1. SCOPE

1.1 Purpose of This Specification

This specification defines the ordering, supplying requirements and properties for
polychloroprene rubber with a nominal hardness ranges as given below and a service
temperature range as stated in section 7.3. The types of polychloroprene rubber covered by
this document are:

– Type A: General purpose (45, 55, 65, 75 and 85 IRHD)

– Type B: Ballistic grade (65 IRHD)

First-tier suppliers may procure elastomers from any sub-tier supplier. Sub-tier suppliers
shall be subject to the first-tier supplier, quality and procurement system requirements.

The first-tier supplier shall ensure that the material property requirements of this
specification are met.

This document previously invoked only general purpose polychloroprene rubber. If not
specified, use this type by default.

These materials are qualified for the following purposes:

1.1.1 Seals

Materials qualified to this specification may be used in combination with reinforcing fabrics
qualified to ABR 9-0142 or an equivalent Airbus material specification (AIMS) for seal
designs, which shall be embodied in an Airbus standard (ABS), drawing or ‘J’ section. This
specification does not cover the design requirements of the complete seals.

1.1.2 Miscellaneous

Sundry fittings to prevent general wear, damage or movement, for example grommets, sheet,
snubbers and other un-reinforced rubber items.

1.1.3 Ballistic

Type B material may be used as a binder for ballistic barriers and mats. Where the ballistic
properties are paramount ABR 4-0106 type B classification is to be used. As a necessity this
material has significantly differing material properties from general purpose polychloroprene
rubber type A in order to achieve the ballistic performance.

1.2 Design Responsibility

The designer must establish how the design is affected by the following:

– Fit of seals to the component and assembly (a trial fit is essential to account for seal
profile, and compound stiffness, compressibility and permanent set)
– Fire resistance requirements of the final assembly
– Any non mechanical property requirements, for example electrical conductivity
– The impact protection of ballistic barrier and mat assemblies must be tested when exposed
to all anticipated environmental conditions including fluids and temperatures

Where compatibility is required with any substances not covered in this specification, the
designer shall inform the Materials and Processes Department at Airbus in the UK so that the
suitability of the rubber compound can be established.

To reference materials on drawings use the coding system outlined in section 8.1.
