Historical Background
The plan called for the troops of 5th Indian Brigade to advance northwards from their positions to Damascus through
Mezze. Mezzeh was a large village on a junction with the Beirut to Damascus road, some three miles west of Damascus 9 x4
itself. Meanwhile, the Free French forces would advance along the Kissoué - Damascus road to capture Kadim as a
preliminary to entering the Syrian capital.
Late on 18 June, the Indian troops set out and skirmished their way north. They reached Mezzeh and after an hour of 10 x9
fierce hand-to-hand fighting, Mezzeh was captured. However, they had lost their supplies and anti-tank weapons in an
ambush. Furthermore, the planned advance by the Free French to Kadim had been delayed so the Vichy forces were
able to focus on Mezze. By nightfall on 19 June, the Allied position at Mezzeh was desperate. The Punjab's had been
surrounded and were being pummeled by tanks. 11 x1
A relief force was organized on the morning of the 20th comprised of two Punjab, two French Marine and one artillery
company but they were beaten back by the tanks. A Free French attack on Kadim also failed that day. The beleaguered
Punjab's decided to ask for a truce, but their white flag was misread and instead they were taken prisoners.
On the morning of the 21st a second attack on Kadim succeed with the help of Australian artillery. An Australian relief 12 x3
force also broke through to Mezze but found only the dead. By noon on 21 June, the Allied forces were in Damascus and
the Vichy forces were retreating west along the Beirut road.
