AIX Disk Cloning FAQ - The Nutshell Edition

02-November-2004

Assumptions: You have two or more virtually identical pSeries systems (or LPARs).

1. The following filesets must be installed on the primary system:

bos.alt_disk_install.boot_images9
bos.alt_disk_install.rte
Bos.msg.en_US.alt_disk_install.rte

I strongly recommend installing the relevant PTF as it fixes the problem that Step
#12 corrects. i.e. If you have this PTF installed, you can skip Step #12.

AIX 5.1 APAR: IY35312 [Hint: Click here]

AIX 5.2 APAR: IY35456 [Hint: Click here]
AIX 5.3 APAR: N/A

2. If the primary system is running HACMP, you must shutdown the cluster and the
Cluster Manager.

3. You will need a physical volume in the primary system that is not part of an active
volume group. For the purposes of this FAQ, hdisk0 will be cloned to hdisk1.

lspv
hdisk0 000030029158b447 rootvg
hdisk1 00003002490a45b7 None

4. On the primary system; as root, use the command:

alt_disk_install -P all -CB hdisk1

5. Remove hdisk1 from the ODM using the command: rmdev -dl hdisk1

6. Shutdown the system using the command: shutdown -F now

7. Remove hdisk1 from the primary system (LPAR) and install it in the target system
(LPAR). It will be necessary to know the bus & disk device ID in the target system
for step #10.

8. You can power-on the primary system, it should boot without error.

9. Power-on the target system and enter SMS.

10. Use the SMS menus to select newly cloned disk as the boot device.

11. As the system boots, you will be prompted to select the console device. This is
normal.

12. If you have installed the APAR mentioned in Step #1, this procedure is unnecessary.
The primary and target systems will have identical /etc/ct_node_id files - a very bad
thing if you are using any of the following:

LPARs
Dynamic LPARs
HACMP-ES
HACMP-ES-CRM
Service Agent [phone home trouble reporting]
PSSP
CSM
GPFS
VSD
RVSD
Oracle Parallel Server
Oracle 9i RAC

On the target system, regenerate the /etc/ct_node_id file using the commands:

/usr/sbin/rsct/install/bin/recfgct

Recycle the daemons using the commands:

/usr/sbin/rsct/bin/rmcctrl -z
/usr/sbin/rsct/bin/rmcctrl -A
/usr/sbin/rsct/bin/rmcctrl -p

13. alt_disk_install is a wonderfully configurable tool for installing AIX. This FAQ is for
those that need to get something done now, without wading through all the options.
