Brinkbäumer, Klaus. “SPIEGEL Interview with Naomi Klein: 'The Economic System We Have

Created Global Warming' - SPIEGEL ONLINE - International.” SPIEGEL ONLINE,

SPIEGEL ONLINE, 25 Feb. 2015, https://www.spiegel.de/international/world/global-

warming-interview-with-naomi-klein-a-1020007.html.

In this article Griffinadmin appears in a Griffin Canisius College Student Paper where he

states the impacts that global warming will have on the inhabitants of the earth and how we can

stop it. The article was written on October 19, 2018, where the author states that on the 8th of

October Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (ICPP) released a special report on the

impacts of global warming. The report states that if the temperature goes up by 1.5 degrees

Celsius above “pre-industrial” levels there will be drastic changes in the planet’s inhabitant's

lives. Throughout the article, the author says that the U.S already has the tools it needs to slow

down such effects, but the planet is far past fixing. The U.S is looking for a cure-all but that isn’t

the solution. Lastly, it has to be a global change, not just a national change. Though the U.S has

to be apart of it being a large industrial company.

The author wants us to know the impacts global warming will have on Earth’s

inhabitants, and how we need to take action because within the next 12 years it might be too late.

The audience that this article targets are influencers and anyone who will listen. It isn’t one

person’s job to slow down the effects but it needs to be everyone. The article was written write

after the ICPP report came out making a present and current matter. Global warming is still a

current topic but during this time the report must have had stirred some feelings of fear within

the people.
Stouffer 2

There was not a specific author listed in this article. Though the article was posted on a

college website. This provides some sense of comfort when talking about credibility.

Considering this article is based on the findings of the Report written by ICPP I find this source

to be credible. Throughout the article, the author refers to all sources that were used in making

this article. The article itself was used as a source for another article. All of these details help to

form the conclusion that this is a well known and reliable resource.

The article helps me to prove the point that Global Warming is a current problem and

will be for a long time. The article gives me evidence to bring up the fact that not only will we be

affected by global warming the future generations will as well. The article was written last year

so it isn’t a very current piece but it is still relevant. Not to mention the fact that there is data

from the ICPP study in the article which I can quote.

``Narum, David. “International Cooperation on Global Warming and the Rights of Future

Generations.” Sinclair College Off-Campus Authentication Form, Policy Sciences, Feb.

The book by David Narum, International Cooperation on Global Warming and the Rights

of Future Generations appeared for me in the OhioLink catalog, the article states that it should be

a requirement to help save the planet and help save the future generations. The article states

repeatedly throughout its entirety that people are being selfish and not thinking about future

generation's wellbeing. Though the author speaks of needing to save the world, he contradicts

himself when he says that some research says “without absolute proof of future environmental
Stouffer 3

impacts”(22). Though the author goes into much detail about whether or not the world will be

affected by global warming furthermore. In the end, he comes up with the conclusion that global

warming is occurring and will affect the planet in future generations. Another point that the

author was trying to get across is the fact that people need to feel an obligation to the planet on a

global scale and not on a national scale. Policymaking for such a matter of Global Warming will

strike up many arguments, and contradictions but the people need to see the bigger picture for

the future generations.

The author wrote this article to convince people to understand the deeper meaning of

Global Warming. Global Warming won’t just affect you it will affect future generations who do

not have control over the Earth’s future as we do now. The book is for a mature audience and for

people who can make a difference. There are several science terms used, and some political

views were stated in this book.

David Narum is an adjunct professor and winner of the American Planning Association

Grassroots Initiative Award of Merit. Narum has several awards that have been appointed to him

along with a Ph.D., and I found this using his Research Gate profile. The author also has been

cited in other pieces as well. Based on this information I believe he is a reliable source.

Throughout the book, data and other sources were cited correctly.

Reading through the book I found that several places help support my claim that global

warming will affect future generations. In one paragraph it says that action needs to be taken

now because within a few years the future generation’s fate is already determined. This is a

major part of my final essay. While the U.S is waiting for a fix-all solution there are smaller

things that we can do now to slow down the fast progression. This is one of the many helpful

details that will bring my final essay together.

Rainey, James. “Global Warming, Now Brought to You by Your Local TV Weathercaster.”

NBCNews.com, NBCUniversal News Group, 20 June 2018,

https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/global-warming-now-brought-you-your-local-

tv-weathercaster-n884831.

James Rainey’s article “Global warming, now brought to you by your local TV

weathercaster”, appeared on June 20, 2018, on the NBC News website explaining Steve

LaPointe and his journey to discovering the truths about global warming. LaPointe is a local

weather forecaster who decided to research on what global warming is and the effects of it.

LaPointe explained how people normalize global warming, and think of it as an everyday

occurring. LaPointe was so interested that he read research papers and consulted with other

meteorologists. The article goes on to talk about The Climate Matters campaign and the

frontman Jim Gandy. The article continues to talk about the reader’s reactions.

The article’s purpose is to show the people how little they know about climate change.

The article is meant to help the people on all different platforms to understand the causes, effects,

and solutions to global warming. The article is meant for the general populous as said before it is

to inform people about global warming. Being on television and working in the same news

station it must have been easier to talk to LaPointe. This helped the author to get to a credible

meteorologist.

Author James Rainey has a lot of work experience as an author and has written a lot of

well-known pieces on the site. Rainey has worked for many well-known newspapers such as the

LA Times. Considering the author has direct quotes from many sources, and has been cited I

would say he is a credible source.

Stouffer 5

Reading through the article the more local view is very helpful for my essay. Being a

more local article based on regular people it gives a new perspective. It helps appeals to pathos

and makes global warming more relatable and understandable. When other authors use bigger

words and scientific, and political views it can be confusing to the reader. In this article, it

explains the realization of global warming on a more realistic scale.

Orlowski, Jeff, director. Chasing Ice. Home, http://www.chasingice.com/.

Director Jeff Orlowski of “Chasing Ice” takes place in Greenland and digs deep into how

not just humans are being affected by global warming. The film is 75 minutes long focusing

mainly on caving ice caps. James Baulog is the main character of this documentary. The movie is

about his mission to the Arctic to take pictures for National geographic. Though when he arrives

he starts to question whether or not global warming is the cause of all of the loss of the glaciers.

Baulog starts his mission there and then to bring undeniable evidence that global warming is

taking place and it is progressing at a terrifying rate.

The purpose of this film is to, as said before bringing “undeniable evidence” of our

changing planet. The film has been shown in more than 172 countries and on all 7 continents.

There was so much effort put into this that Baulog spent several years gathering those videos that

were compressed into seconds in the film. There was so much put into this film that the audience

that it was intended for people who are interested in learning what is going on in other parts of

the world due to global warming. Considering the environment was so harsh the film’s quality

depended on the day.

Everyone participating in the film cared for the cause and have awards, and experiences

to support themselves. The director himself has a lot of experience in directory and dealing with
Stouffer 6

nature such as Apple, National Geographic, Netflix, Stanford University, and the Jane Goodall

Institute. Not to mention that the film has six major film awards along with several smaller

awards. The director and Baulog worked closely with National Geographic and many more

reliable sources.

This film helps to prove that there is no longer an excuse to say that you were miss

informed. There are so many sources that will provide hard evidence to support global warming.

With my other sources, there has been a variety of them to help inform the general populous.

There are films, and books, and articles, and news channels. Not only the convenience, but it

gives video and photographic evidence to support that global warming is truly happening

whether or not we like it or not.

Person. “Are You Optimistic About the Earth's Future?” Smithsonian Second Opinion,

Smithsonian Second Opinion, 12 June 2017,

https://www.smithsoniansecondopinion.org/climate-change/are-you-optimistic-about-

earths-future-180964375/

Dr. David Skorton Starts a discussion during the Smithsonian second opinion talk, the

topic was “Are You Optimistic About The Earth’s Future?”, where a group of experts talks about

the earth’s future. This article was formated in a way that is is formatted as in a conversation

format. The people involved in the conference were David Skorton, Denise G. Fairchild, Steve

Monfort, Mary Evelyn Tucker, Anson Hines, Catrina Rorke, and Jedediah Purdy. All of these

gathered to talk about the state of the planet. The two major things that were addressed in this

conversation were climate change and species extinction. The group questioned whether or not

we should be optimistic about our future.

Stouffer 7

The purpose of this conversation is to understand what is going on in the world and,

whether there is hope for our planet yet. Everyone involved in this discussion was very well

educated and informed on the topics that were discussed. This conservation was directed to an

older, and well-educated audience. To truly understand what was being said in the article you

have to have a big vocabulary and a large understanding of several different topics that are

currently occurring in the world.

There is technically no author for this piece because it is recorded and transcribed the

conversation. Though everyone in the conversation was very well educated and informed. For

example, Steve Monfort, who is the John and Adrienne Mars Director and chief scientist at the

Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute. Another example is Denise G. Fairchild, who's

president of the Emerald Cities Collaborative. It's a national nonprofit organization working to

ensure equity inclusion while building resilient green and healthy economies. Considering there

were Seven people involved there is not enough room to list all of their achievements, and titles.

Suffice it to say they were all professionals, and knew what they were talking about it.

Within the conservation, it covered personal outlooks on climate change and global

warming. There were also many references to solutions that could work. When the people in the

conference started to talk about species extinction as a result of global warming, this will help to

support my claim that we are predetermining the future generation's fate.

Torres, Angel. “Bill Nye on Climate Change: 'It's Not 50 to 75 Years Away - It's 10 or 15'.”

MSNBC, NBCUniversal News Group, 22 May 2019, http://www.msnbc.com/velshi-

Stouffer 8

In the article “Bill Nye on Climate Change: 'It's Not 50 to 75 Years Away - It's 10 or 15'”

author Angel Torres writes about Bill Nye’s appalling video on May 12th discussing climate

change. The article is pretty short but the main focus of the article was the video. The video aired

on MSNBC which confronted the previous video where Bill Nye the science comedian who has

several videos teaching children the value of science, drops several profanities. Nye was very

heated on the topic of global warming involving carbon emissions.

The author’s purpose was to inform people who had missed the airing of the video to fill

them in and help them understand what happened. This was a big deal in the media, because of

the reputation of Bill Nye. The audience this was directed to was the media Bill Nye wanted to

grab people’s attention and turn it to global warming, and he did. People started to pay attention

to.

The author Angel Torres wrote all facts based on the video the author did not need to rely

on any information that was not stated in the video. The video is reliable due to the fact the Bill

Nye is highly praised, and a winner of many awards. Nye explains that people who pull out the

Hockey Stick graph that make “climate change deniers” like to wave around to help show how

climate change has been debunked. Though Bill Nye proves the “climate change deniers” wrong.

The reason I am using this article is for the video. The video shows a highly appraised

man cursing, and setting things on fire to prove a point. This grabs people’s attention making

them want to know more. This will help to grab people’s attention and help promote saving the

planet or at least prolonging the outcome. Along with this Nye also stated facts about Carbon

Emission and prices. Nye compared the costs that now being used to clean up the results of

global warming and the cost that will take in the future compared to the costs if we were to

slowly try and help save our planet.

Walsh, John. “Menu.” National Climate Assessment,

https://nca2014.globalchange.gov/report/our-changing-climate/future-climate-change.

John Walsh’s and Donald Wuebbles’ article “ Future Climate Change” which appeared

on globalchange.gov goes in-depth on how the earth will change within the next few decades.

The article compares what it would be like if the world on a global scale were to contribute to

helping reduce global warming, and what it would be like if continue just like we do now. The

article focuses on key terms such as the world’s climate is projected to continue to change

through the intensity of it depends primarily on the amount of heat-trapping gases emitted

globally. Though what is nice about this article are the graphs and the visualizes which help the

reader to understand what is being said. The article does not just focus on the U.S it references

many other different countries.

The purpose of this article is to show statistically what is projected to happen to the world

on a global scale within the next few decades. Based on the phraseology it is apparent that the

audience for this article is the middle class and traditional level of knowledge. The words are

phrased and used in ways that are easy to read. After each scientific term, it is explained and told

what it means in context. The graphs and the subtitles under them help the reader to understand

what the purpose of the graph is.

John Walsh and David Wuebbles are the authors of “Future Climate change”, and

discussed the reasons behind climate change and what the future entails. The authors both

graduated from well-respected universities, and while looking through the staff for the website,

several other people helped in the writing and publication of this piece. The information gathered
Stouffer 10

and the data compiled was all put in by a group effort, and everyone involved has impressive

background experience.

This article’s context and visualizes will be very useful in my final essay. The visuals will

help appeal to logos who like to see the logic. I also think the comparison between what the

world would be like in a decade if we tried to help prolong the full-blown effects of global

warming, and what the world would be like if we keep on ignoring it. Granted there are some

organizations out there fighting global warming people need to understand it whether it is in a

video, book, or article.
