EC 60297: VLSI Interconnects

Quiz-2

Date: 14/09/2018

Instructions

• Exam duration: 30 minutes. Maximum marks: 15

• There are a total of 3 questions.

• All the parts and sub-parts of a question must be answered in continuation.

1. Answer the following questions in short

(a) Voltage along a lossy interconnect is governed by a combination of (i) and (1)
(ii) phenomena. When the losses are high, the (iii) phenomena
dominates the voltage characteristics.
(b) Resistance per unit length of an RLC interconnect is 0.01Ω/µm. In the low-loss (2)
limit (R ωL) the characteristic impedance is Z0 = 100Ω. What is the attenuation
constant α of the interconnect?
(c) The characteristic impedance of a loss-less interconnect is Z0 = 100Ω and the phase (2)
velocity of the signal is vp = 108 m/s. What is the
(i) inductance per unit lenght L, and
(ii) capacitance per unit length C, of the interconnect.
Total for Question 1: 5

2. The equivalent Elmore model of an RLC interconnect of length l, without any load, has (5)
a transfer function
1
H(s) =
1 + 3s + 5s2
When the same interconnect is loaded with a gate of gate-capacitance Cg , its transfer
function is
1
H(s) =
1 + 5s + xs2
Find x in the above equation.

(a) Two sections of interconnects with equal characteristic impedance Z0 but different (3)
propagation constants γ1 = jβ1 and γ2 = jβ2 , and different lengths l1 and l2
repectively, are connected in cascade. Derive the total [ABCD] matrix of the
cascaded interconnects.
