Title:
To covert Galvanometer into Ammeter.

Objectives:-
To use Galvanometer as Ammeter and verify that converted Ammeter is working
right.

Apparatus:
1. Galvanometer. 5. H.R.B.
2. Voltmeter. 6. F.R.B.
3. Ammeter. 7. Battery.
4. Wire. 8. Keys.
Principle:
To convert Galvanometer into Ammeter we use low resistance in parallel.

Ammeter:
A measuring device used to measure electric current within range of several
amperes is called Ammeter.

Shunt Resistance:
A resistance having low value of resistance:

H.R.B

G
H.R.B

Procedure:
“To Find Rg of the Galvanometer”

1. First of all we have to find the value of Rg using half scale deflection
method.
2. A circuit consisting of a battery two keys, a galvanometer and two H.R.B. is
connected in a careful method.
3. H.R.B., key k1 and galvanometer is connected in series while Key k2 and
F.R.B. is connected in parallel.
4. When k1 is closed, galvanometer shows full deflection. To put angle ɸ in the
scale, we have taken out resistance keys from H.R.B.
5. Now close k2 , galvanometer shows zero deflection. To put deflection angle
ɸ in order , we have taken out resistance keys from F.R.B. We have to take
out the resistance keys until deflection comes to half by initial value.
6. The value of resistance from F.R.B is the actual value of Rg.

Sr No. R(Ω) H.R.B Ω Ω/2 Rp(Ω) Rg

Resistance
1 2000 19 9.5 109 109
2 10000 14 7.5 105 105
3 6000 16 8 108 108

Rg = (109+108+105)/3.

Rg = 107.6 Ω.

Step 2:- “ To find Ig”:

1. In order to find Ig , we have to make circuit diagram. When k1 is closed ,
galvanometer shows full deflection.
2. In order to make keys in range, we have to take keys from H.R.B. from
which the value of R is noted.
3. To find the voltage , voltmeter is connected with battery in series.

H.R.B

Calculation:
Ig = V/(Rg +R).

V =1.4 v

R = 4300 Ω.

Rg = 107.6 Ω.

Ig = 1.4/(107.6 + 4300).

Ig = 0.31 mA.

Step 3 “Verification”.
The last step is to compare converted ammeter with actual ammeter readings.
Galvanometer is connected in parallel to shunt resistance and it is then
connected to standard Ammeter.

Sr No. R(Ω) I (mA) of Division of Ig Error
Ammeter Galvanometer
1 20 25 27 27 2
2 25 20 25 25 5
3 15 30 30 30 0

Precisions:
1. Connection should be carefully.
2. When k2 is plugged , galvanometer should show zero deflection.
3. Error should be very small in verification of Ammeter.
