NO TO HOMEWORK, YES TO ASSIGNMENT TIME

Today's generation, most students are physically and mentally exhausted in school, and the very root of
this is homework. Learners spend almost 7-8 hours a day in school, approximately 50 hours a week and 1,421 hours
in a school year. Adding to that is homework which learners usually spend 2 hours to work on. Having only two days
(Saturday & Sunday) every week to spend quality time with their family and as well as what most humans need- to
rest. And still there are tendencies wherein students could not spend or utilize this time because of other school
works (Practices, performance tasks, etc.). The proposing team firmly believes that homework is unnecessary for
those students at the secondary level, Junior and Senior High School.

The first point why the proposing team does not agree with homework is that homework causes learners
frustration, tiredness, and possibly even a loss of interest in their education. Generally, students are physically ex-
hausted after their long day of school, and they would like to relax. However, homework ties them down like a job,
and most days they have to work a “double shift’ to help them advance in their occupation as a student . Teens
should not have to think of school like a job. In short, homework can cause detrimental effects, such as stress, obesi-
ty, and motivation loss on a young student's life.

The second point is that learners have little to no time for personal activities. According to a national survey,
the amount of time spent in homework is up to 51% since 1980. Teens shouldn’t be spending more than half of their
time sitting down doing worksheets, projects, drill, etc. they should be honing their skills and passions or doing sports
and extracurricular activities. While sitting down and working has its place, too much of it can lead to a very unhealthy
life style. It can also be the cause of bad attitudes and other bad behavior. In addition, in the midst of high crisis and
inflation, students need to work part-time jobs after school or during their vacant time to earn money to sustain their
own needs in school and to help provide for their family.

Homework has an effect on family life as well. Studies show that most kids spend more time doing home-
work than spending time with family and friends. Instead of being at family dinners, a child could be stuck up in his or
her room doing homework. Furthermore, every child also have their duties in their home. Parents used to discipline
their children by giving them household chores to do either every after or before school. Students who focus too
much on their studies, cannot anymore do their responsibilities. On the contrary, students who chose to do the task
and chores will be too tired and sleepy to do their homework at night. Students either do the homework or take away
from family time or students can choose to not do the homework and fail the class.Either way, these students cannot
serve two masters at a time and needs proper scheduling of duties, to be done efficiently.

Indeed proper time management is needed to do things thoroughly and effectively. But the teenagers are
way too stressed to handle such huge commitment. They may be stressed because of family problems or maybe
because of “Status issues” and “bullying”, and other personal matters. The youth of today are too vulnerable and
fragile for mental breakdowns and could possibly lead from anxiety to depression. According to a report by Steven
Reinberg “Among more than 67,000 students surveyed, over 20 percent said they experienced stressful events in the
last year that were strongly associated with mental health problems, including harming themselves and suicidal
thoughts or attempts.”

“Assignments” and “homework” may sound alike but they have differences. Assignments are tasks assigned
to students by their teachers to enhance their learnings and to apply themselves to what they have learned . Home-
work, on the other hand, are assignments given, to be done at home. We cannot cancel assignments because stu-
dents also need to have an application of their knowledge attain in those 7-8 hours and to test if they truly understand
the topic. Knowledge without application is useless.
The proposing team formulated a new schedule for classes containing 30 minutes of “Assignment Time” in
both morning and afternoon session.

TIME SUBJECT

7:00 – 7:15 AM FLAG CEREMONY

7:15 – 8:15 AM 1ST SUBJECT
8:15 – 9:15 AM 2ND SUBJECT
9:15 – 9:30 AM RECESS
9:30 – 10:30 AM 3RD SUBJECT
10:30 – 11:30 AM 4TH SUBJECT
11:30 – 12:00 PM ASSIGNMENT TIME

TIME SUBJECT

1:15 – 2:15 PM 1ST SUBJECT

2:15 – 3:15 PM 2ND SUBJECT
3:15 – 4:15 PM 3RD SUBJECT
4:15 – 4:45 PM ASSIGNMENT TIME
4:45 PM DISMISSAL
This can benefit the teacher and the students for they will no longer have extra work to bring at home. The
sooner and earlier the students pass their assignments, the lesser their responsibilities would be and the teacher’s
worry in passing their grades in its due time. With this 1 hour of “Assignment Time”, the students can make the re-
quired assignments (that can be done just within the allotted time) flourishly and easily.
