Empirical analysis of the relationship between the preferred musical genre to the

arithmetic skills of Grade 11 students of SRCCMSTHS

Scope and delimitation of the study

The data used in this study is only limited with the Grade 11 respondents currently studying at Senator
Renato “Companñero” Cayetano Memorial Science and Technology High School, which is located at 31st
cor 51st Sts., Pamayanang Diego Silang, Ususan, Taguig City, Philippines.
The students who answered the questionnaire were chosen randomly to eliminate biases and to ensure
more reliable results and data. The research will only focus on arithmetic skills and musical genre to
narrow it.

Background of the study

Since the early days in the evolution of man, its survival has depended on it listening to natural rhythms
and sounds of the earth. From the sounds of incoming would-be predators, to finding sources of water.
And ever since man could hear and recognize these sounds, it has attempted to reproduce it with various
instruments and thus creating music for its enjoyment and leisure and music as a whole evolved from
these happenings. Music has been a part of our lives and some studies even prove that it stimulates parts
of the brain meant to augment certain aspects of motor and neural skills.

Significance of the Study

The findings of this study will reflect on how certain music genre listened by individuals can affect their
numerical skills. It is known that some of the most in-demand jobs require a good or average performance
in this area (e.g. engineering, architects). Music on the other hand, has some huge contribution on the
society for the past decades presenting us with different tunes, beats and rhythm that gave us some of
history’s greatest hit songs. With the study of the researchers, companies and huge industries can discover
what type of musical genre they can make their employees listen to in order to improve their mental
abilities. Schools can play these songs every corridors during break time or lunch to also make their
students hear kinds of music that can help them with their studies, skills and performance in class.
Common people who loves listening to different genre of music will be able to determine what genre they
must check out to increase their arithmetic abilities. If success will be met by the researchers, it can be
identified that listening to music not only brings amazing and mind-blowing tunes but can also aid in
training the brain with more mathematical skills.

Statement of the Problem

The main problem of this study is to analyze and describe the effect of preferred music genre on the
arithmetic skills of Grade 11 students from Sen. Renato “Compañero” Cayetano Memorial Science and
Technology High School. Specifically, it attempts to answer the following research questions;

1. Does preferred music genre affect the arithmetic abilities of students?

2. Will the frequency of exposure affect the arithmetic abilities of the students?
3. Will the length of each exposure period affect the arithmetic abilities of the students?
