As I discovered more about entrepreneurship I noted a significant trend happening, a rise

in millennials in the field. Based on the research I conducted I noticed that most millennials are

starting their own venture and business because they are dedicated to making a lasting impact on

society and doing something different from their parents. These are the two factors I considered

when conducting my research.

So first I realized that entrepreneurs were becoming increasingly popular and this was

because most millennials are growing up with the need to become different than her parents.

Similar to my parents I wanted to do something that inspired and challenged me instead of

following a similar path as them and becoming a regular employee. According to some articles,

the influence of immigrant parents is very heavy on determining what their kid does when they

grow up. The article discussed how many South Asian children are put through the constant

pressure of achieving more than their parents, and “doing what they were not able to.” This type

of mindset has been affecting my upbringing as well.

Being raised by two immigrant parents I have realized the importance of education and

working hard to achieve the results I want. This is what pushes me into the career path of an

entrepreneur because I believe hard work will get me the results I desire. Being an entrepreneur

involves much planning and coordination that requires the mentality of a multitasker.

However, coming from an immigrant household has also taught me that I am given many

more opportunities than my parents and cousins were. Research studies prove that immigrant-led

household to push their kids to achieve greater things because they didn't come from similar life

that their children are being raised in. The study contributes to an understanding of why family

pride, prestige, and honor exert so much pressure on educational aspirations. The findings

indicate a need to synthesize our understandings of collective identities and the complexities of

living in collective transnational communities to meaningfully explain intergenerational conflicts

that the second generation faces with their parents, especially regarding educational

achievements. It was found that these communities hold some form of social control over

families which trickle down to the second generation through the need to maintain a good

reputation. Thus, the pressures that the second generation feel are reflective of the pressures their

parents feel to maintain their standings. Which is why essentially most entrepreneurs are

motivated by a struggle or motivation in their household. This is essentially why I think

entrepreneurship is the right field for me because I feel after learning this new information is that

I have the skills and expertise that will build me for this career path.

Most entrepreneurs delve into the career because now more presence of social media

there are a lot of social problems arising. Because of this entrepreneurs want new ventures

because they want a change in life – meaning they weren’t trying to find employment in a

corporation, they were trying to get away from it. I believe, while starting your own company

may look attractive from inside a company, the stark reality of risking one’s livelihood, financial

stability, family, etc., is a tough bar to cross. What motivates these people to leave the relative

comfort of a steady corporate income and strike out on their own? Is it the same reason – their

company doesn’t value their skills for innovation and is just measuring them on execution? Or

something else?

The answer to these will depend on the person that is starting to become an entrepreneur

that there are a lot of gray areas that are in the field. There is no possible study that could prepare

one for the number of studies that will be taken to assess a company that an entrepreneur will

potentially start.
