Architecture and design are closely related; the main difference between them is really about
which way we face.

● Architecture faces towards strategy, structure and purpose, towards the abstract.
● Design faces towards implementation and practice, towards the concrete.

Architect is the person who does and practicing architecture. While in the
practice of architecture, designing is the dominant activity that an
architect will do.

Architect designs spaces that will directly be used by other people.

Because of that, design principle is very important and has a strong relation
with architect. Principles and theories of design general-wise will also be
used in designing architecture.

Architect must possess the design’s ‘thinking process’.

Why the relation between design and architect
becomes very important?
Because in design we should consider 3 things :

Utilitas : Concerned with functionality. A

building has to meet the needs of the person
owning or leasing it, or it is worthless

Firmitas : a new building needs to be

structurally sound, designed to withstand the
test of time and built in accordance with the
local building codes and ordinances.

Venustas : concerned with the aesthetic

beauty of a building.
