A Pain Beyond the Disabled and Handicap

On January 23, 2019, Seven Bridges, a handicapped student, allegedly committed suicide

after being bullied. He was born with a medical effect which had him undergo twenty six

surgeries or more. These surgeries required him to have a colostomy bag that helped him go to

the bathroom. He was always tormented and bullied because of the smell. As he switched school,

he was also bullied and tormented and struggled with the bullies on the bus ride to Kerrick

Elementary School. Also at School he was also getting bullied for a condition he had which was

called the bowel condition. This condition was where he has long lasting inflammation sores in

the innermost lining of his large intestines and rectrum. Many handicap and disabled people are

bullied because they are looked at differently, or are unable fit in the mix. These studies help

identify the sources that provides protective steps that can prevent and reduce bullying among

the handicap and other individuals. The handicap and disabled are subjected to vicious

attacks more often than other people because of the insensitivity to their physical and

mental conditions, are not often able to defend themselves, and society is impatient with the

special needs of this population.

In 1999,bullying came to everybody’s attention. There were two students named Dylan

Klebold and Eric Harris who killed twelve students and one teacher. This shooting happened
2

outside of Columbine High School at 11:15 am.They went mostly for anyone that believed in

god or anyone that looked different in any way. They then turned guns on themselves and

committed suicide.Dylan and Eric was getting picked on and was called “faggots”.They was

bullied because they couldn’t fight back and Eric was born with a mild chest indent. A mild chest

indent is where the lower area of his breastbone was pressing on the heart and lungs, causing

shortness of breath. During the investigation, the principle and the school then found out that

theses two students were getting bullied. In this situation everyone that was different got killed or

injured. Disabled and mentally ill students, adults or even kids that are in elementary need the

most attention because they become the target of anybody that feels like they are different or in

some cases aren’t able to defend themselves. There are different types of bullying. In fact there are

four major types called cyber bullying, verbal bullying, social bullying and physical bullying.

My first reason is the insensitivity to their physical and mental conditions. The meaning of

insensitivity is showing no concern for others feelings and lack of response to a physical

sensation, chemical,or being unaware or showing little or no regard for other people’s feelings

and emotions. It can also destroy the ability for to socialize and engage with others which can

lead to social isolation and loneliness. The meaning of social isolation is when an individual lacks

the sense of physically and emotionally socializing and also lacks the engagement of others. This

cause them to have a minimum of social contacts. They are also deficient which means lacking

self confidence or thinking they don’t enough of something in relationships. Children with

disabilities and mental illness are at an increased risk of being bullied. For kids with special

needs, making fun of their allergies or even trying to expose them in front of people or making
3

fun of them is bullying them also.In some cases bullying isn’t just serious it can also mean life or

death.Sensitivity comes in when there is any chemical and respiratory disabilities.People with

this disability or illness react to toxins in the air as well.It is very sad that even today the world

isn’t as sensitive and affectionate towards the disabled and mental illness people.Having

sensitivity towards mental and disabled people has everything to do with respect.Having respect

and naturally communicating with the mental and disabled makes them feel good about

themselves.Negative reactions towards the disabled and mental illness are the major causes of

stress. The reactions not only come from stranger but from, teachers, students, parents, friends,

neighbors, medical and service personnel.Anybody that has high sensitivity most likely will have

depression. Depression is an illness that involves the body, mood and thoughts that affects the

way a person eats, sleeps, or feels about his or herself and also thinks about killing something or

some one. It’s basically like a zombie has taken over you in this stage of you getting bullied to

going into deep, deep depression.

Another reason is that the handicap and disabled are most likely unable to defend

themselves. We are living in a violent society where the disabled and mentally ill for one reason

or another are unable to assert their own needs or rights or their ability to protect themselves. In

situations like this police doesn’t listen or more less care about it if it’s not real life criminal

action. They also don’t go by the laws that are supposed to protect them. There are several laws

that supposed to protect them. The listing of the laws is that they should be treated with

respect, privacy should be protected, they should receive the proper service for their ages. Now the

most important laws is that they must always know the treatment options and the alternatives that
4

come with it,and also they should get the care that doctors or the service people don’t

discriminate on the basis of age, race or any type of illness that the disabled or mentally ill victim

has. When someone is bullying an child or any person with disabilities and it is direct it creates a

hostile environment where ever they are at the moment where it is happening. The bullying may

cross the line and will then become “disability Harassment” says the (stop bullying Website). The

power of the disability advocacy has shifted in this century recognizing that disabled and

mentally ill people that lives in the same community with choices equal to others. There are three

disability models that helps us understand the community as a whole. The medical model is the

first one and it focuses on the person’s impairment, mental and physical medical

conditions.Another one is the Charity Model. This model offers vital support, and has traditional

fundraising that emphasize the helplessness of disability and risked undermining their autonomy,

independence and rights. This model is often adopted by mainstream media. The last one is the

Social model which is the most empowering for the disabled because it helps remove barriers

that restrict life and social choices. Following these steps and going by this process will make

you and your child life a better place for them and their community they are in. This process will

also help them in the future whenever they want to have kids and decide to get help for them as

well.
5

The last reason is that society is impatient with the special needs in this population. Some

service people or even teachers will act mean toward handicap and disabled people because of

their conditions. It is in our duty to treat them as a regular person. When caring foe special

patients it takes understanding and compassion. Dentist or nurses focus on meeting the needs and

limitations of these patients. For teachers or even service workers,it is their duty to help the

parents make the best choices for their children.Any parent that has had experience getting

bullied can help them engage with more people, and for teachers building a strong relationship

with them helps them want to learn more and also gives parents a good say so about their

children, so that they won’t have any regrets about their child have any type of condition, and as

regards to parents having a physical and mentally healthy relationship with them and and having

a strong family that supports you and your children plays a big part in there lives. Being a parent

to a child with special needs is unique but only if you make it that way. To prevent people or

servers that help the special needs be impatient with you should always check and see if those

servers are good enough and see if they are good people, by good people i mean you should talk

to them first and see how they handle themselves and see what have they did in previous

situations that involved special need kids. If you do find someone that is worthy to take care of

someone make sure that they understand what to do and also make sure that they aren’t

pretending to work with your child. You should also make arrangement so that they can also

make time for you so that your family can be on schedule. In situations likes these some severs

or any one that helps ignore the needs of the child. This will cause a lot of drama and may cause

the child to commit suicide for not having the right medication or therapy. Make sure that you

are giving the child the right medications so it can function correctly as well.
6

According to this graph mainly handicaps and disabled people who has learning

disabilities gets bullied for years. When i look at the handicap and disabled getting bullied it

really breaks my heart because I’ve actually been bullied before for being heavywieghted. I

sometimes wonder what it would be like to really be disabled or handicap so I can see and feel

the pain that most of this community is feeling. It breaks my heart to say it but some of the

people that is being mean and bullying the innocent kids should feel how life is where you is

almost about to give life up.Most people get really disgusted with disabled and handicap because
7

of how they look when it’s not even their fault. It bluntly points out all the people in this world

that is a victim of bullying that is handicap or disabled.

In conclusion, the handicap and disabled are at a higher risk for poor outcomes in life.

Bullying the mentally ill and handicap has been tolerated for so long. People shouldn’t take their

frustration out on these good people. Disabled and mentally ill getting bullied can transfer in to

different things such as death and depression.Bullying these innocent people can ruin their lives.

As research develops and more stories are getting put out about someone commiting suicide

because of getting bullied,it shows that children or anyone with disabilities or mentally ill

conditions are often on the receiving end of getting bullied by their peers, and as result become

involved in the bullying of others. We should get together as one when these situations like these

happen and bring it to the teachers or administrations of any public or private place. It is

unacceptable that some down play that they’ve been bullied before. They do this because they

don’t have enough support that they can go and talk about the incident, and realize that the

proper actions will take place from occuring in the future. This group of people are the most

particularly vulnerable population, and is our job as young learners or educators to make sure

that they will have a normal life and a safe environment that will enhance their life and give them

more confidence about themselves.
