2. GENERAL INFORMATION

2.1. WINDCUBE - Principle of Measurement

The WINDCUBE is an active remote sensor based on Light Detection And Ranging
technique (Fig. 1). The heterodyne LIDAR principle relies on the measurement of the
Doppler shift of laser radiations backscattered by the particles in the air (dust, water droplets,
aerosols…). A laser pulse is sent into the atmosphere. The backscattered light is collected,
converted into an electronic signal and sent to a computer. A specific signal processing
algorithm is used to determine the scattered signal Doppler shift, and though, the wind speed
along the line of sight. The time for the light pulse to travel out to the target and back to the
LIDAR is thereby used to determine the range to the target.

 Principle of Measurement

2.2. WINDCUBE – Block Diagram

The WINCUBE is composed of 3 main elements (Fig.2) :

• Optical Head - containing the emission and reception optics

• Electronics Unit – containing optoelectronic elements from laser source to detector
• Computer - for data acquisition, signal processing and data saving. Processor is
Pentium Mobile 1.8GHz with 1024 Mb RAM.

- 10 min average data files:

WLS7-00XX_YYYY_MM_DD__hh_mm_ss.sta files contain 10 minutes time period
processed statistical data in ASCII format (Fig. 25).
- Average data comes from scalar calculation (fluctuation of direction are not taken
into account in the calculation of the 10 minutes average wind speed).
- Timestamp is relative to the instant when the average is calculated; then, averaged
data given at instant t correspond to data acquired during the past 10 minutes.
- Data relative to a given altitude are grouped in columns. The titles of the columns of
a same group are indexed with the number of the range gate (for example, if the user
selected the following altitudes: 40m, 60m, 80m, and 100m, data relative to 40m will
be indexed with 1, data relative to 60m will be indexed by 2…).
