A Semi-Detailed Lesson Plan in English III

Remedial Instruction
I. Objectives
At the end of the lesson the student is expected to:
give the antonyms of the given words
determine the elements of poetry in the poem, and
explain the meaning of the poem

II. Subject Matter


Focus: Elements of poetry
Springboard: If by Rudyard Kipling
Materials: handout

III. Procedure
A. Pre-reading
Vocabulary Development

1. Give the antonyms of the following words:


losing
trust
hated
wise
foes
unforgiving

Motivation
1. The teacher will ask the student to think of a song with the word “If.”
If the student will able to think of a lyric the teacher will ask what it signals. If the
student will not be able to give the teacher will be the one to give.

Some lines of songs with “if” include the following:


If I could reach you, I wish I could ...
If a picture paints a thousand words ...
If we both decide to try and make it one more time...

2. The teacher will explain the meaning of the word “if”.

B. During-reading
1. The teacher reads the poem If by Rudyard Kipling orally.
2. The student will read it afterwards.

C. Post-reading
The teacher will ask the ff. questions for comprehension response:
1. Who is talking in the poem?
2. To whom is the poem addressed?
3. What pieces of advice are given?
4. What qualities of a man are mentioned in the poem? Cite lines to prove your
answer.
5. Why are these qualities important in a man?

The teacher will discuss the poem in connection with the basic elements of poetry.

IV. Evaluation
Comprehension practice

1. Check all the statements that are true, according to the poem.

a.You should always be calm.

b. You should neither lie nor hate.

c. Always look your best and speak in a very wise manner.

d. It’s all right to dream but act on reality.

e. Realize that you will have both good and bad in your life.

f. Even if someone hurts you badly, get up and start over.

g. When you feel stressed, take some time off.

h. Adopt the ways of people in higher social positions.

i. If you follow these rules, you’ll be a success in life.

2. Check all the statements that are true by inference.

j. If you lost all your money in a stock market crash, you would remain calm.

k. If people hated you, you would hate them in return.

l. If you faced triumph or if you faced disaster, you would deal with the situation.

m. If you lost everything, you could never start over.

n.If you lost your strength, you would regain it.
