P4: Describe the role of four different complementary therapies in relation to

orthodox treatments.

Acupuncture
According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, qi (energy) flows through the body via 14
primary meridians or channels.

As there is no scientific evidence for chi, which is what the basis of acupuncture is based
on, it isn’t really scientifically backed. However hospitals can prescribe people
acupuncture if they feel it is required, so therefore it must have some purpose. The
scientific benefit of acupuncture is doubtable as there is none or very scientific evidence
saying that it works.

Despite a lack of scientifically backing, people are still being referred to acupuncturists
by doctors and GPs due to its versatility in the array of range that acupuncture can treat.
It is used for giving up smoking, pain relief, stopping of nausea and vomiting, treating
drug addiction, treating emotional disorders and stress relief.

A is one complementary therapy which people believe can solve problems as well as
have a positive influence on their mood.

Aromatherapy
Aromatherapy involves using oil candles, plant extracts and various smells to make
someone feel better whilst in a relaxed and calm environment. Treatments have been
proven to work for treating certain conditions. But treating conditions only works to
some extent.

Scientific trials have found that aromatherapy can raise or lower blood pressure. Also,
certain oils are used for their antibacterial, anti-fungal or anti-inflammatory properties.
Aromatherapy is something that someone would be referred to in order to make them
feel better rather than to improve their health. There is no cure to illnesses such as
arthritis or cancer, so someone with that may use this treatment as complementary
therapies are known as a best hope for people with those sorts of illnesses.

Chiropracting
Apparently, according to the people who practice chiropracting, this accelerates the
body’s healing system which heals bruises cuts and bones and will then be able to get on
with the task of improving your health. This treatment is known as 'adjustment' or
'manipulation'. This sounds like stretching the truth or a bit farfetched. Its job in
treating illness is to provide a massage and make people feel better. The placebo, might
be what makes it work.

Juice therapy
Juice therapy is used to get the full nutritional benefits of fruit and vegetables which can
only be done once in juice form. Such a treatment has no side effects making it a good
choice for someone who wishes to opt for this treatment. Lime juice was found to be a
good cure for scurvy hundreds of years ago but we have gone a long way in terms of
medical advancement.

According to the NHS, eating healthily reduces the risk of heart disease, cancer and
stroke.

All juice therapy does is provide a good supply of vitamins and minerals. However it
lacks the fibre, fat, and protein needed to maintain energy and preserve optimum
health. Also, it’s not a huge source of energy or carbohydrates in comparison to other
foods so it cannot be a replacement for breakfast. For these reasons, it will be very
unlikely for a doctors and GPs to refer someone to this therapy, which is more of a
supplement than a treatment.

P5: Describe the role of four different complementary therapies in relation to

health and wellbeing.

Acupuncture
Despite the lack of scientific evidence, acupuncture still has a considerable effect on
someone’s health and wellbeing. Numerous scientific studies/trials, say that
acupuncture works. For instance, inserting needles into the skin blocks pain signals. The
best thing about acupuncture is that there are no side effects making it not dangerous.
So it can be taken without conflicting with existing medication.

Also, it’s an effective painkiller without using drugs.

The placebo is effective at making people feel better, and feel capable of giving up
smoking.

The treatment has stood the test of time and has been around for thousands of years so
it must be doing something right.

As with all complementary therapies, there is a great limit to how much they can do in
comparison with modern therapies. As it does not detect diseases, it would only be
prescribed to someone who has had a successful diagnosis.

Aromatherapy
According to the people in the industry, “one of the reasons that aromatherapy has been
so hugely successful is because it uses a holistic approach, whereby the aromatherapist
takes into account a person’s medical history, emotional condition, general health and
lifestyle before planning a course of treatment. The whole person is treated - not just the
symptoms of an illness - and this is in direct opposition to the modern trend of just treating
the presented condition”.

It is good at raising and lowering the blood pressure of someone. According to Science
Daily, it does not make people well. For this reason, it can’t really be reffered to
someone by a medical expert with weight.

Chiropracting
Chiropracting is a treatment which is designed to give someone spinal alignment. Such a
treatment is used to massage someone. I thought this treatment was rubbish, however,
when I read the reviews at ciao regarding chiropracting I started to understand what
the fuss was about. According to people who have back pain, this treatment cures them
of it unlike painkillers. In this treatment, the body is aligned when the person lies down.
Even their legs are straight and aligned. This treatment deals with bones, tendons,
muscles and joints. According to people “You should find your joints feel like they’ve
been released, you may have a little discomfort, particularly if you’ve had your neck
done but it shouldn’t be painful”. The person puts their hands on the patient to cause a
click which is not painful. For some people, it prevents the need for agonising pain and
being in hospital getting surgery. It does not work for everyone.

Juice therapy
Juice therapy is effective at only giving people vitamins and nutrients. Lime juice was,
for example, found to be an effective cure for scurvy in the sixteenth century and this
saved thousands of sailors' lives on their long voyages around the world. In more recent
times, scientists have identified the nutritional and biochemical properties of freshly-
prepared fruit and vegetable juices which account for their use in helping treat so many
health problems.

Nowadays juice therapy isn’t used, but scientists already know the importance of
natural ingredients in their medicinal products. Scientists are already searching the
rainforests for ingredients, and undiscovered plants to make medicine with. Natural
ingredients have already found cures for various illnesses.
