SOCIAL NETWORKS

Social networks, sometimes called “relationship networks,” help people

and organizations connect online to share information, ideas, and interests.

While these networks aren’t the oldest type of social media, they

certainly define it now. These channels started as relatively simple services –

for example, Twitter was the place to answer the question “what are you

doing?” and Facebook was where you might check the relationship status of

that cute Economics 101 classmate.

Now, and especially since the rise of the mobile internet, these

networks have become hubs that transform nearly every aspect of modern

life – from reading news to sharing vacation photos to finding a new job-

into a social experience.

LinkedIn is a social networking site

designed specifically for the business

community. The goal of the site is to

allow registered members to establish

and document networks of people they

know and trust professionally. Basic

membership for LinkedIn is free. Network

members are called “connections.” Unlike other free social networking sites

like Facebook or Twitter, LinkedIn requires connections to have a pre-

existing relationship.

Viber is a calling and messaging

app that connects people–no matter who

they are, or where they’re from. With a

free and secure connection, over 1 billion

users worldwide communicate with their

loved ones through high-quality audio

and video calls, messaging, and much

more. All Viber calls and chats are

protected by built-in end-to-end encryption, so you can be sure that your

conversations are secure always.

Bookmarking sites

Social bookmarking is a way for people to store, organize, search and

manage “bookmarks” of web pages. Users save links to web pages that they

like or want to share, using a social bookmarking site to store these links.

These bookmarks are usually public, and can be viewed by other members

of site where they are stored.

Most social bookmark services are organized by users applying “tags”

or keywords to content on a Website. This means that other users view

bookmarks that are associated with a chosen tag, and see information about

the number of users who have bookmarked them. In many cases, users can

also comment or vote on bookmarked items.

Social bookmarking is also interchangeably sometimes referred to as

folksonomy, collaborative tagging, social classification, social indexing, and

social tagging. “Folksonomy” is a combination of the words folk and

taxonomy, hence a folksonomy is a taxonomy generated by a person or

group of people.
Dribbble is an excellent (and

beautiful) bookmarking site aimed at

designers. Not only is this a great place for

inspiration, it’s a great place to get traffic

to your site if you’re a designer, or have a

design team. A nice idea for gaining some

traction would be to encourage your design

team get involved. If they have some downtime, see if they’ll put something

unique and interesting together to go Dribbble. It’s a perfect way to

showcase your team.

Flipboard claims to be social

magazine which collects news and other

content and presents it in magazine-style

SOCIAL NEWS

Social news websites are communities that encourage their users to

submit new stories, articles, and media (images/videos) and share them

with other users or the general public. Depending on various factors, such as

the number of user votes for each item, some of these articles will be given

more prominence on the website.

Social news sites generally function via wisdom of crowd’s principle;

groups of individuals with different points of views are able to collectively

determine the value or importance of content disseminated through the

community. The users are offered the editorial power to influence the

visibility of content.

Many social news website also feature an online comment system,

which users discuss the issues raised in an article. Some of these sites have

also applied their voting system to the comments, so that the most popular

comments are displayed first. Some social news websites also have a social

networking function, in that users can set up a user profile and follow other

user’s online activity on the website.

Slashdot (sometimes abbreviated as /.) is a social news website that

originally billed itself as "News for Nerds. Stuff that Matters". It features

news stories on science, technology, and politics that are submitted and

evaluated by site users and editors. Each story has a comments section

attached to it where users can

add online comments.

Fark is a community website created by Drew Curtis that allows

members to comment on a daily batch of news articles and other items from

various websites. The site receives many story submissions per day and

approximately 100 of them are publicly displayed on the site, spread out

over the main page and tabs (Entertainment, Sports, Geek, Politics and

Business).
Media sharing

Media sharing sites allow you to upload your photos, videos and audio

to a website that can be accessed from anywhere in the world. You can then

The lines between media sharing networks and social networks are

blurring these days as social relationship networks like Facebook and Twitter

add live video, augmented reality, and other multimedia services to their

platforms. However what distinguishes media sharing networks is that the

sharing of edia is their defining and primary purpose.

While the majority of posts on relationship networks contain text,

messages on your mobile device.

platform that was launched in 2004

by a group of filmmakers. Since

then, the platform has grown to

over 80 million creators — most of

them artists in film, animation,

music and other works of art —

who’ve been able to use Vimeo as

a way to share and promote their

work. It differs largely from

YouTube because of its “artsy” distinctiveness. That’s not to say that artists

shouldn't promote their work on YouTube, because they should if their

audience is there.
Microblogging

Microblogging is a combination of blogging and instant messaging that

allows users to create short messages to be posted and shared with

when desktop web browsing and interaction was the norm.

graphical user interface (GUI) that resembles Facebook.

as Flickr, Twitter, and Facebook, a built-in Google Analytics package, and

custom themes. It was based in San Francisco and funded by Y

and files).
