THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

INTRODUCTION

Media’s role in a person’s life is important. Due to the fast paced developments in the present,

information technology became prominent through the years. The media industry, which is on the past

was merely for entertainment became the platform of education, business and culture-related field which

deemed more importance than its past. In general, media refers to the tools of mass communication

consists of television, the internet, cinema, newspapers, radios, magazines and more.

In the study of Matos (2013), a professor in Sociology in London University, globalization and

media are both helped in the distribution of power and wealth within and between countries; it is the core

critique of the imperialism and the connection of the developing countries for a relationship of

subordination.

Before the 1990s, most mainstream media were national in scope, since then most

communication media have become increasingly global. International flows of information have been

assisted by the development of global capitalism, new technologies and the increasing commercialization

of global television, and which have occurred as a consequence of the deregulation policies adopted by

various countries in Europe and US, paving the way for the proliferation of cable and satellite channel.

Rapid expansion of global communications can be traced back to the mechanical advancements of

technologies during the 18th/19th centuries, which began with the invention of the telegraph in 1837, and

included the growth in postal services, cross-border telephone and radio communications, and the creation

of a modern mass circulation press in Europe (Matos, 2012).

Global integration however has a drastic difference than globalization. Globalization is the word

used to describe the growing independence of the world economies, cultures and populations, brought

about by cross-border trade in goods and services, technology, and flows of investment, people, and

information; Global integration is is the degree to which the company is able to use the same products and

methods in other countries. It can involve the processes of product standardization and technology

development centralization. Local responsiveness is the degree to which the company must customize

their products and methods to meet conditions in other countries. For example, Global integration means

the process with which the local Indian market opens up to the global economy. Consequently, it amounts

to letting foreign factors influence India’s local business environment.

The researcher’s aim is to find how powerful media is and how it drives global integration. In an

article written by Bartle, life is incomplete without media as it provides easy means of communication,

the people’s access to information and the awareness the mass must have in their daily activities.

The present study aims to prove that media is indeed powerful and it has paved its way driving

global integration especially political, economic, environment and its effect to global peace.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter presents foreign and local literature that was written in support of the study and other

terms that might shed light in the process. This also includes foreign and local studies that are relevant to

the matter.

Global integration is depends on the global adequacy of the capital. This is the degree which the

company is able to use the same methods and products in different countries. From the literature, Global

Integration: Global integration is shrinking time, shrinking space and eroding national boundaries.” (IMF

& World Bank) Globalization possibly the most important force at work at this time in history describes

the process of increase integration and interdependence between national economies. It depicts the

breaking down of national boundaries leading to the establishment of a single world market. This

inevitable process of globalization has and will continue to be accelerated by the electronic revolution.

Advancement in telecommunications and information technology has led to growth in cross border

relationships initiated by the drivers of globalization.

There are various media types that are prominent of their periods and every one of them

contributes greatly to the globalization and global integration.

Print Media; Media consisting of paper and ink, reproduced in a printing process which is

traditionally mechanical. It is one of the oldest and most basic forms of communication. Print media has

the advantage of making a longer impact on the minds of the reader, with more in-depth reporting and

analysis. Examples of print media are newspapers, magazines, comics, books and brochures.

Broadcast Media; Media that reaches target audiences using airwaves as a transmission medium.

They reach a wider range of audiences. It provides valuable information that can inform and educate and

includes public service announcements, daily news, weather forecasts, interviews, and documentaries. It

daily news, weather forecasts, interviews, and documentaries. Example of these are the television, radio,

mobile phones, movies and films.

Outdoor Media or Out of Home Media; Media as that is commonly for advertising and is seen in

the streets. It is focused on marketing to consumers when they are "on the go" in public places, in transit,

waiting (such as in a medical office), and/or in specific commercial locations (such as in a retail venue). It

includes any type of marketing done outdoors to grab people’s attention. Example of these are the

billboards, neon signs, and electric advertising, exteriors of buses.

Electronic Media are created in the mid nineteenth century that revolutionize the ongoing process

of globalization. This are media types that required electromagnetic energy or electricity to use.

Digital Media: Contents are organized and distributed in different digital platforms. Digital Media

is a blend of technology and content, and building digital media products requires teams of professionals

with diverse skills, including technical skills, artistic skills, analytical and production coordination skills.

All of these skills need to be balanced on a team, with all team members focused on creating the best user

experience. Digital Media is a blend of technology and content, and building digital media products

requires teams of professionals with diverse skills, including technical skills, artistic skills, analytical and

production coordination skills. All of these skills need to be balanced on a team, with all team members

focused on creating the best user experience. Example of these are the internet, social media, computers,

video games, photos, digital art.

In the series of choices which one must prevail and answer the question which media type affect

global integration the most is the digital media. Today the media play a key role in enhancing

globalization and it also plays important role in facilitating culture exchange flows of information

between countries. The media spreads through international news broadcast, new technologies, television

programming, film and music. The important role in globalization process has internet, which connects all

the countries around the world. Internet is also called “world wide web”. Media refers to the different

means of communication like radio, television, and internet. It plays a very important role in shaping

human mind. Mass media is a section of the media determined to reach a greater audience. Most

globalization theorists believe that media has played an important role in acceleration of globalization.

World Economy

Media redefine the global landscape. It is the platform of communication and engagement

between the users but it drastically evolve more than that (La Haye, 2018).

The digital media was proven as the most effective way of business to reach new audience in a

global scale. It also helps fueling the economy by creating new jobs, democratizing information and

pushing brands beyond their border. Today, as business create their own digital content they break down

the barriers to reach new audiences that seems to be impossible in the past.

World’s Environmental Affairs

Media affects the process of environment factors in globalization. The effect media imprinted on

the people’s lives has made it impossible to ignore by other higher institutions.

Afesorgbor (2018), stated in an article from The Conversation, while some argue that

globalization has been bad for the environment, the move for pruning globalization might have the

adverse effect to the environment. The bleak view that globalization argue its global competition,

resulting in a boost in economic activities that deplete the environment and its natural resource.

Enviro (2018), stated that media has a far-reaching effects in our lifestyle. The advances in the

present and in farther future led to the improved communication and innovation beyond compare.

Activists have pointed out that the advertisement of products that led to consumption impacted in the

ecological cycle. The increased production of goods put stress to the natural resource.

Global Politics

The number of studies on how media affects a citizen’s opinion and behaviors has grown

throughout the years.

The internet plays a large role in governance, campaigns and activism, the debate continues about

how media affects and changes the world politics (Wihbey, 2013). People are finding platforms of

communication especially digital media in debating political, social and more serious issues than face to

face communication. The media became a feature of political and civic engagement for many. The users

employed their platforms to post their thoughts about issues, react to other’s posts, link to others content

and form groups with the same political perspective.

World Peace

Media has a role in promoting world peace in the article written by Newton (2010). Every bits of

information or communication advances in the history has further education and gave benefit that has

certainly proven to be correct. The advances in the media such as printing, the telegraph, the telephone,

radio, television and more, played a large role in promoting and understanding peace.

The Kennedy administration in the Cuban missile crisis ceased after the government resort to the

media to diffuse the said crisis.

In 1993, media was misled into promoting war in the war against Iraq or the same situation that

happened in the Tonkin Gulf in Vietnam.

CONCLUSIONS

This part of the research presents, interprets and concludes the gathered data as well as the

conclusions the researchers made after analyzation.

The researcher’s understanding and prior knowledge in the topic brought them to the stand

between the major effects of media in global integration.

Globalization brought Global Integration to the other countries and the Global Integration is a

factor of globalization to a country.

The advances in technology deemed important to media. Digital media became the platform for

the people of the present century in the progress in economy, the promotion of environmental affairs,

world peace and expressing themselves under the political and civic issues.

It is easier to click than to walk. A study showed that people are more inclined in using media

especially social networking sites, face to face conversation became scarce. In the sense of

communication users became more aware of creating contents, posting opinions and reviewing other’s

perception on the topic online.

Global integration is a factor of globalization. Globalization would never exists without media

and that applies the same in global integration. The power of media is remarkable, infinite and strong that

its impacts are clear and irreplaceable.
