Poster Subject:
Failure of Weld Joints in Aged Hot Collectors of Hydrogen Reformer -
Surprises, Challenges and Lessons Learnt
Abstract:
The poster presents details of a unique case of weld joint failure in hydrogen reformer
hot collector. Joint was a 1-1/2" thk dissimilar weld joint between Incoloy 800H and
Metaltek 20-32Nb (~ASTM CT15C). Cracks were revealed through external DPT and
RT confirmed depth upto 90% of the joint thickness. During grinding, crack propagation
and branching posed an extreme challenge. A stabilization heat treatment (980degC)
followed by crack grinding and welding repairs was successful. After one year of
service; similar crack were observed again and repaired to operate the equipment for
one more year before component replacement. Component replacement posed welding
challenges to make a joint between aged Metaltek 20-32Nb and similar fresh material.
This time stabilization heat treatment was augmented with 500degC preheat helped.
Apart from being SAIT Welding Engineering Technology student; SIDDIQUE has 7
years of experience working as a Mechanical Engineer at Ammonia Section of Fauji
Fertilizer Bin Qasim Limited.
