Course Objectives: Student shall be able to gain knowledge on the various materials and components used in building construction, their compositions and
properties. Further, they will also comprehend about their applications with respect to the corresponding construction technology.

Pre-requisites: Nil

Course Contents/Syllabus:

BUILDING CONSTRUCTION - I Weightage
Module I: Introduction to Building Components & Basic Building materials
Introduction to components of building from foundation to roof. Illustration of typical section of a double storey building showing
details from foundation to roof including parapet wall. Studio exercise of typical foundations of both load bearing and RCC 15%
construction.
Module II: Brick, Clay & Clay products
Bricks: Composition, Sizes, Properties and Classification of bricks, Tests for bricks. Introduction to Brickworks: Masonry bonding &
ornamental bonding, which will focus on types of Brick bonds viz. English, Flemish, Stretcher & Rat-trap bonds, details of brick layouts
including corners, junctions etc. Brick columns and different types of arches, corbelling etc. Substitutes of bricks. 20%
Clay & clay products: Mud including stabilized Earth, Brick tiles, Tiles, their properties and use - terra-cotta availability & application.
Module III: Stones and Stone Masonry
Classification of stones. Common building stones used in India. Characteristics and uses of stones, dressing of stones, artificial stones.
Introduction of Stonework: Rubble and Ashlars masonry. 10%
Module IV: Lime & Cement
Lime: Classification of lime. Fat and hydraulic lime – properties and use.
Cement: Types of Cement viz. Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) and Portland Pozzolana Cement (PPC) and their compositions and
brief functions of the constituents of OPC and PPC. Areas of applications of OPC and PPC. 25%
Properties of cement: Fineness, Soundness, Setting times, etc. Grades of cement used in construction. Methodology of storage of
cement at site.
Module V: Sand, Mortar & Plain Cement Concrete
Sand: Sources of Sand, Classification, Test of Sand. Grades of sand and their application areas.
Mortar: Types of mortar – lime mortar, lime-surkhi mortar, cement mortar. Different grades of mortar, their compositions, properties
and areas of application for different construction works. Preparation of cement mortar and methodology of applications. Process of 20%
curing and importance of curing in Plaster Work. Neat Cement Slurry and its usage.
Module VI: Professional Skill Development Activities 10%
Hands-on experience of construction technology & familiarization with vernacular terminology on site.

Student Learning Outcomes:

• Students will be able to gain knowledge on various construction materials, their constituents, properties and areas of application.
• Students will be able to learn about various components of a building along with nomenclature and foundation details of a load bearing and a RCC
structure.
• Students will be able to graphically represent various building components made of different materials along with its corresponding construction
technology and methodology of construction.

Pedagogy for Course Delivery:

• The course will be delivered by means of lectures, studio exercises, group presentation and domain specific, structured site visits. Market visits by
students shall be instructed for their own assessment of availability and prices. Practical exercises on usage of various building materials shall be
conducted in the construction yard. Guest lectures shall be organized to impart knowledge on the latest construction technology and materials.

1. Site visit for Visual analysis of under-construction structure to understand different parts of building
2. Interaction with contractors for understanding of local terminology used.
3. Model making of design permutations possible with the use of bricks, stone & concrete through the knowledge gained from site visit.
4. Workshop on construction of various types of bonds & arches.
