NZ SAFE’s FREE LAB ANIMALS CAMPAIGN

SHE’S NO LAB TOOL...

By their very nature beagles are smart, friendly and

trusting. Sadly, researchers exploit these traits by using
beagles as mere ‘tools’ for animal research.

Beagles have become the breed of choice for a new

research company operating in New Zealand. This
company is contracted to undertake experiments on
live animals for national and international clients.

Valley Animal Research Centre (VARC), which has

facilities in the Hawke’s Bay and Manawatu, is the
first in the Southern Hemisphere to use beagles for
toxicity research. SAFE understands VARC also breeds
horses and cats for research.

LABORATORY ANIMALS NEED YOUR HELP

VICTIMS OF SCIENCE Toxicity testing usually involves the administration of a drug to a
group of animals to gauge its effect. Tests may last weeks, months
or even years and can cause considerable discomfort, pain and even
death. Toxicity testing can induce vomiting, weight loss, excessive
salivation and convulsions and may result in organ or tissue damage.

Over 300,000 animals are used in experiments in New Zealand annually.

SAFE IN ACTION The amount of research carried out on cats and dogs in New Zealand
has doubled since 2001. A SAFE investigation in 2007 revealed VARC
was breeding and researching on beagles and other companion
animals. VARC is one of the largest companion animal testing
companies in the Southern Hemisphere. To prevent any further cats
and dogs from being used in research experiments SAFE is calling
on the Government to prohibit their use as laboratory animals.
In 2008, SAFE challenges VARC by marching against animal research.

VIVISECTION IN NZ Of the 300,000 animals used in experiments each year in New Zealand,
half are killed. Thousands more endure what the government describes
as “severe” or “very severe” levels of suffering. Most animal research
in New Zealand is carried out for commercial purposes aimed at
increasing profits of various industries. Despite the intention of the
Animal Welfare Act 1999 to protect animals the Act permits cruel,
invasive and even lethal experiments to be conducted on animals.
