Grammatical mood is a characteristic of a verb that is used to describe the attitude of the
speaker. The indicative mood is used to express what the speaker believes to be fact,
objective reality, and certainty. The subjunctive mood is used to make statements that express
subjectivity and uncertainty.
Grammatical tense refers to when an action takes place. Just as the present and the past are
tenses within the indicative mood, the present and past are also tenses within the subjunctive
mood. When speaking about subjectivity in the past, the imperfect subjunctive (pretérito
imperfecto de subjuntivo) is used.
Let’s look at an example of the subjunctive in both the present tense and past tense.
