I can use verb tenses to convey various times, sequences, states, and
conditions.

Verb Tenses in Mentor Texts

“Now Amber had seen Anna with her family, inching their way up the
Mountain. She wanted to be friends,” (Johnston, Amber on the Mountain,
1994, p. 5).

“But the turtle is safe in her world of weed and snaps her beak on tiny
crabs and shrimps,” (Davies, One Tiny Turtle, 2001, p. 8).
