Preparation Execution Completion

• Server stands behind the baseline • The ball is tossed up with the • Weight is transferred forward onto the
opposite hand in line with the court and move into a defensive position
• Straight arms point towards target with serving hand, little spin and less
hitting hand behind the ball than 1m high • Arm follows through in the direction of
the target; thumb brushing quadriceps
• Weight on the back foot ready to be • Opposite foot forward when contact on the same side as serving arm
transferred onto front foot upon contact is made with the ball
• Ball has a flat trajectory and no
• Step is towards the target with the • Contact with the ball is above the spin(floating)
opposite foot head in line with the serving arm
• Ball clears the net no higher than the top
• Hitting arm is drawn straight back • Contact with the ball is with an open of the antennae
behind the head with elbow flexion hand

routine
• Ball is contacted with an open hand • Arm follows through in the direction of
• Ball is tossed above the head with one the target with thumb brushing
or two hands in line with the serving • Wrist snaps to impart top spin quadriceps on the same side as serving
hand arm
• Approach routine begins, including full • Ball has top spin and dips as it crosses
jump with take-off from two feet (as per the net
the spike approach)
• Ball lands in last metre and a half of
• Hitting arm is drawn straight back court
behind the head with elbow flexion

3. COMBINED JUMP-FLOAT SERVE

Preparation Execution Completion

• Position behind the baseline at • Ball is contacted with an open hand • Weight is transferred forward onto the
appropriate distance to allow approach court and move is into a defensive
routine position
• Approach routine begins, including full • Arm follows through in the direction of

4. FOREARM PASS: FREE BALL

Preparation Execution Completion

• Move is to get the ball in line with the • Arms should be straight and in the • Arms follow through no higher than
midline of the body and to face the midline with a flat platform parallel to the court
target
• Body weight is moving up and • Ball travels on a parabola between the
• Balanced position with weight on the forward as is all of body movement contact point and the setter
balls of the feet and outside foot forward
• Body goes from a low position to a
• Shoulders directed towards the target high position in a forward flowing
with arms forming a stable triangle movement
• As ball approaches, position is lowered • All contact is on the forearm (above
with greater knee bend ‘watch strap’) with elbows fully
extended

5. FOREARM PASS: SERVE RECEPTION

Preparation Execution Completion

• Move is to get the ball in line with the • Arms should be straight with a flat • Arms follow through no higher than
midline of the body and to face the platform parallel to the court
target or execute lateral pass if
receiving a jump serve • Body weight is moving up and • Ball travels on a parabola between the
forward as is all of body movement contact point and the setter
• Balanced position with weight on the
balls of the feet and outside foot forward • Body goes from a low position to a • Movement is into the team-attack
high position in a forward flowing position
• Shoulders are directed towards the movement
target with arms forming a stable
triangle • All contact is on forearm (above
‘watch strap’) with elbows fully
• As ball approaches position is lowered extended. Note: Jump serve is
with greater knee bend received with very little arm
movement to cushion the ball on
impact

6. FOREARM PASS: SPIKE RECEPTION

Preparation Execution Completion

• A balanced ready position is assumed • Contact is such that the arms • Ball is controlled on own-side of the
to receive a spike almost ‘give’ on contact to take court to form an attack
power out of the ball
• Arms are relaxed • Ball is kept high, in the middle of the
• Contact is on forearms with elbows court and towards the attack line
• Stance is wide and low extended

• Weight moves onto the balls of the feet • Arms ‘break’ at the elbows in the ‘J’ position
with shoulders forward in readiness to shape to control the impact of the
move into position ball

7. FRONT SET

Preparation Execution Completion

• Body is balanced with foot closest to the • Hips and shoulders are facing the • Arms point in direction of the target
net slightly in front target
• Thumbs and forefingers also point in the
• Knees and hips are flexed • Base is stable and knees flex on direction of the target
contact
• Hands are positioned slightly in front • Ball is released into a parabolic flight
and above the head, forming a triangle • Ball is cushioned with all fingers with no spin
and thumbs of both hands
• Elbows are at 900 with thumbs pointing • Next movement is into defensive
to the floor • Elbows flex upon contact followed position
by extension to 180° leading to
release

8. SPIKE

Preparation Execution Completion

• Spike approach begins on or behind the • Lead is with elbow first, then high • Two-foot landing is controlled with
attack line contact with open hand on the ball, flexion of knees to absorb impact
snapping the wrist on contact
• Spike approach footwork is R - L - • Landing is in the same place as take-off
together (opposite for left-hander) • Contact is made at maximum height
approx 50cm in front of the body • Ball crosses the net in a downward path
• Knee bend is deep with arms swinging and in line with the hitting shoulder with speed
back parallel to the court
• Ball avoids the opposition block and
• Two-foot take-off is vertical and spike-defensive players
controlled
• Arms swing forwards and upwards to
get maximum height in the jump
• Arms assume ‘bow and arrow’ position
with hitting arm pulled back behind the
body in a ‘bow’ position and non-hitting
arm pointing to the ball

9. BLOCK

Preparation Execution Completion

• Feet are shoulder-width apart and arm- • Knees bend no more than 90º • Two-foot landing is controlled with
length off the net flexion of the knees to absorb impact
• Knees are extended fully to jump and without any net touches
• Hands are in front of the body, at vertically
shoulder height and facing the • Ready position is resumed
opposition • No gap is left between arms and net
(maximum penetration)
• Fingers are spread
• Arms are kept straight and strong
• Movement along the net is sideways reaching over the net
and controlled
• Thumbs should be high, fingers
spread and hands close together to
avoid ball going through the middle
of both hands

head than in the front set • Ball is cushioned with all fingers with no spin
and thumbs of both hands
