Personal Statement (Second Draft)

I am applying for photography because I want to further my knowledge in the

subject and hopefully either become a freelance photographer or a lecturer at
university for photography. I am excited to take this course because I love
learning in general and the course is both very hands on and there are lectures.
In university, I think it would be a lot more interesting than college as it is a lot
more intricate and in depth. It will allow me to express myself more with the
style of photography that I enjoy. There is also a lot of research that goes into
essays which allows me to push myself and go above and beyond through
research. Getting a degree in photography will make me feel like I accomplished
something huge and is an opportunity to get the most out of life post-uni.

I have always done creative studies through school. I did two creative studies
for my GCSEs and they both lasted a total of 3 years- coursework and exams.
So far, I have completed one year of college and I passed the first year. My
favourite project was my Final Major Project. I took photos of a child and created
a diptych from them. I wanted to show the innocence and purity of a child
because I feel children are oversexualised in the media today and are forced to
grow up quickly due to social media. I really feel as if I got the point across and
showed the innocence of the child. I do enjoy taking photos on my phone but
that’s as far as my photography goes outside of college. In the past, I have
worked as a waitress in a hotel’s restaurant. This taught me many skills that
would be relevant in this course. I had to work under pressure a lot and in a
given time space as we only served food for a certain amount of times, so I had
to ensure all of the orders were completed by a certain time. I also learned to
work both individually and as a team- I would do shifts on my own if there were
a small number of customers. If there were a lot of customers booked in, we
would work together and have assigned tables to make the shift run smoothly
and we would help each other if we needed to. I also learned the value of being
on time as we had a very early start on most days (7:30am) so my punctuality
has improved massively. From this job, I realised that I can pick things up very
easily and I am a very hands-on learner.

Furthermore, I have a very strong interest in the subject due to seeing

photography on Instagram. I would see all of these professional photos and was
intrigued to know how they were made and I wanted to be as good as them. I
like a lot of different genres of photography, but my main interest is either
editorial or landscape photography because it really gives you the opportunity to
represent what you want and show emotion through each piece. My
favourite photographer is Martin Parr because his style is very unique and you
would be able to tell it's his work at first glance. The reason I love Parrs style is
because it’s not conventional. It has many weird quirks, angles and lighting. This
makes his work very noticeable and stands out to regular photographers. I also
have a very good work ethic and learning about things I find interesting makes
me happy. this mainly involves watching true crime documentaries and history. I
would be a good fit in university because I am very sociable and willing to try
anything new, whether it is being the subject to demonstrate something to the
class or just going out with new people.
