Children Should Not Be On Social Media

According to Healthy Children ¨more than 70% of teens visit social media sites

everyday¨ (Healthy Children, n.d.). This often can cause not normal behavior especially if there

is a lot of hate meaning (dislike of something) in today's society. It also cause grades to go down

for students in school it is affecting their education. Teens under 18 are on their phones way to

much causing manny problems. It causes cyberbullying, depression, tiredness, loss of eye vision,

car crashes, effects on grades and self injuries. In my opinion teens under 17 are not matured

teens so therefore make not matured choices on social media. According to Medium, “due to the

constant pressures of social media, it has becoming too overwhelming with can lead to a

disadvantage in the teenagers education and future, which is why the use of social media should

be limited so that is no longer the main priority of the teen”(Monroy, 2016). This means it can

cause depression teens under 18 wouldn't take this well. According to New York Post,¨ Experts

warn increased levels of pressure and stress from social media use may be fuelling a rise in

mental health issues. Social media should be banned for individuals under the age of 18 because

it will decrease incidents of cyberbullying and sexual misconduct; reduce the amount of

phone-related deaths caused by vehicles, self-injury, and depression and overall improve student

academic performance” (New York Post, n.d.).

Social media today can affect people's behaviors according to Healthy Children, “76% of

teens use at least one social media site. More than 70% of teens visit multiple social media sites,

such as Facebook, Snapchat, and Instagram”.(Healthy Children n.d.) Teens displays on social

media often show risky behaviors, such as substance use, sexual behaviors, self-injury, or eating

disorders. 32 percent of online teens admit to having experienced a range of menacing online

advances from others. Teens are the ones who usually go through changes in behavior because

today social media criticizes people’s pictures. According to study.com, ''Everyone else was

doing it and I didn't want to be left out.'' Some teens like to follow what other people are doing

on social media.

According to The Brown Daily Herald, “researchers tracked female first-year college

students’ use of 11 forms of social media including television, movies, music, the Internet and

video games over the course of an academic year and found they spent nearly 12 hours a day

using social media on average. To collect data, researchers administered surveys to nearly 500

first-year women at a northeastern university about their weekly media use. At the end of each

semester, the women reported their GPA” (Brown Daily Herald, 2015). This data shows that

students spend a great amount of time throughout the day on social media This can result in

students not having time to do homework at home such as completing projects, makeup work,

and studying for tests. According to The star online, ”Researchers from the University of

Bamberg, Germany conducted a study which clarified social media does in fact have a negative

impact on students academics, reviewing 59 studies that involved 30,000 young people

worldwide ”(n.d.). Another quote from The Star Online,”However, those who used social

networking sites frequently, regularly posting messages and photos did have slightly lower

grades” (2018). This shows social media does in fact affect students academics. My opinion is if

students use less social media their academics would improve and can improve socializing with

other students and teachers. Socializing could also help on job interviews and meetings.

According to Huffpost, “Most teens are on their phones all the time - in school, in bed at

night, when they go to the bathroom, while you are trying to talk to them, and while they are

trying to do their homework” (2015). This shows teens use their phones when doing a lot of

things during the day. They usually are posting or texting on social media throughout the day

now imagine doing the same things everyday according to brain picking it takes 21 days to get a

habit of doing something. Teens and even adults use their phones almost every day and there is

365 days in year. According to Psychology Today, “We did find that for a small minority of

individuals there was a significant detrimental effect on many aspects of their life, including their

real life relationships and academic achievement among those still in education, we argued that

such signs are indicative of addiction.” There are not a lot of research about this topic but this

shows that it can indeed cause addiction. According to Psychology Today, “We did find that for

shows that social media can in fact affect teens mental health. There is 7.53 billion people living

in earth in 2017 which half are teens or are kids or baby growing up to be teens. Parents should

be aware of social media problems because social media is everywhere if not now it would be in

the future there are benefits but also are drawbacks. Social media can cause many problems so

guardians and teens should be aware of this and be careful on it.
