. The anger issues that they seemed to develop were noticed by their

significant others.

According to Association of Behavioral and Cognitive therapies, “Survivors also

report irritability, anger, and feelings of being numb inside”. They are expected to be

irritable they have Combat stress reaction. Anger issues is one of the common symptoms

of combat stress reaction, with proper response and coping strategies, the participants

will surely overcome this. The participants’ strong support system is crucial during the

episodes of occurrence of this symptom.

Hyper-alertness

May fiesta kaya

maingat kami at full cover dapat talaga.

Many soldiers struggled to adjust to civilian life after returning from war. Majority

of the participants stated that they became more alert and sensitive with their

surroundings after the trauma that they experienced. The participants gave examples of

things that can startle or alarm them. Some of the participants also stated that they are

skeptical at first in socializing with civilians.

According to Association of Behavioral and Cognitive therapies, “the most

common problems survivors exhibit are intrusive memories, nightmares, sleep difficulties,

heightened anxiety and vigilance, excessive startle (for example, jumping at the sound of

a car backfiring.” Hyper alertness is one of the common symptoms of Combat Related

Trauma as well. Hyper alertness is about being highly alert to a potential trigger and being

constantly on guard. At the first few weeks, the participant’s communication with civilians

are slightly strained as they became suspicious to the people around them.

Ballpen 0526: Oo meron. May dalawa akong kasamang namatay doon.

Nakakahiya kasi.

Sad emotions were shown during the interview. The participants stated that

whenever they saw the news regarding Marawi or a picture of a deceased comrade, they

became emotional. The participants stated that the trauma they experienced was indeed

difficult to forget.

According to Jordan Cray, “sadness flow through our bodies when we experience

some form of loss in our lives.Allowing yourself to fully experience sadness will only make

you a stronger and mre resilent person.” The sudy paticipants felt emotional during the

episode of intrusive memories about Marawi Crisis. Ass they remember the loss that they

have at the battle field. Emotions do change instantly and they need to be felt. The

Positive Outlook In Life

The participants said that they were more determined when it comes to their duties

and responsibilities. The participants also said that even in difficult situations, they didn’t

think about giving up, instead, they think positive, became stronger and had faith in God.

The participants tried their best to forget the past and look forward for the future.

According to Royal College of Psychiatrist, “people react differently and take

different amounts of time to come to terms with what has happened. Even so, you may

54

be surprised by the strength of your feelings. You may feel hopeful that your life will return

to normal. People can start to feel more positive about things quite soon after a trauma.”

Obtaining positive outlook in life was one of the coping strategies that the participants

have found effective during the episodes of symptoms occurrence. The researchers

believe that the participants have already overcame the combat stress per se as they

learned to cope up well. Having a positive mindset despite of the worst that they had been

The participants have different diversional activities done in order for them to

distract their thoughts about the traumatic encounter in Marawi Crisis. They expressed

their feelings and emotions to their comrades and family. They distracted themselves by

keeping themselves busy. Some of them spent time with their families.

56

According to Help Guide Org, “Repetitious thinking or viewing horrific images

over and over can overwhelm your nervous system, making it harder to think clearly. Do

things that keep your mind occupied (read, watch a movie, cook, play with your kids), so

you’re not dedicating all your energy and attention to the traumatic event.” The

participants in the study, did several diversional activities to keep the intrusive memories

of Marawi Siege out of their mind. Some of them spent time with their families, others

went converse with their comrades and troops and etc. One of the participant admitted

that the trauma encounter itself was too painful to recall and few of them said that it was

difficult to forget either. Constantly thoughts about the trauma will never make the

participants better because the moment they think over about it other negative thoughts

and feelings will be cultivated such as anger, shame, guilt and etc. These negative

strong emotion will just triggered the PTSD out of combat stress.

Stress debriefing and training are the common strategies used to let the

participants cope from the trauma encounters that they experienced during battle of

Marawi.

The stress debriefing was led by the psychologist from AFP Health Service

command. It lasted for 4 days and it consists team building and psychiatric evaluation.

Some of the participants went straight to training after their deployment from

According to Help Guide Org, “There is comfort in the familiar. After a disaster,

getting back—as much as possible—to your normal routine, will help you minimize

traumatic stress, anxiety, and hopelessness.” After deployment from Marawi, the

participants underwent stress debriefing for days then went straight to 1 month vacation

leave. Being with their family was a relief for them, being with their parents, wives and

children. Surrounded by familiar people, places and routines have made them

comfortable and break free from tension. After the 1 month leave they went back to

training ground and assigned work places. Treating everything that they just bound to

and knowledge.

According to article from American Military Service, ““love my country right or

wrong”– a sentiment that is superficially understandable but disastrous in action. We

should applaud those who stand up against injustice or policy errors, especially those

who do so at cost to themselves.” Being able to do your part as a good citizen of our

nation was an overwhelming experience already how much more if you are one of the

reason why our nation has still have its amity? The participants were elated about doing

their part to restore our country’s peace and order. They considered their participation in

Marawi encounter as a rewarding experience the moment they set the Marawi City free

from the danger. Boosted self-esteem has help them to cope well, as knowing that your

In this table, it shows that after Marawi crisis, the soldiers improved their skills and

performance in their duty. The participants also said that they learned a lot from their

experience after all their sacrifices in Marawi crisis. As they have boosted self confidence,

they cant help but felt the spirit of patriotism after the Battle of Marawi. Cultivated self

confidence was the root of better work performance among the participants. The

moment that they conquered the Marawi Siege which was considered as one of their

worst warfare so far they felt that they can surmount everything beyond them. The self-

esteem was aid as well for their better coping.

CHAPTER V

SUMMARY AND RECOMMENDATIONS

Interpretation of Findings

Changes in Relationship

The participants have gone through several relationship changes after their

deployment from Marawi Crisis particularly with their families, troops and God.

They stated that they were able to establish a more intimate relationship with God,

since the presence of the Lord was their only source of hope during the war. Some of

them said that they were grateful that they went home safe and sound and only God was

the one who could have made it possible for them to get out alive from the Marawi siege.

All of the participants are Catholic of faith. Several of them said that their prayer life

became more fruitful and the frequency of it has increased. They were given at least one

month vacation leave during that time and all of hem spent time with their families. They

verbalized that their relationship with their loved ones became closer. The bond with their

troops became stronger than before as familiarity and sense of brotherhood within them

were cultivated. Positive relationships changes were developed after their deployment

from Marawi City. The effects caused by the Marawi siege were considered to be the

“good” outcomes to the participants’ social well-being.

Effects of Traumatic Experience

Anger issues, hyper-alertness and feeling emotional once they hear about Marawi

were the negative effects of deployment from Marawi Crisis that was observed with the

participants during the first few months after the end of their deployment to Marawi. These

changes were usually noticed first by the people around them. The sense of hyper

vigilance among them seems to be exaggerated and they became somewhat doubtful

when conversing with civilians. One of the participants said that the experience that they

have encountered in the battlefield was something that was really unforgettable and

several of them admitted that they felt emotional every time they remembered the

incident. These were the shade effects of Marawi Crisis among Filipino soldiers. The

soldiers were seemed to be used to traumatic experiences since it was part of their job

profile. These three changes fell under the clinical manifestations of combat-related

trauma. The participants underwent four-day psychiatric evaluation which was led by

psychologists from AFP Health Service Command after their deployment, and they were

also given a one month vacation leave.

64

College of Nursing

Coping Strategies

Several coping strategies were developed as the participants tried to distract

themselves whenever the traumatic experience starts to play in their minds. Positive

outlook in life, diversional activities, stress debriefing and training were their ways to keep

themselves busy and to divert their attention to productive things. These coping

mechanisms were their ways of making those memories to be out of their system because

recalling those traumatic experiences will just make them feel weak. These participants

proved that trauma can be managed by ones’ own state of mind and way of thinking.

Filipino soldiers are not just physically strong but psychologically resilient as well.

Positive Changes After Marawi Crisis

Another set of acceptable effects from Marawi Crisis among Filipino soldiers

particularly to the participants of the study were more cultivated sense of patriotism and

having better work performance. The spirit of nationalism was emphasized during the

combat event. Doing something for the good of your countrymen was indeed a rewarding

experience. Self-esteems were boost and led to better work performance. The

participants stated that they became more dedicated to their work after the battle of

Marawi.

Implications

There are factors that contribute to the quality of life of Filipino soldiers and their

response to such situations. From the findings of the study, the following implications

could be drawn.

 The participants displayed different aspects of qualities in life and that

involves relationships, spiritual and emotional factors, coping strategies,

effects of experiences and outlook in life.

 The relationships of the participants with God, family, and troops became

stronger and closer. Majority of the participants in this research study stated

that God is the source of their strength during the combat event.

 Regardless of the circumstances, the participants tried to get the negative

thoughts out of their mind and aimed to look forward for the better future.

 Changes in the personality of the participants after the trauma were

observed by the people around them. Having these changes somewhat

affected the way they socialize with other people.

 The participants were pleased that they were able to provide service to the

country against the terrorists. They said that the battle was tough but they

were glad that they became a part of it.

Recommendation

For Study Participants:

The researchers know that denial is part of coping but still knowledge is power.

Being familiar with your own condition is essential. Accept that you need help. But in

order to help you out, you need to ask for it.

Combat related trauma is a precursor of PTSD if its symptoms persists and

become severe, PTSD will surely occur. If these symptoms are suppressed and avoided,

you will never ever know how to conquer it or worst just even deal with it. Mental Health

Law has already been established in the Philippines, stigma of having any mental health

issue will surely subside since the Filipino are starting embrace mental health awareness.

There’s nothing to be afraid of. Healing begins with acceptance.

For Family of the Study Participants:

Be supportive and be patient with them. The illness itself is just a part of them but

it’s not their identity. Your presence is crucial. Being just with them will make them feel

better.

67
Arellano University
College of Nursing

For Healthcare Provider:

After deployment, the researchers recommended that stress debriefing should

become a part of the routine evaluation for the soldiers before they are going to deploy to

a particular unfamiliar provinces. Stress debriefing should become a part of the routine

evaluation for soldiers before they are to be deployed in the particular unfamiliar locale.

The researchers believed that the stress debfriefing was provided after the deployment

from Marawi City however, the researchers recommend the assessment of menal status

should be done prior to any deployment. Further, this intervention will surely help in

decreasing the incidence of combat stress among Filipno soldiers.

Combat related trauma is a response and it can be triggered even without

traumatic experience and most of the soldiers have multiple deployments, the

deployments itself is a significant factor for the development of combat- related PTSD.

Future Researchers:

Be aware of the difference between Combat Related Trauma and Post Traumatic

Stress Disorder. Make a study related to this research as this research focuses on quality

of life of Filipino soldiers after they had combat related trauma; you can make a research

out of their lived experiences during the combat.

Summary

In every war that the soldiers encounter, there are negative changes that occur

physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually. Most of the participants were traumatized

by their experience. They were not able to eat and sleep well and developed anger issues

and hyper-alertness. Every time they were having intrusive memories about the Marawi

battle, they can’t help but feel emotional. This was the time wherein their coping

mechanisms are very important. In order to help the participants, the AFP Health Service

Command psychologists conducted stress debriefing program for the soldiers who

returned from Marawi. According to the participants, it was a big help because they were

able to express their feelings and thoughts through group discussions. In addition, the

participants diverted their attention by focusing more on their families which then turned

out to be most the effective way for them to be able to cope well.

Despite of all the negative influences of the Marawi battle, the participants were

able to establish more intimate relationship with God, encompassed patriotism, built a

stronger bond with their troops, obtained closer family ties, improved their performances

at work ,and developed a positive outlook in life.

Simulacrum

This figure shows that thematic framework of study; “The Quality of life of Filipino

Soldiers with Combat- Related Trauma after the Battle of Marawi”. These figures

symbolize our concept about the study. The center figure represents success after the

battle of Marawi incident. It also signifies the camaraderie, friendship and teamwork that

were built. The soldier on the left side of the figure signifies the lifelong scar and the

negative effects of their traumatic experience such as anger issues, feeling emotional,

stress and intrusive memories. The figure on the top denotes that the Lord Almighty was

their only source of hope during the dark times and that it is God whom they always look

up into in every challenges that they encountered. It also shows that the soldiers are so

thankful that God let them survived the war. The figure on the right symbolizes

happiness, because they were able to come back alive and spend more time with their

loved ones.

TRANSCRIPTIONS

Participant 1

Date: August 3,2018

Time: 10:30-11:00am

Introduction- consent

R: Sir how is your life now?

P: I’m good, I’m physically and mentally healthy.

R: How can you say that you are mentally stable?

P: Because on the time that we are in Marawi, I was doing more as squad leader like

giving command and helping those wounded.

R: And how can you say that you are your heart is fine?

76
Arellano University
College of Nursing

P: Because before I can’t able to open-up my emtions, bu now since its already

happened several moths ago I feel like normal again.

R:Parang nagbalik po kayo sa normal?

P:hindi katulad. Ng nagdaang engkwentro…..

R: You mean that it’s like going back to normal again?

P: Not like that past encountered.

R: In your eating pattern is there any changes?

P: Our food there is limited, all we eat is pure instant food like sardines., we cannot

almost eat it properly. But now it's okay and our food is complete.

makakain namin.

R: How can you say that your food is complete?

P: Because we were able to eat at the right time, we could have eaten previously

It's just that we're in the middle of nowhere, just what we're supposed to do, we just can

eat it.

77
Arellano University
College of Nursing

R: What food do you eat often?

P: Mostly we eat those relief goods like sardines and noodles. Those instant foods that

we don’t need to cook for emergency. We don’t eat at the same time, mostly we eat

lunch 1pm and we eat dinner early.

R:BRIEFING

R: Sir your one of the leader right?how many group members do you have?

P: I have six members in our group, we are seven including me.

R:kamusta po yung pagtulog ninyo?

P:sa pagtulog, normal naman tulog ko. Nakakatulog akong 5-6 hours.

R: Sir how do you describe your sleep pattern?

P: I consider myself sleep normal, I get 5-6 hours of sleep. I don’t have any dreams

regarding battle, only sometimes when I couldn’t sleep and start thinking.

R:Eh Sir yung mga under sa iyo? Buhay naman po ba sila?

78
Arellano University
College of Nursing

P: May tama man yan, patay dinadala namin.

R: Your comrades in the battle, are they still alive?

P: Some of them got shot, 2 of them were dead and 27 of them are wounded. I hope

their will be okey. It’s hard but I try not to think about it, you can learn everything and

eventually you will get used to it.

maganda yung buhay mo, minsan mahirap.

nasasagot yung tawag nila, di ko sila natetext. Kasi ano mas uunahin ko yung bala o

yung kalaban namin?

R: After the war, is there any changes on how your family treat you?

P: There some changes, they want me to stop in military because they are worried, and

I know they love me. As right now it’s ok, that’s how a life of a soldier is, sometimes it’s

good and sometimes it’s not. When I was in Marawi, a wasn’t able to answer their call

and I was not able to text them. What I am going to prioritize the enemy that is shotting

me or my family. Of course, I’ll prioritize my safety. It’s hard to be a soldier but its good

to serve our country for peace.

79
Arellano University
College of Nursing

kasama mo, dapat lakasan mo loob mo, tapang. Nagtitiwala sayo mga tropa mo, tiwala

lang talaga sa Diyos.

R: After the war, is there any changes how you perceived your self?

P: When I was in war I wasn’t afraid afraid, I feel brave specially when I think about my

family and my comrades. You have to be strong and don’t show fear to your comrades

because if you are weak and you show it to your comrades they become weak too. Your

comrades will have trust in you and you have to trust in god too.

R: How can you perceived your trust in God?

P: When I was there,I am praying to save my families but nothing is change.

R:Nakakapagsimba pa po ba kayo after nung trauma?

R: Do you still go to church after what happen?

80
Arellano University
College of Nursing

P: Yes, I still go to church after what happen, I wasn’t afraid because all of the enemy

that surrendered to us we won’t kill them

R: For now what are you feeling?

P: For now I’m happy because our nation is free from terrorist except to those other

group. I mean I’m happy that we defended Mindanao in the war and I saw of our

fellowmen that they were able to come back to their barangay, to their own house that’s

why I’m happy because we win . And its also my happiness that I see my family

everyday when we back here with my comrades. Its like a normal soldier out of the

battle. Nothing to worries but thinking of continuing in the service until I retired because

that’s our life as a soldier. But we have to take care especially when we are outside.

R: Pano mo pong nasabing masaya kayo sa tropa nyo?

81
Arellano University
College of Nursing

R: how you can say that you are happy with your comrades?

P: of course we are always happy, sharing with them when we have problems because
we are like brothers. If you need something they are just their for you like your own
brother. They will be with you as a soldier. Coz everyday we are together. In a 100%,
90% of our life is in service and 10% is for our family.

Parang world war ng Philippines.

Naipagtanggol natin ang bansa.

R: Do you feel like its overwhelming when you help?

P: Its very difficult in the battle but its all woth it because we are a part of saving our

Nations.

R: In the day-to-day fight, did you lose confidence?

82
Arellano University
College of Nursing

P: I never experienced that feeling we were already tired and hungry. It just does not

seem like that. We only guarantee that our colleagues protect. We do not even know

how to think that I'm tired, I do not want to, we just positively.

R: When you are stressed or remembered what happened, what are you doing?

P: When I'm stressed, it's just a sound, it's okay to watch a tv after you've called the

family, to greet you, to talk to the troupe I'm not thinking too much. It's because of the

fact that those who live there are not so easy to forget that you still remember them.

R:Ano pong ginagawa ninyo pag naaalala mo yun?

R: what are you doing when you remembered it?

P: When I remember that, I opened my facebook, I see my troops. You also remember

those who were injured, asking if how are they now, and I will remembered those who

died that were happy to go there then we back that we lose some of them.

R:Sa pang araw araw nyo po? Ano pong ginagawa nyo sa freetime nyo?

83
Arellano University
College of Nursing

R: In your everyday life, what are you doing during free time?

P: At my freetime, cleaning the laundry, washing, cleaning the cottage, and then the rest

of the things you have studied, it seems like I need to review so that I can’t easily forget.

And sometimes in the afternoon we played basketball.

R: What will you say about your relationship with your wife and childrens?

P: of course we are always happy, sharing with them when we have problems because

we are like brothers. If you need something they are just their for you like your own

brother. They will be with you as a soldier. Coz everyday we are together. In a 100%,

90% of our life is in service and 10% is for our family.

pamilya.

84
Arellano University
College of Nursing

R: After that traumatic experienced, are you still active in terms of sexual?

P: after the war, we gave a 1 month vacation to be with our family to lose our stress, we

spent our time with our family.

R: How you will say that you are mentally stable?

P: Because I can able to manage my work like before when I am not yet a ranger, just

like before as a soldier. It is like I can focus again with other aspect in life. I feel normal

again.

R:Pano nyo po nasabing normal?

P:Hindi naman 100% o 90% na normal. May napansin akong ibang nagbago

R: How will you say normal?

P: Not really 100% or 90% normal, something is changed.

kagad, alerto kagad parati.

R: What are the changes have you noticed?

85
Arellano University
College of Nursing

P: I just noticed when we back from Marawi, when there was a bomb, I am always alert.

Even when I saw a civilian I still have a doubt but I easily overcome it.

R: How was ur sleep sir?

P: when I was just back here, when I am thinking of course I remember it but now its

already gone.

Escort escort, pag may opration. Pag may

pinapaclear saming bundok.

R: how is your work sir?

P: our duty here is 2-4 times a week just here inside our camp. But we are scorting

when there is operation specially when there is a mountain needed to clear.

R: are you not worried that everything will be flashback in your minds?

P: Not really worried, but still I’m aware of it.

86
Arellano University
College of Nursing

R:Sa ngayon ba di agad mabilis maging malungkot?

P:Hindi naman parati. Kasi nanjan yung tropa, di ako nagiisa. May dumadamay sayo.

Madaming tuumtutulong sayo madaming kumukulit sayo.

R: as of now, are you not easily feeling lonely?

P: Not really, I am not alone because my troops are there with me. They are always

there to help me.

R:Pano nyo po mailalarawan o maeexplain o madedescribe yung buhay nyo after

trauma?

P:Bali yung ngayon is masaya ako kasi yung sa pamilya, sa trabaho is nagagawa mo

Minsan tuwing

lingo may family day dito, nakakalabas kami, namamasyal sa sm. Dun sagera di ka

makapag isip talagang 24 hours dun walang pahinga.

R: How Can you describe or explain or your life after trauma?

P: As of now I'm happy because of my family, at work you can do that when you're in

the war you can not do, do it now. Once every weekday there is a family day here and

we go to SM. In the battle you can not really think of it 24 hours we don’t have rest.

Sometimes I took only 3 baths a month, but now every day, morning and afternoon.

87
Arellano University
College of Nursing

There you will not have to shower because you dont have no water. We have supply

mineral water for drinking only.

R: Your happiness in your work is just because of yout troops?

P: Its because of my family also, because I am working for them and of course I am

working with happiness for me to enjoy my job and to avoid reminiscing negative

thoughts in our work. Being sa soldier is my passion,it is in my father side inheritance.

Pag naisip mong kaya mo, magagawa mo ang

isang bagay.

R: After that traumatic event, what is your self belief?

P: I believe in myself, first to be a scout ranger. I want to prove that I can do it but in the

past, the parts of my life have survived. You survive yourself and your troop, I have

88
Arellano University
College of Nursing

proven that I can. That's one thing I believe we can do all that, you're happy, that you do

really. When you think of yourself, you can do something.

R:Sa pag-uugali? May nagbago ba?

asikasuhin mo muna tao mo. Nagkakaron sya ng pagdududa.

R: In your characteristics, is there any changes?

P: Totally nothing changed to me, it seems like that, but my wife says I become hot

tempered but it's not. Because she did not understand it, because there are many

soldiers, when you're young, you have less responsibility. And when you grow up, your

responsibility is growing. My wife used to say that before I text her oftenly but now I did

not text her anymore. I told her that I'm doing my duties, there are people that I'm

managing and She's in doubt.

R:Do you think that other people changed their treatment to you after trauma?

89
Arellano University
College of Nursing

P: nothing changes from my troops. But they said that they are proud of me. They are

so proud of me when we are in the mountains because they think that I am strong

person and they can’t beat me.

R:Self-confidence?

R: Self-confidence?

P: I become more confident being a soldier.

Kaya masasabi kong maganda

kasi kahit papano.Kasi nung nasa marawi ako panay ang gastos.

R: Can you say that you have a good quality of your life today?

P: Yes, because once you're in the battlefield, you can not think of your business, your

family, your parents and your wife because I cant monitor them, giving them some

financial help. So I can say good because somehow. When I'm in Marawi its all for

expenses.

R:So sa ngayon sir, totally healthy naman? Mentally, physically?

90
Arellano University
College of Nursing

nung training.

ngayon.

R: And now Sir, sre you totally healthy?Mentally and Physically?

P: Yes, when I first came back I’m thin, now I got too fat. Mentally yes, I think I'm

healthy too, I have a lot of thoughts, I've had the advantage of battle. In the battlefield,

training is just trained, in the war, that's exactly what it is. You can use the technique,

the technique that you learned about training. Whatever your training course is, you can

use it, and think about how you can use the technique and you can defeat the enemy.

I'm happy that I'm back alive. I do not feel anything bad in myself now.

R:Kamusta po kayo?

P:Ok naman

R: How are you?

P: I’m fine.

R:Ano po yung nararamdaman nyo po ngayon? After ng trauma?

P:Pagbalik namin dito maganda kasi nagtraining ulit kami. Pagdating naming maganda

kasi nagkaron kaming kaibigan.kasi pagpunta naming sa marawi wala kaming kaibigan.

R: How are you feeling right now? After the trauma?

P: When we came back here, we undergo training again. Its really feel good because

we found a new friends, because in marawi we don’t have friend there.

R:Nararamdaman na emosyon?

P:Masaya,

R: How’s your emotion?

P: Happy.

R: How can you say happy?

92
Arellano University
College of Nursing

P: Because we come here safe without wounds. Not like other soldier they cant able to

come back here alive.

R: Do you have other reasons to be happy?

P: Yes when we saw our family again, they gave us a break.

R: What did you do during your break?

P: Just in the house, family bonding, eating dinner outside, watching cinema and have

date with my girlfriend.

R:Kamusta naman pagtulog nyo ngayon sir?

P:Okay naman. Nakatulog naman ako ng mahimbing. Tama lang yung oras.

R: How is your sleep Sir?

P: Its good. I can sleep tightly. With a right time.

R:Yung panaginip nyo sir?

Mindanao. Pagdating namin dito masaya kasi iba na yung laban dito, yung

environment.

R: How is your dream Sir?

93
Arellano University
College of Nursing

P: When we are still there in the war of course I have a nightmare for what happened,

but everythings back to normal because we are here already. The battle in mindano is

different, when we came back here so happy because battle here is different, for

environment.

R:Naramdaman nyo pong safe na kayo?

P:Oo, ay hindi naman safe. Parang maganda kasi Iba kasi yung kalaban dito. Yung dito

NPA, doon maute-ISIS, magkaiba kasi yun. Yung kalaban dito 30-40 minutes talo na

hindi katulad doon buwanan.

R: Did you feel safe?

P: yes, but not really safe. Our enemy here is different. Here is NPA while there is

maute-ISIS, they are not the same. Enemy here is only 30-40 to defeat but there is for a

month.

R:Sa pagkain araw araw? May nagbago?

P:Wala naman masyadong nagbago. Parang normal lang.

R: In your eating everyday? Is there any changes?

P: Nothing too much changes. Just like normal.

P:Hindi namam. Pagdating namin dun nagenjoy nalang kasi sundalo naman, eh ayun

na yung sinumpaang tungkulin namin.

R: While in the battle or after, did you come to the situation that you starring blankly?

P: Not really like that, when we arrived there we just enjoyed as a soldier its our duty.

R:Anong libangan niyo kapag free time.

94
Arellano University
College of Nursing

R: What you usually do during free time?

P: Cellphone, facebook only, sports like basketball and jogging.

R: After the trauma, are you still able to go to crowded places

P: Yes, we have some fight but not totally face to face, because its snipper.

nalang yung putukan.

R: But you are still afraid?

P: On the first we arrived there we fell afraid because we are not familiar with the place,

we are afraid because at that time we arrived there thera are already bombing, but as

time goes by its become normal to us.

yung doon at dito. Kasi alam na naming tong area dito kaya parang gamay na naming

ditto

R: But here are you able to socialized with civilians? Are you not afraid?P: No, we

stayed here much longer than in Mindanao. When we deployed in marawi, month of

95
Arellano University
College of Nursing

May when we arrived there, its different from here. Because we are already familiar in

this place.

ako. Tumatanda na din kasi sila.

R: How’s your relationship with your family after trauma? Is there any changes?

P: Yes there is changes, I became more closer to my parents, because I’m still bachelor

and my parents become older.

Basta

mas naging close kami sa isa’t isa. Buti nga nakabalik pa ko dito eh.

R: How can you describe of you being closer?

P: Before when I come home its like nothing, drinking liquor, my friends are my priority.

Now of course I set my family as my priority because of marawi. We become close to

each other and its good that I was able to be back.

P:Oo

R: How about your activities before the trauma, are you still able to do it?

P: Yes

R:Gaya ng ano?

P:Naglalaro ng basketball, nakakapag-mall. Nakakapag gala.

R: Like what?

96
Arellano University
College of Nursing

P: Playing basketball, going mall and roaming around.

R: Are you still able to go church?

P: Yes for now, sometimes can’t go to church on Sunday coz we have an operation in

our area.

R:Kamusta naman po yung trabaho ninyo?

P:Ok naman

R: How is your work?

P: It’s good.

R:Pano po ninyo nasabing ok lang?

P: Samin kasi mula bata palang ako pangarap ko na maging sundalo kaya parang pag

naging sundalo ako, eenjoyin ko yung sarili ko. Kasi kanya kanya tayong perception at

hilig. Tulad ninyo, diba ayaw nyo magsundalo, gusto nyo maging nurse.

R: How can you say it is good?

P: Since I was a kid its my ambition to be a soldier, so that if i’m already a soldier I will

enjoy myself in here. We have our own perception in life and hobbies. Like you, you

don’t want to be soldier, you want to be a nurse.

R:Nung nandun po ba kayo parang wala po masyadong takot kasi gusto nyo po talaga

ginagawa nyo?

excited.

97
Arellano University
College of Nursing

R: when you are still there, its like you don’t have fear because you love what your

doing.

P: No, when they told us that we will deployed to marawi, we feel afraid but excited.

R:Yung sa mga katrabaho? Kamusta pakikitungo nila sayo?

P:Mas lalong dumikit kami kasi nag ano yung camaraderie namin. Nakuha naming

yung loob ng isat’ isa. Mas lalong tumatag at naging masaya

R: how about your comrades? How they treat you?

P: We become more closer to each other.

R:After ng gera, nakakatulog ba ng maayos?

P:Mahimbing na yung tulog ko.

R: After the battle, did you able to sleep well?

P: I can sleep tight.

R: Are you still dreaming?

P: Nothing at all, I’m sure if we are still in the area I’m still have a nightmare. Here I’m

already familiar, maybe I start here since 2011 I’m already here.

Kumbaga

parang basketball player, magaling ka magshoot diba, parang gamay mo yung

paglalaro.

98
Arellano University
College of Nursing

R: Are you feeling like you are safe now?

P: Not really safe, but we are soldier we already master our work. Just like a basketball

player, they already master to shoot the ball.

R:So after po nung naging trauma ninyo, pano nyo po madedescribe yung kalidad ng

buhay nyo ngayon?

samin dito lagi namin sinasabi

pala talagang kalaban.

R: After of the traumatic experience, how can you describe the quality of your life right

now?

P: It’s better now because of course I’m become more alert. Because here we are

always saying that we are more relaxed because we don’t have opponent to battle. But

since we came from there I became alert and i know that our enemy is just there.

R:So nagbago ka talaga ngayon?naging sensitive sa paligid?

R: You mean that you have changed? You become more sensitive?

P: Yes, for example there is something fall from apart, I was tremor.

R:Hanggang ngayon po ba yung pagiging magugulatin ninyo?

P:Oo kasi minsan iniisip ko agad baka kalaban nayan.

R: Until now are you still tremored?

P: Yes because sometimes I think its our enemy.

99
Arellano University
College of Nursing

R: Your eating pattern is it normal or you are still thinking about the war?

P: I’m not thinking about it anymore, because if I will always keep on remember it, its

too hard for me, I have to enjoy every passing day because if I will always thinking what

happen there it will stay in my mind always.

katrabaho.

R: How can you avoid remembering those things?

P: I will do anything like playing basketball, and talking with my comrades.

R:Parang yon po yong coping nyo po?

P:OO

R: Is it your coping mechanism?

P: Yes

R: How about your support system, what they do to make you forget like those

situation, your family what they are doing?

100
Arellano University
College of Nursing

P: We go outside and watching cinema together, visiting church and talking with my

friends with drinking some liquor.

R: Sir overall, what changes in yourself since you deployed to marawi until it was

finished and until now?

P: That’s is I become more alert and become more closer to my family.

R: As a friend Sir, like you said you have more friends, how can you handle your time

with them?

P: If I’m staying at home, they come to visit me,likewise I’m also visiting them to avoid

them thinking that I am unfriendly. Every time I go home they are so happy and proud of

me especially after marawi.

R:Yong tungkol naman po sa sex life nyo po may nagbago po ba after ng engkwentro

sa marawi?

P:Wala naman ganon pa rin

R: How about your sex life, is there changes after the battle in Marawi?

P: Nothing changes, its still the same.

101
Arellano University
College of Nursing

masyado mag isip.

R: How about your relationship with your girlfriend? How are you two by now is there

any changes in your relationship?

P: We are okay, we are still the same because we soldier are always busy and she

can’t able to go to our home oftenly thats why she is in doubt, she is an advance

thinking.

R: How about your trust in God after the battle, is there any changes?

P: Nothing, I become more faithful to him.

kayo ngyon?

P:OO physically and mentally healthy po ako ngayon

R: How can you perceived yourself right now sir, are you physicallyt and mentally

healthy?

P: Yes, I’m physically and mentally healthy now.

R:Paano nyo po nasabi na physically and mentally healthy kayo ngayon sir?

102
Arellano University
College of Nursing

R: How can you say that you are physically and mentally healthy now Sir?

P: Of course I can do my job and my duty and I don’t have illness because everyday we

have activities here.

R: How your activities help your stress? Is it helps you?

P: Yes for me to have something to do, that’s why Im making a way to be happy.

R: When you are in your room and alone are you easily get lonely?

P: Not really, I’m doing my way to make me happy.

R: In your daily activity and exercise Sir how is it? Is there any changes?

P: nothing, its still normal.

R: Did you mean that since the start of the battle and until now there is no changes in

you?

103
Arellano University
College of Nursing

P: Nothing, it is just that I am always alert.

R: As of now Sir, are you happy that you go back here? How can you say that you are

already contented and happy?

P: Yes of course I’m happy and contented now because I can able to go back here.

R: Except for that sir what else?

P: Of course I’m happy because I was given an experience like it. Because some

soldiers who is older than me can’t able to experience like what I have, that’s why I’m so

proud of myself.

R:Sa self steem nyo po sir at sa confidence po may nagbago po?

P:Tumaas po at nagging proud ako sa sarili ko kasi naging parte ako doon at history

kasi yon eh dito sa pilipinas at kahit papano may naiiambag ako doon eh para maging

Malaya ang isang lugar sa pilipinas

R: In your self steem and self confidence is there any changes?

P: I become more confidence and proud of myself that I become a part of the history of

our nation for peace and order and freedom from terrorist.

104
Arellano University

R:Sabi nyo po masaya kayo ngayon dahil nakabalik kana dto at Nakita mo na pamilya

mo?

R: You said a while ago that you are happy now coz you’re back? What did you do first

with your family?

P: Just spending my time with them and have some dinner outside.

R: Did you able to open up for what happened?

P: They are not asking about it, because when I am in marawi I am avoiding calling

them.

R: So you don’t have update from them?

P: Not really, it is just because I know that every time I will call them it is like I am

just making them worried about me.

R: How about your girlfriend sir, how can you handle your connection with him despite

of many months that you can’t able to see each other, is there any changes of how she

treat you after the trauma happened?

P: Nothing, just like normal,

About how she treated me, I really don’t know what she is thinking because we are not

being together . I am not also telling her what really happen to me so that she will not

be worried about me.

R: For all the changes that you have noticed from yourself after the war is it only that he

is being more alert?

R: How can you say that you have a quality of life niow?

P: Because I am still able to work, while others after they just done in the war they will

resign from service.

eh,

R: Is there some thoughts that will made your decision to resign

P: No because the is my ambition, I have so much hardwork and time consume for this.

R: In your family is there any changes?

P: Nothing

R:Nakakapagsimba naman po?

P:Oo minsan nakakapagsimba naman po pag may free time.

R: Did you able to go to church?

P:Okay naman normal naman

R: How are you Sir?

P: I’m okey and normal.

R:balik sa normal po?

P:Oo,parang normal naman di ako masyadong palaisip

R: You mean back to normal?

P: Yes, it’s like normal coz I’m not always thinking.

R: Did you not hit? Is something that has changed after that after that happened on the

first week that you started what changed to you?

R:Sa pagkain niyo po sir may nagbago po ba?

P:Pagkain Parang mas lalo ata ako malakas kumain ngayon eh, nagbabawi siguro

R: In your eating is there any changes?

P: Eating, I think I become more appetite now.

R:Bakit?

108
Arellano University

R: Why?

P: Because when we are in the batlle area in 2 months we just eat mostly sardines and

canned goods, that’s why when we come back I eat those foods that I am imagining

there.

ganyan.

R: Are you imagining foods to eat again?

P: Yes,wishing to go back to Luzonso that I can eat all of it.

yong utak eh from time to time may marinig ka talagang putok eh sabog ng bomba, yon

medyo maherap matulog kasi napakalakas tapatan ng kalaban parang pakiramdam

R: In your sleeping pattern Sir, how many hours did you sleep?

P: I can sleep, but when we are there its so hard to get sleep because we are always

alert all the time we can hear a bomb, that’s so hard to get us sleep because we know

that our enemy is still too much. Soon after that it was quite normal.

R: As of now, everything is normal?

P: As now, I’m not thinking it too much.

R: What are you doing so that you don’t remember it?

P: Playing games

R: What are you playing with?

P: Using my cellphone, calling my family.

P:Oo

R: To your Family Sir are you married?

P: Yes

R: How are you sir?

P: She is good, but she felt hard.

R:Bakit naman po?

P:Syempre sunod-sunod yong balita sa tv.

R: But why?

110
Arellano University

P: Of course, because of the news in the TV

R:Noong paglayo mo dito?

P:Kasi 5 months di ako nakauwi noon kahit noong nagkasakit sya, parang gusto ko ng

umuwi ba.parang inisip ko pa dn trabaho.

R: When you go there?

P: Because I cant go home in 5 months even when she get sick, I am thinking to go

home but I have also work.

P:Oo

R: Your work is your priority rather than your family Sir?

P: Yes

R: For now Sir what do you feel with your emotion?

P: I’m also happy.

R:Paano nyo po nasabing masaya?

P:Buhay eh,nakabalik parin kami dito sa Luzon ng maayos walang damage at no

wounded .

R: How can you say happy?

P: I’m still alive, were able to go back here in Luzon in good terms and not wounded.

111
Arellano University
College of Nursing

R: Do you have any other reason? What are some other reasons why can you say that

you are happy now?

P: Maybe because I have more time for my wife now.

halos makakauwi at makakadalaw.

R: Why are you not before?

P: It's hard to chase, now I have

R: What else, is there any reasons that make you happy?

P: My troops they are always happy and they trigger me to do the same. Iit is different

story when your friend are happy and you are alone sad.

R: For you what do you mean when you say happy? How can you describe the

happiness that you felt?

P: It is like I feel so good.

112
Arellano University
College of Nursing

CMO more on civilian ang makakasalimuha.

R: Really, why?

P: Because we don’t know what will happen next day or in the future, that’s why we

have to be alert, and establish security awareness especially to those outsiders.

R: So that’s what you feeling that you are afraid in socializing with civilians.

P: Yes, because we don’t know our enemy here, unlike there we can scape, while here

they are not familiar to them.

ginagawa niyo po pag free time?

R: How about your everyday life, your sleeping, your eating and what we are doing

during free time.

113
Arellano University

R: Are you still having bad dreams?

P: No more, I have dreams but not related with my experience.

maingat .

R: For your support system, who are those people who is supporting you all the way,

what did they do to make you feel their support for you.

P: In my family.they are always telling me to take care.

P:Oo,

R: Are you able to go crowded places like mall?

P: Yes

R:Yong wala pong halong kaba?

R: Without feeling tremored?

P: Just because I’m a little suspicious, I am always looking to my surrounding for

anyone who will come with me but that’s normal for me even before.

R:Kahit po dati pa?

114
Arellano University
College of Nursing

P:Oo parang mas naging aktibo ako ngayon kasi sayang ang buhay eh yong naisip ko

pag nagpabaya ka.

R: Even before?

P: Yes I am more active for now, because life is more important.

R:Natulala po ba kayo dati after ng gera?

P:Tulala?siguro natulala ako pag may isipin akong iba, doon siguro baka d ko na

namalayan na natulala ako roon.

R: Are you starring blankly after the battle?

P: starring blankly? Maybe I’m starring blankly because I am thinking other things, there

maybe I am unconsciously starring blanky.

R: How about your work Sir?

P: My work is good, it’s not hard if we just follow, just do your job full heartedly.

R: Are you doing well at work?

P: I’m doing well, complying for all the task.

R: Your previous task and now is there any changes?

P: Maybe, before I am so lazy and now I’m already workaholic.

115
Arellano University
College of Nursing

R: Whats the reason for your sudden change?

P: Maybe just because of work we need to be industrious because we can have an

endorsement if we don’t comply in our job.

R: What will you say in your life after trauma?

P: In my life? If there is changes?

R:Kung naging masaya po ba kayo or malungkot?

R: If you become happy or sad?

P: I did’nt feel any sadness yet, I just feel that way when we have misunderstanding

with my wife, all of my troops here are joyful that’s why I am also, of course sometimes

she has a complain about my work even thiough she is a police also, that’s why what

her co worker do, she is relating it to me.

R:Nakakapagsimba naman kayo sir?

116
Arellano University

P:Oo dalawa kami nagsimaba .

R: Did you able to go to church?

P: Yes we two go to church.

R: When you come back here after the battle, what did you do to with your family?

P: We eat together in a miliraty manner at the house of my in-laws, talking with them

and we date outside to see other view.

R: Is there any changes of how they treat you?

P: I didn’t feel that way, its like they are more proud of me.

R: It is like you become more closer to your family.

P: Yes,,maybe they are thinking

117
Arellano University

R: What is your belief in life after the traumatic experience? Is there anything changes

or you become more proud of yourself?

P: It’s like we more love what happen, it’s overwhelming that we receive support from

the people and the government, they really show us there full support.

R: So what changes happen or is there anything changes from the perception of the

people around you?

P: Yes, I think they become more proud of us unlike before that we a bad image to the

people. When they see us there they will come to us without hesitation.

R: How is your relationship with your wife?

118

P: We’re good.

R: How about your relationship with your child?

P: I don’t have a child yet, we are married just more than a year.

R:Sexualy active naman kayo sir?

P:Oo naman,

R: Are you sexually active?

P: Of course yes.

R: What are you doing when you are stressed? How do you cope with it?

P: We are just doing some fun.

R: Like what?

P: We we’re going out with my troops when we are here at work, but if we are with our

family we are just eating together, and I’m sharing while we are eating for what is

happening to me when I am in my work

R: It’s good that you we’re able to open up your feelings.

P: Yes, I didn’t keep a secret to her because I don’t want that she is thinking anything of

me, but she know my strategies like when I have to go out with my friend, I will told her

that I will text her later and I will tell her later where I have been.

R:Sa paniniwala niyo po ano po bang reliheyon niyo po sir?

P:Roman catholic

R: What is your religion Sir?

P: Roman Catholic

R: How is your faith in God?

P: I am praying oftenly.

R: Is there anything changed after trauma?

P: My faith become deeper, I am always talking with him during night when I am asking

for a blessing for tomorrow and I’m being thankful.

120
Arellano University

R: Did it comes to the point especially on the middle of the battle that you have regret

for whats happening.

R: As a friend sir, how they treat you , is there changes?

P: Nothing changed they become more proud of me and giving me appreciation, and

I’m so happy that all of our efforts are appreciated by the people and friends, it’s quite

overwhelming.

P:Maganda

R: Will you say that you have a good quality of life now?

P: Good

121

R: How will you say good?

P: My life now is good because I don’t have any problem when it comes to our salary its

already enough for our everyday living to survive with the help of our President Duterte.

R: Sir did you mention that are happy right now right, for how many percent?

P: 99%

R: Why there is 1% left?

P: Just in case that someone came to disturb of us that’s why 1% is for them.

R:Ano yong mga gulo yon sir?

P:Kung may mga kunting problema pagtatawanan ko lang yan , wag lang life and death

situation kasi mabigat bigat isipin yon.

R: In what way sir?

P: If there some problems, I will just keep on laughing, except for life and death situation

because its hard to think.

R: how will you differentiate your life before trauma and after? For example after

trauamatic experience are you still feeling afraid and now you are feeling safe. What did

you noticed that changed?

P: When there is bombing I’m still tremored, for example their is a fiesta there and has a

fireworks, I will keep on finding where the bomb came from, even when something falls

only I will keep on looking for it.

R: Is there some more sir?

P: That’s only what I’ve noticed, maybe I become just more aware, We don’t know while

we are on calm someone is ready to hit us. That’s how my body react.

R:Sa tingin nyo po ba mentally and physically healthy po kayo ngayon?

P:Oo

R: Did you perceived that you are physically healthy now?

P: Yes

R: How can you say that you are healthy?

123
Arellano University

P: I think I;’m still normal because you can still talk with me, that’s how I believe, nothing

changes from me.

R: Like when somebody is talking about it , are you become emotional?

P: Not really that, I more emotionally before when I don’t have an experience yet in

marawi, but now I am more confident.

R: Hows your self confidence?

P: My dedication being a become much deeper, when we deployed there immediately

crazy troops welcoming us.

R: How can you say your physically healthy now sir?

P: I am more active for all our activities.

P:Free time, d kasi kami lage maka jogging jogging kasi d kami makalabas lage dto

R: What are you doing during your free time?

P: We can’t go outside here for jogging because we are just new here, what we do is we

fixed water as our exercise because sometimes we don’t have water here.

R: How is your unity with your troops?

P: We are good, we have to be kind to each other.

mas iniisip ko yong pamilya trabaho looking forward for the future.

R: How will you describe yourself when you go back here, it everything back to normal

again?

P: Everything back to normal 100%. And I don’t think anything but looking forward for

the future.

R: Hi sir good morning.

P: 8 years

P: We stayed in Marawi for 2 months

R: How long have you been serving in the armed forces?

P: 8 years

126
Arellano University

R; What can you say about the experience you had in Marawi compared to the other

encounters you had before?

P: There is definitely more experience there (in Marawi) than I had before. You will be

forced to really fight even in the city. Our training revolved around mountains so the

technique we used was different.

R: When you came back from Marawi, what did you do first?

P: We did administrative work.

R: Did you have a psychological evaluation in Tanay?

P: No.

R: After your experience in Marawi, did you notice any changes (in yourself)? For

example, whenever you hear news about Marawi, do you have a certain reaction?

127
Arellano University
College of Nursing

P: I don’t think I am that affected.

P: Oo. Malala.

R: Can you say that what you have experienced in Marawi worse (than usual)?

P: Yes, it’s definitely worse.

P: Doon kasi wala kang oras magluto doon eh. Minsan sa mga tindahan kami

kumakain doon.

R: Was there something different with your meals there in Marawi?

P: Back there (Marawi), we don’t have time to cook. Sometimes, we eat at the

(abandoned) stores. There are times too, that we don’t have a choice but to eat spoiled

food.

R: Married po kayo sir?

P: Opo. Dito din sya sa Laguna. Wala pang anak.

R: Are you already married, sir?

P: Yes. She is staying in Laguna but we don’t have children.

R: Ilang taon na po kayo sir

128
Arellano University

P: 26 years old

R: How old are you sir?

P: 26 years old

nagkikita?

P: Oo naman. Madalas naman kasi malapit lang sya dito

R: How is your relationship with your wife? Do you meet often?

P: Yes, we meet often because she lives nearby.

R: Noong nasa marawi po ba kayo may contact kayo?

P: Wala.

R: Did you have contact with her when you were in Marawi?

P: It was only when I can ask one of my comrades if I can call through their phones.

R: After your deployment, did you come here immediately?

P: No. We went to Bulacan first before proceeding here.

129
Arellano University
College of Nursing

Kahit

mga tropa mo.

R: Did you have unusual experiences when you were in Marawi?

P: Sometimes it feels normal to see dead bodies, even fallen comrades.

R: During po noong time na nasa battle kayo sir. Sino po ba yung mga inspirasyon

ninyo para bumalik sa manila

P: Yung pamilya syempre. Saka yung mga tropa na nandyan sila. Kailangan kasi

naming patunayan na kaya namin yung training saka ayung kaya naming iyon.

R: When you were in battle, who were your inspirations to come back to Manila?

P: My family, of course. Even my comrades who were there with me. We had to prove

(to others) that we could survive.

R: How did (the war) affect your religion?

P: There wasn’t much effect.

R:Sir ano po ba naiisip mo kapag sinabing “trauma”

P: Parang “war shock” sabi nila.

R: What comes to your mind whenever you hear the word “trauma”?

130
Arellano University
College of Nursing

P: It’s like “war shock”

nararamdaman ninyo?

P: Wala naman. Parang normal naman iyon sa amin.

R: When you came back here after the deployment, what changed about you? When

you talk about what happened in Marawi, how do you feel about it?

P: Nothing, really. It’s like a normal situation for me.

Kaya yung

kasamahan naming tinamaan noon. Nakita naming sya na bumagsak noon.

R: Do you have something to share about your experience in Marawi?

P: It took us 5 days to get acquainted with the place. We were focusing on what was in

front then the militants would shoot from our right side. There was one comrade who got

shot and we saw him fall down.

R: Ano po naramdaman ninyo noon?

P: Una syempre yung takot. Pero kailangan mo gamitin yung training naming.

R: How did you feel then?

131
Arellano University
College of Nursing

P: I was afraid, at first. But we had to use the training that we had.

R: How long has it been since you came back from Marawi?

P: We have been here since November

P: Noong galling kasi kami doon parang iba kaysa dito.

R: What changed in your life since then?

P: When we first arrived here, it felt so different from Marawi.

P: Oo meron. May dalawa akong namatay doon.

R: Did you experience losing a comrade (in Marawi)?

P: Yes, we lost two comrades. I always remember then whenever I see pictures of

them.

P: Oo.

132
Arellano University

R: Can you say that you are happy with your life now?

P: Yes.

R: After your experience in Marawi, are you able to eat properly? How is your health?

P: It’s all normal, and I don’t feel anything has changed. I have more time to be with my

wife now because I can come home more frequently.

R: Good morning Ma’am.

P: Good morning too.

R: Have you ever had a psychological evaluation during the time when you were in

Camp Capinpin after your time in Marawi?

P: I did not have any because I went to schooling immediately.

R:Ilang araw po kayo sa marawi

P:June to September

R: How long did you stay in Marawi?

P: From June to September

134
Arellano University
College of Nursing

R: After your experience in Marawi, did something change in you?

P: In Marawi you can’t sleep because there’s always the risk of getting shot at.

R: Do you dream of the war that happened there or were you feeling fine right after the

war?

P: You recall what happened in the war, of course. But when you hear news about the

place, especially about your comrades who are still there, you just have to be open

minded.

R:May anak po ba kayo?

P:Meron

R: Do you have a child?

P: Yes.

R:Nasaan po yung baby ninyo?

P: Nandyan

135
Arellano University
College of Nursing

P:Hindi. Normal naman

R: Where is your baby staying at?

P: Around here.

R: Do you get startled when you hear loud noises?

P: Not really.

Doon

kasi araw araw maririnig mo. Tapos gabi gabi nayanig yung higaan mo. Tapos

kinakabahan pa nga kami kasi naririnig mo palapit sila ng palapit.

R: Did your outlook in life change after your deployment? Is it safe to assume that it was

your worst encounter?

P: Yes. Because you can really feel the war there. You can hear the encounters

everyday. Then at night, you can feel your bed shaking. Then you feel more and more

nervous because you can hear the shootings come nearer.

R:Yung pagkanin nyo po ba nabago simula noon?

P:Sa marawi kasi limited yung pagkain saka iba yung lasa. Dito mas maayos kasi lahat

nung mga gusto mo kainin pwede.

136
Arellano University
College of Nursing

R: Did your eating habits change since then?

P: In Marawi, you food is limited and the taste is different. Unlike here, you can say that

the food is properly prepared and you can eat anything.

R:Noon umpisa sa Marawi paano kayo naka adapt doon?

P:Wala na kasi kami makain doon. Kaya matitiis na lang namin. Noong unang gabi

Tapos after isang lingo wala na kaming

makain.

Sinigang

mix na hinaluan ng patola saka gabi. Basta madami. Yung hindi moa lam na pwede

palang makain yun.

R: At first, how were you able to adapt in Marawi?

P: We didn’t have anything to eat there so we had to suppress (our hunger). On the first

night, we had to eat raw food because the food that we had with us has gotten spoiled.

It’s a good thing that we had canned goods with us. Then, after a week, we ran out of

food to eat. We had whatever our superior could find. Have you ever had pancit that

had squash in it? Sinigang mix with patola, and so much more. We ate things that we

didn’t know can be eaten until then.

R:Kamusta naman ang pagtulog ninyo doon?

137
Arellano University
College of Nursing

umalis doon kasi delikado.

Doon kasi

diredirecho.

R: How was your sleeping pattern there?

P: We couldn’t sleep. We came to a point where one of your mates wakes you up so

you can change locations because it has become dangerous. The gunfires there are

continuous.

R:Gaano katagal yung putukan doon? Oras?

P:Hindi. Araw yun. Pahinga lang kami konti tapos putukan ulit. Noong unang gabi pa

nga naming natulog kami ng nakadapa kasi may narinig kaming putok. Akala naming

pinasok na yung tinutuluyan namin. Malapit kasi yung area naming doon. Tulay lang

ang pagitan.

R: How long do the gunfires last?

P: It lasts days. We can only rest for a short while then we have to join the battle again.

On our first night, we had to sleep on our stomachs because we can hear the shots

being fired. We thought that our hiding place has been compromised because we are

near the battlefield.

138
Arellano University
College of Nursing

P:Madami. Doon kasi complicated. Doon kasi parang masikip.

R: What changed in your life compared to your time in Marawi and here?

P: A lot. Back in Marawi, everything is complicated, like it’s too cramped. Here, there’s

more space. Back then, whenever I hear gunshots, I think of my baby.

R:Ilang months na yung baby ninyo nung umalis kayo?

P:11 months.

R: How old was your baby when you were deployed?

P: 11 months.

R:Binebreastfeed nyo yun?

Tapos

pinabalik ako sa marawi after ilang araw.

R: Did you breastfeed your baby?

P: I had to stop it. I was lucky that I was allowed to come home on my baby’s first

birthday. I was then called back to Marawi after a few days.

P:Oo

R: Is your baby your inspiration?

139
Arellano University
College of Nursing

P: Yes

R: Paano po ba ninyo dinedefine yung “trauma”?Matatawag mo ba yun na war shock?

P:Oo.

yung loob mo. Kahit ikaw mismo nanghihina na din.

R: How do you define “trauma”? Can you call it war shock?

P: Yes, but I didn’t reallu experience what they call “war shock”. The comfort that we

received from eacah other helped us a lot. There were three of us (female soldiers)

then, and whenever one of us starts losing hope, you tell yourself to be strong even if

you feel like giving up yourself.

R:Ilang taon na po kayong sundalo?

P:5 years.

pinaparating.

R: How long have you been in the Armed Forces?

140
Arellano University
College of Nursing

P: 5 years. The area that we were assigned to was so dangerous that you can’t even

walk carelessly. But I didn’t let my comrades see that I was also scared because there

should be at least one of you who is strong for the group. Just like my husband who was

destined inside the warzone, they have recovered some bodies of fellow soldiers. I

always ask him how he is. Sometimes he tells me that he and his comrades already

have low morale. Sometimes he doesn’t tell me anything in person, sometimes he tells

me through text.

R: Have you experienced losing a comrade?

P: Yes. We had one comrade that we saw where he was hit. Though we already

expected that to happen. I’m not saying that it’s a normal occurrence, but we all know

that it is part of our job.

R:Paano po ba kayo nakapag cope?

P:Malaking tulong kasi yung may kasama ka. Dapat mayroon ka parating kausap.

Ayung nagtatawanan pa din. Yung kapag masama na loob mo kailangan mo ilabas.

R: How do you cope (with the loss)?

141
Arellano University
College of Nursing

P: Your comrades are a big help. You have to have someone to talk to and make jokes

with. Someone who can listen to your feelings.

R: How do you express your feelings?

P: We joke with each other sometimes to lighten the mood.

Madami kasing tao doon.

R: How was your religion affected by your stay in Marawi?

P: I didn’t meet anyone who was anti-Christian there. When we rescued people, we

were the first ones who welcomed them into the safe zone. They always thank us, and

when we go to Iligan City, there are people who give us food. There are those whom

you don’t even know who gives you food.

142
Arellano University
College of Nursing

P:Syempre. Lalo na kami, mga babae kami. Parang mas pinagkakatiwalaan kami ng

mga tao. Parang ikaw na yung comfort nila. Minsan kapag kailangan ng maoospital,

kami nagdadala.

R: Whenever you rescue people, does it affect you?

P: Of course. Especially for us since we are women. People trust us more and

sometimes go to you for comfort. Sometimes, even, when there’s someone who needs

to be hospitalized, we are the ones who assists them.

R: May mga ospital ban a nasira?

R: Are the hospitals there damaged?

P: Some of the equipment, yes. But the operation is still ongoing.

R: It’s a good thing that the doctors and nurses did not go.

P: They stay. But sometimes because of the militants, we let the Christian (hospital

staff) escape.

143
Arellano University
College of Nursing

R: Was there a need to fake being a Muslim?

P: You can’t fake being a Muslim thre because they ask you to speak in Maranaw. If

you can’t speak that, they kill you. We have people there who has been there for 2

months already and only gathered their courage to escape when we came.

kayo nadidistract noon?

P:Syempre nadidistract ako kasi andoon yung asawa ko.

R: You mentioned that you studied right after your deployment in Marawi. Don’t you get

distracted?

P: Of course I get distracted because my husband is still there.

R: Do you still remember your experiences there?

144
Arellano University
College of Nursing

P: Of course I do. Especially when I hear news about the place. When I first came back

here and I see the news on TV, I get teary-eyed, and told myself that I am never going

back to Marawi. I can remember my comrades who were left there because I was one

of the first ones to be sent home.

R: Naapektuhan ba yung tulog mo noon?

P:Syempre nahihirapan minsan dahil andoon nga yung asawa ko. Pero hindi naman

kami nawawalan ng communication. Para malaman na safe sya.

R: Was your sleep pattern different since then?

P: Of course because I still think about my husband who is still there. But we make sure

that we don’t lose communication so I know that he’s safe.

R: When you were studying, did your other comrades look at you differently?

P: I didn’t tell them that I was deployed in Marawi because they call us “Marawi Warrior”

P:Wala naming iba. Parepareho kasi kaming sundalo kaya walang mas mataas o

mababa.

R: What does “Marawi Warrior” mean?

145
Arellano University
College of Nursing

P: Nothing much. Because we are all soldiers who are equal.

R: Did you feel your troopmates’ support?

P: Of course. Especially with us female sodliers. They support us because they know

that even if we are strong, men are still stronger. Whenever we are on the run, they

make sure that we are safe. Before we were deployed to Marawi, my commander asked

me if I wanted to come because I have a baby. I went with them because my husband

was there and I thought of my comrades who needs me. There were only two female

soldiers then that’s why I wanted to come along.

146
Arellano University
College of Nursing

R: What did you learn in Marawi?

P: At work, unlike here in Luzon that we can relax, you can’t do that in Marawi. On our

first day there, even if we knew that it was abandoned, we had to assume that there are

still people there whom we can still rescue. Then about my family, I make sure that I

make the most of every minute I spend with my baby. When I went home for her first

birthday, she didn’t even recognize me.My older sister told me not to come home when

my baby was awake because she won’t come with me. So I had to come at night and

sleep beside her so when she wakes up, I’m the first one she sees. What my twin sister

does is that she’d stay at a different house so my baby and I can bond together

because my baby knows her more than she knows me.

R:Sa health po ba ninyo, paano naapektuhan?

P:Sa mental health, okay naman ako. Kasi open akong tao.

R: How about your health, how did it change?

P: Mentally, I think I’m okay because I’m open minded.

R:Sa physical po ba?

147
Arellano University
College of Nursing

training.

R: How about your physical health?

P: Physically, it’s the same. That kind of training is already normal for us.

tungkol doon.

R: How about you emotional aspect?

P: When I hear news about Marawi, I can remember everything that I saw and

experienced there. I still get teary-eyed whenever I hear the news about that place.

Nakakhiya kasi.

R: How do you overcome these feelings?

P: I try to distract myself so I don’t think about it too much. But whenever I hear the

news, I can’t take it out of my head anymore. But I didn’t want to show that I get teary-

eyed because I feel ashamed.

148
Arellano University
College of Nursing

R: How about inter-personal relationships?

P: Nothing really changed because the ones I was with in Marawi are the ones I’m still

with here. Regarding my parents, on the other hand, they are still worried. My mother

always sends me text messages asking me how I am, there are even times when I don’t

know if she’s asking about me or my daughter.

R: Do you think your performance improved?

P: Yes. Because back in Marawi, we always had to work and we couldn’t relax. When

we hear news of people in need of rescue, we get excited because we can save people.

149
Arellano University

Because back there when you see people who are alive, it makes you happy. I’m also a

mother so I worry about the babies that I see whose mothers died, and I worry that they

will die of hunger.

P:6 months

R: How long has it been since you came back from Marawi?

P: 6 months

R:Ano napansin mong nagbago sa sa sarili mo?

P;Same lang naman Walang nagbago

R: What changes have you noticed about yourself?

P: Nothing really changed.

R:Kapag naririnig mo yung salitang trauma ano naiisip mo?

P:Sa tingin ko, shock. Pero hindi sa akin nangyari iyon. Bago kasi kami pinadala sa

Marawi handa kami Kasama kasi sa training naming yun.

R: When you hear the word “trauma”, what comes to mind?

P: In my opinion, it’s shock. But I don’t think that happened to me because before we

were sent to Marawi, we are well equipped because it was part of our training.

kami.

152
Arellano University
College of Nursing

R: Can you consider your experience in Marawi the wost one you had?

P: Yes, compated to others I have experienced. In Marawi, what you experience is real.

But we know we can survive because we are together. And we know that whatever

happens to us there, we are secure.

R: Did you come to a point where you felt like losing hope?

P: There are times that I felt sad because I am away from my family. Sometimes there

isn’t even cellular service and we always have to focus because you can be hit by

bullets anytime. But we are used to it already because it is part of our job.

Marawi

R: What kind of training did you receive?

P: We are used to the hardships even back during training so it didn’t shock us when it

really happened in Marawi.

153
Arellano University
College of Nursing

P:Nakakatawag naman minsan, kamustahan, ganoon. Naiintindihan naman niya kasi

parehas kaming sundalo.

R: Did you ever lose contact with your loved ones?

P: Sometimes we’re able to call. My husband understands that we can’t always talk

because she is also a soldier.

R: What was your worst experience in Marawi?

P: I am a Nursing graduate from College of Perpetual Help, so I am assigned in the

ambulance, and we have to rescue civilians who were stuck in the warzone.

yung morale mo.

R: What were you feeling at the time?

P: I still get nervous, of course. Sometimes you just have to pray and have faith. But

whenever we see our fellow comrades, our morale increases.

154
Arellano University
College of Nursing

makakauwi. Kaya ngayon nagpapasalamat ako na nakauwi ako.

R: How is your relationship with God?

P: I became closer to the Lord because during the time I was there, I thought I won’t be

able to come home anymore. That’s why I am so thankful to him now.

R: How can you describe Marawi then?

P: What we arrived at were the broken houses and things. Roofs and walls were full of

bullet holes and remnants of explosives.

P:Oo, may time na nailigtas naming iyung 5 months old na bata kasama yung nanay

nya.

Nakaka high morale iyon

syempre kasi may nailigtas ka na bata

R: Is it a relief when you are able to save people?

P: Yes. There was a time when we were able to save a 5-month-old baby with his

mother. When I held the baby, he was smiling at me because you know he’s innocent.

155
Arellano University
College of Nursing

When we were able to rescue him, he was so hungry. Being able to save that baby

gives us high morale.

R: Of course you cannot save everyone. How do you feel when you see people that you

weren’t able to save?

P: During my time in Matawi, everyone we save is immediately brought to the hospital.

R:Ano yung ginagawa mo kapag pakiramdam mo hindi mo nagawa iyung dapat mong

gawin

Ano man yung mangyari,

gawin mo pa din yung trabaho mo.

R: What do you do when you feel like you didn’t do your job?

P: I still do my best because it’s my job. Whatever happens, I still have to do my job.

R: What do you usually do when you already have low morale?

156
Arellano University
College of Nursing

P: I talk to my fellow female soldiers

R: How do female soldiers express their feelings?

P: We just talk to each other and tell stories.

R: Does talking to others relieve stress?

P: Yes.

R: How about you meals there?

P: We have support in the area where I was assigned. There are those from the Army

that gives us rations of food. There are also other comrades who gives us female

soldiers food and clothes.

157
Arellano University

sundalo

P:Oo, syempre kapwa mo Pilipino yun nakaka high morale pa.

R: Does it affect your morale when your fellow Filipinos thank you?

P: Of course because it’s your fellow country men and it helps us have high morale

R: If you have high morale, does it improve your service?

P: Of course.

R: How did your family react when you were sent to Marawi?

P: My mother called me then because she was shocked that I was sent to Marawi. They

were so worried but soon got used to it because they call me almost everyday. I am

from a family of soldiers so they are used to it.

158
Arellano University
College of Nursing

R: What did you learn in Marawi?

P: I learned how to get along with others, even with our Muslim fellowmen. I was also

able to use my skills there. As long as I am with my troop and my weapon, we can

survive.

teenager.

R: In your opinion, who are the ones vulnerable to PTSD?

P: I think the ones who are mostly affected are the civilians especially the children and

teenagers.

R:Sa tingin ninyo sa military sino and vulnerable sa PTSD

P:Pantay pantay na kasi kami. Sanay na kaming lahat doon.

R: How about in the military, who are vulnerable to PTSD?

P: We think we are all equals and we are all used to situations like that.

R:Sa mga baguhan po ba

159

P:Hindi naman. Kasama na kasi sa training noon.

R: How about with the new soldiers?

R: Kinagagalak kong makatulong sainyo.

R: Good afternoon sir. First of all, we would like to thank you for accommodating us as

we are about to conduct an interview.

P: It is my pleasure to be able to help each one of you.

R: I will start now sir. We will focus on your quality of life before and after the war in

Marawi.

P: Okay ma’am you can start asking now.

161

R: Before the war in Marawi, are you prepared to be deployed?

P: To be honest we’re not prepared. They told us we will just train but then after one

week we were suddenly told that we were to be deployed to Marawi.

R: How did you inform your family about it?

P: I never told my wife earlier during that time because I know we will just have some

arguments, she might tell me to go home for the reason that she’s so worried but this is

my job.

pwesto namin.

R: In Marawi, how do you eat and sleep well? Is it fine?

P: I wasn’t able to eat well because my mind was so clouded with the thoughts of the

war. I wasn’t also able to sleep well because anytime they might attack our spot as they

shower us with bullets.

162

P: Time.

R: What are the problems that you faced during the war sir?

P: Time. The demands of the soldiers in the higher position were different. Once they

instruct, they want it to be done fast but my comrades are not prepared during that day.

R: Nasolusyunan naman po ba sir?

P: Oo. Ginawan ko nalang ng paraan agad.

R: Was it resolved sir?

P: Yes. I just made a resolution right away.

R: How was your faith to God during the war sir?

P: I prayed more often. We have no one to hold on to, but to God only.

sainyo?

163
Arellano University

P: Pag uwi medyo tulala pa ako tsaka lagi kong naaalala yung mga pangyayari nung

giyera.

R: When the war was finished and you were able to go back sir, what are its effects to

you?

P: When I went back I was just staring blankly and I often remember the happenings

during the war.

R: Is the stress debriefing that was conducted to your camp helpful?

P: It was a big help because at least we were able to express our deep emotions and it

feels better.

R: How’s your condition now sir?

P: I can say that I am fine now.

R: Of all the circumstances that you have faced during the battle sir, what are your

learnings?

P: I learned to give importance to my co-workers. Because during the war, it will be just

us who’ll help one another.

can’t sleep because they might shower us with bullets.

Respondent #9 JP1519

Date: August 3,2018

Time: 11:30-12:00am

R: Sir, Ilang taon napo kayo sa serbisyo?

P: 8 years

R: Sir, How long you are in your service?

P: 8 years

P: Mortal Squad

R: What is the line of your duty and where did you assigned?

P: At Mortal Squad

nangyari.

R: Sir, I thought that you have a seminar or activity about stress debriefing? What
happened to the result?

P: On the stress debriefing or stress management there was a big impact or big help on
our experience that happened on war, through these you can released all stress or pain
that you felt, and this is the way to recover and eased all the pain that happened..

N: Sir what are those experiences that happened on you and what affects you more?

170
Arellano University
College of Nursing

P: On my first day I felt so hard because it was a war, and also it’s not easy to adjust on
my sleep, and I’m afraid if I will come back alive to my family.

R: Sir may sarili napo ba kayong pamilya?

R: Sir are you married? How many kids do you have?

P: Yes I have only one kid, sometimes I’m thinking at night if I migth be back to my
family, maybe almost one week it happen, but I called them every day to communicate
and to eased all the worries of my family on me because my kids is just a little, and this
is my way to avoid or to ease my worries.

alerto at maingat kami at full cover dapat talaga.

R: But Sir, what happened or what did you experience in the area that have a battled?

P: Our 1st area was so far maybe 500 meters away , many stray bullets it was so fearful
that’s why we change our location or area it was a big building for our safety, then there
was a time that our enemy was near on us that’s way during we are competing or
having a fire formation we use a hand cover because many airplane are passes and
bomb falls down and we have one comrade hit in the arm so it was a lesson on us to be
more alert and make a full cover up.

sa time management ninyo? Ano po yung mga naging struggles ninyo during gera?

171
Arellano University
College of Nursing

silang slave

R: Sir, when you are on the battled area what struggles you a lot? On your patience or
time management? What are those struggles during a battled?

P: All of us want to finish the battled because many people are affected, many stories
that many civilian victim was trap and we felt pitiful on them that’s way we try to shorter
the battled and try to easily finish the war because there is a tendency that the hostages
and who are children, pregnant, elderly people.

R: Sir how’s your relationship with your family? Did you inform your family or suddenly
go arrived.

P: Actually it is unexpected, after that we have misunderstanding between me and my

wife, of course she will not easily understand it, and she was shock that im already on
the area, on my 1st week we have a conflict because she doesn’t want me to stay there
and he told me that she will send me a money to go back home but I said that it not
easy. Then she told me that okay stay there. Then we don’t have any communication
after that.

may mababalikan pa ba akong pamilya.

172
Arellano University
College of Nursing

R: So it means Sir that while you are in the battle something is troubled you also about
your wife?

P: Yes it’s so hard for me while I am in the battle I am also thinking if I still have a family
when I’m back. From the beginning my wife don’t want me to be an army but its my
family inheritance to be an army that’s why there is a big chances for me to become an
army also, and I ask her to be more understanding but there are sometimes that we’ve
got troubled. But now I have to think of my safety first rather than thinking of our
problems, that’s why I am asking her to pray for me.

R: Sir how is your relationship with your comrades?

P: We are good and we keep on motiuvating that we will help each one another
because if we will keep on fighting its nothing to do with us. There’s nothing conflict
between all of us.

R: Is there any changes in your health since you’ve been in the battle?

P: I become thin, I was able to eat but we don’t appetite because of sleepless nights
and we heard boming through all the night.

173
Arellano University

bawal matulog at all force kaylangan sa gabi tulog konti tapos duty paulit ulit na ganun
same lang ang routine.

R: How many hours did you sleep?

P: On the first month of our being there we have a night duty and maybe we just sleep
for 4 hours, and during morning we are not allowed to sleep because we need to be at
full force.

R: Sir during stress defriefing what did you learned and what is the benefit of this to
you?

P: I learned that the most stress reliever is to share to others because if you will just
remain silent it maybe cause mental disorder.

R: Sir what is your religion?

P: Roman Catholic

dito.

R: During the battle did your faith become deep to God?

P: Of course I promise to God, everytime I sleep and wake up in the morning I pray.
Because prayer is the number one helping us and I remain faithful because he is the
only one eho will guide me in that situation.

174
Arellano University
College of Nursing

R: Sir when you came back here in your headquarter how did you cope to the stressed
that you felt?

P: On the first day I felt like I’m still there and there is a tendency….., or when we heard
an airplane nearly we felt like there is an enemy and it is a big empact to us that we will
like we are still there even we are already here.

R: Sir what are those things that are doing or do you have other activities?

P: Here in the city or our headquarters, we have so many compliances that we need to
finish soon and we have to pass that’s why I am focusing on it and also a way to forget
the memories in the battle. Because when we keep on remembering what happened in
the battle it will remains in our mind that’s why we keep ourself busy.

P: Para kasi sakin ang iniisip ko e sa civilian is to serve and protect so

R: After the war Sir what are the lessons that you learned?

P: For me is to serve and protect the civilian but how we protect to the civilian if they are
making way to be near to our enemy that’s why our goal is to get the civilians and that’s
our strategy here.

R: What are the changes in you during the war?

P: We didn’t able to get sick there Ma’am and if someone oof us go to market we just
allow him to buy our viamins supplement.

R: Sir during the war po ano po ang pinaka hindi ninyo po makakalimutan o nagbigay
