lesson Note to the Teacher:

 Divide the class into four groups.
 Provide each group with strips of paper
 Out of the strips of paper, let each group answer the
given task in factoring polynomial functions and
express it in factored form.
Group 1
y = x3 + 2x2 – x - 2
(expected answer: y = (x+1)(x-1)(x+2) )
Group 2
y = x3 – 2x2 – x +2
(expected answer: (x+1)(x-1)(x-2) )
Group 3:
f(x) = x3 + x2 – 4x - 4
(expected answer: (x+1)(x-2)(x+2) )
Group 4:
f(x) = x3 - x2 – 4x + 4
(expected answer: (x+1)(x-2)(x+2) )

Process all group outputs by letting them share their

work with the other groups.

B. Establishing a
purpose for the lesson Answer the following questions:
1. How did you find the activity?
(expectedanswer: easy)
2. What did you use in finding the factors ?
(expected answer: synthetic division and factoring
techniques)

Now, that you have already the concepts and knowledge

how to factor polynomial functions and that it can be
expressed in factored form, then we will find its x-
intercept and y-intercept that will be used in the next
lesson.

C. Presenting examples
of the new lesson Finding the x-intercept and the y-intercept of
polynomial functions.

1. Groups 1, 2, 3, 4, with your polynomial

functions in our previous activity in factored, do
you have any idea how to find the x-intercept
and the y-intercept?
(expected answer: maybe yes: maybe no)

(Pause for a while and let them refer to their

walking dictionary for the definition of x-
intercept and y-intercept)
Ask for a volunteer to read the definition and process
his/her answer.

D. Discussing new
concepts and The teacher discussess that if the polynomial
practicing new skills function is in its standard form, then it will lead to the
#1 idea that equating each factor to 0 and solving for the
value of x, that value of x will become the x-intercept.
Substituting x = 0 to a polynomial function will give
the value of the y-inercept.

E. Discussing new
concepts and To recall the relationship between factors and x-
practicing new skills intercepts, consider setting y = 0 and use the factored
#2 form below:
y = x2 + 3x + 2
y = (x+2)(x+1) factor completely
0 = (x+2)(x+1) equate y to 0

x+2=0 or x+1=0 equate each factor to 0

x = - 2; x = - 1 to determine x
Therefore, the x-intercepts are – 2 and – 1.

Finding the y-intercept, just set x = 0 in the polynomial

above. That is
y = x2 + 3x + 2
y = 02 + 3(0) + 2
y=2
Therefore, the y-intercept is 2.

F. Developing Mastery ACTIVITY: think-pair share

Find the x-intercepts and the y-intercept of the following
polynomial functions:
1. y = x2 – 3x - 10
(expected answer: x-intercepts: - 2 and 5; y-intercept: - 10)
2. y = 2x3 – 5x2 – 23x – 10
(expected answer: x-intercepts: - 2,5,- ½ ; y-intercept: - 10)
3. y = 3x3 – 2x2 – 48x + 32
(expected answer: x-intercepts: 4, - 4,2/3 ; y-intercept: 32)

(Have a pair to present their work and process their

responses by letting them explain their work and how they
do it. See to it that the rest of the groups got it also.)

Content: Finding the X-intercepts and the Y-intercept

DISCUSSIONS:

Finding all the factors of polynomial functions and expressing a

polynomial function in its standard form will lead to finding its x-intercepts and
these x-intercepts are very important in sketching the graph of the polynomial
functions. These are the x-values when y = 0, thus, the point(s) where the graph
intersects the x-axis can be determined.

While that of the constant term of polynomial functions will

automatically become the y-intercept.

Remember, these intercepts are used to determine the points where the
graph intersects or touches the x-axis and the y-axis. But these points are not
sufficient to draw the graph of the polynomial functions.
