Objetivos y descripción del curso:

The principal objective of this course is to prepare students for advanced study of culture, linguistics, and
literature in the Spanish language. Although we will continue to develop listening and speaking skills on a daily
basis in class, the course focuses principally on improving students’ reading and writing skills. To that end, we
will be reading several different literary and cultural texts together, which will improve students’ ability to
analyze and think critically. These texts will also serve as springboards for improving usage of Spanish structures
and vocabulary, providing students with a greater range of lexical choices as well as with greater ease of written
expression. Based on these activities, students will also write three different types of essays, one of which will be
a research paper. We will do some work (peer editing, brainstorming, proofreading) on these compositions in
class, but the majority of the writing will be done outside of class. By the end of the course, the students will be
able to write in several different styles with reasonable confidence, will be able to manage dictionary and
translations; will be familiar with the MLA Bibliography, will be able to comprehend and analyze many types of
written texts, and will have achieved greater proficiency in all four skills.
The prerequisite for enrolling in Spanish 3303 is satisfactory completion of Spanish 3300 (with a C or
better), placement by examination, or permission of chair. This course is required for the major and a
recommended elective for the minor. Students may not take this course having received a D or F grade in the
previous course in sequence (3300).
This course requires the use of Blackboard for assignment and course communication. Students who do
not have internet access will need to plan to use the Language Learning Center (Irby 209) for these course
functions.

A few important notes:

• All classes will be conducted in Spanish. Students must avoid using English except where absolutely necessary.
Students are also responsible for making sure they understand the professor, class activities, and book
explanations. Even though we will be working completely in Spanish, do not hesitate to ask for help or
explanations in English if you are confused.
• Don’t forget that your instructor is always willing and available to meet with you to answer your questions as
well as to help you focus and improve your study habits and writing, speaking, listening, and reading skills. You
can contact me in class or during office hours; you can also set up an appointment if the office hours aren’t
convenient: I check my email several times a day. 

• STATEMENT OF ACADEMIC MISCONDUCT: Absolutely no cheating or dishonesty will be tolerated

in this class and any confirmed cases of cheating will result in a failing grade for the activity in question; if
another confirmed case occurs, the student will be dropped or failed (WF or F) from the class. This is true
whether the cheating (plagiarism) was intentional or not. The student is responsible for documenting appropriately
all sources according to the MLA style. If in doubt, do ask!
Although discussion and cooperation among students is highly encouraged, it is expected that any
evaluated exercises (such as VHL) must be done without the assistance of others (whether they are members of
the class or not), unless by prior permission of the instructor. Any work which quotes or uses the work of another
person (published or not) should indicate its sources in the appropriate manner. This includes any use of an online
translator or dictionary for more than isolated words.

1) Asistencia y participación.
Es necesario asistir a la clase y ser participante activo/a en las actividades. Se anticipa un cierto
nivel de frustración por parte del estudiante con la expresión oral; pero este miedo no debe prevenir que
el alumno participe o que venga a la clase. Hay que entender y aceptar que habrá errores en la lengua
hablada, particularmente al principio del curso; lo importante es aprender de los errores. No hay que
temer la crítica de los compañeros porque nadie va a hablar perfectamente; se ayudarán mutuamente a
expresarse mejor a lo largo del curso. Además, uno de los requisitos más importantes es que cada
estudiante se familiarice con la materia ANTES de repasarla en clase.
Si un/a estudiante tiene que faltar a clase, hay que ponerse en contacto con la profesora tan
pronto como sea posible. Sólo se le perdonarán las ausencias con el permiso de la profesora, en casos
graves de enfermedad o de crisis personal. Sin embargo, cualquier estudiante que tenga un total de 4
ausencias no excusadas o un total de 6 ausencias (combinando las excusadas y las no excusadas)
tendrá que dejar la clase forzadamente (F o W). Obviamente, cualquier ausencia no excusada también
afectará la nota de la participación, que se le da a cada estudiante por cada clase del curso según el
esquema siguiente:

2) Los ejercicios escritos se componen de las tareas escritas que se entregan según el programa (véase
abajo). Esta tarea puede ser los ejercicios de gramática del texto o una actividad de preparación de
lectura, según indican el programa y la profesora. Se corrigen muchas de las actividades en clase y los
alumnos tienen la responsabilidad de corregirlas por su propia cuenta en clase o en casa. Otra parte de
los ejercicios escritos es el diario (learning journal). Para este curso, el diario se compone es el diario
semanal que se entrega de forma electrónica todos los fines de semana (ver instrucciones detalladas en
Blackboard [BB]; se contarán las 10 notas más altas).

3) Las tres composiciones tendrán por lo menos dos versiones (un borrador y una versión final) y varias
actividades de preparación. Para cada ensayo, se repasarán las instrucciones en clase, pero se encuentran
también en BB, como siempre, igual que los esquemas de evaluación. Cada composición tendrá un
enfoque distinto y unos elementos requeridos que corresponden con el texto, las estructuras y el
vocabulario que estudiamos en el momento. Los estudiantes tendrán que revisar cuidadosamente sus
composiciones usando los comentarios y la guía de redacción (que se encuentran en BB). Todas las
versiones tienen valor en la calculación de la nota final para cada composición.

4) Los dos exámenes se basarán en lo que se ha estudiado en cada unidad, incluyendo las estructuras
de gramática, las lecturas y las técnicas de escribir. El formato puede incluir actividades de selección
limitada, de traducción, de corrección de pasajes escritos, tanto como varias actividades de respuesta
libre que prueban la proficiencia (escuchar, leer, escribir).
5) También habrá tres evaluaciones orales que corresponden a los temas de las composiciones: una
presentación al estilo de debate, un informe oral y una declamación de una obra creativa. En BB se
encontrará información detallada sobre estas presentaciones y su método de evaluación.

6) El examen final se enfocará mayormente en la tercera unidad aunque puede incluir unas actividades
comprensivas según se indica en clase antes del examen.
