Week 1
I. OBJECTIVES
Knowledge: Differentiates x-intercept from y-intercept.
Skill: Identifies the x-intercept and the y-intercept of
polynomial functions.
Attitude: Observes accuracy in identifying the x-intercept and
the y-intercept of polynomial functions.

B. Establishing a
purpose for the lesson Answer the following questions:
1. How did you find the activity?
(expectedanswer: easy)
2. What did you use in finding the factors ?
(expected answer: synthetic division and factoring
techniques)
C. Presenting examples
of the new lesson Finding the x-intercept and the y-intercept of
polynomial functions.
D. Discussing new
concepts and The teacher discussess that if the polynomial
practicing new skills function is in its standard form, then it will lead to the
#1 idea that equating each factor to 0 and solving for the
value of x, that value of x will become the x-intercept.
Substituting x = 0 to a polynomial function will give
the value of the y-inercept.
E. Discussing new
concepts and To recall the relationship between factors and x-
practicing new skills intercepts, consider setting y = 0 and use the factored
#2 form below:
y = x2 + 3x + 2
y = (x+2)(x+1) factor completely
0 = (x+2)(x+1) equate y to 0
G. Finding practical
applications of If you will draw the graph of y = x(x + 2), how will you

DISCUSSIONS:
Remember, these intercepts are used to determine the points where the
graph intersects or touches the x-axis and the y-axis. But these points are not
sufficient to draw the graph of the polynomial functions.
SUPPLEMENTARY ACTIVITIES
Note: The activities included here will be used only when needed.
1. y = (2x+3)(x-1)(x-4)
2. y = - x4 – 5x3 + 3x2 + 13x - 10
