Problem 2.2
A spring-mass system, k1 and m, has a natural frequency of f1 . If a second spring k2 is added in
series with the first spring, the natural frequency is lowered to 12 f1 . Determine k2 in terms of k1 .

Solution

Below is the initial spring-mass system with spring stiffness k1 and mass m.

The natural frequency for this system is

r
1 k1
f1 = .
2π m
Now we add a second spring to the system in series.

These two springs in series can be replaced by one effective spring stiffness,
1 k1 k2
keff = 1 1 = .
k1 + k2
k1 + k2

4 k1 + k2
k1 + k2 = 4k2
k1 = 3k2 .

Therefore,
1
k2 = k1 .
