I.

Objectives
At the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
a. Identify the authors purpose.
b. Apply persuasive and informative text in a role play.

II. Subject Matter


a. Topic: Determining the Authors Purpose (Persuasive and Informative text)
CCSS.ELA. Literacy.RI.6.6
b. Reference: English for Academic and Professional Purpose pages 19-22
c. Materials: photocopies, cartolina, pictures, and colored strips.

III. Procedure
1. Preliminary Activities
a. Review
 What was our lesson yesterday?
 What is expressive text?
b. Motivation
 Group the students into two and introduce the game “4 Pics 1 Word”
Direction: Each group will pick their leader and they will identify what the picture
represents, its example and meaning.
2. Developmental Activities
a. Presentation
 Have you watch a television?
 Those pictures are related to our topic today which is Authors Purposes.
We have:
1. Persuasive text
2. Informative text
 Persuasive text
 Type of writing that the author used to convince the reader to make you change
your mind on something or to make you change do a certain action.
E.g. Advertisement, campaign speeches, persuasive letters or note.
 Informative text
 To inform is to enlighten the reader or provide the reader with information about a
topic.
E.g. Expository essays or topic, instructions or directions, encyclopedia or other text.
b. Activity
 With their corresponding group. Each group will pick 5 representatives to answer
on the board.
Direction: Identify the Authors Purpose. Write PT if Persuasive text and IT if Informative text.

c. Analysis
 Now that you know the author’s purposes, how would you feel that you have
finished the task correctly?
 Why do you think it is necessary for us to know the author’s purposes?
d. Abstraction
 Given the same task what would you do when you encounter the same activity?
 If you were an author, what will you choose to write? informative or persuasive
text? And why?
e. Application (Role Play)
 Form two groups. Each groups will pick 1 paper inside the box.
Direction: Each paper has a task to be perform. Given 5 minutes to collaborate with their
group and 5 minutes to perform.
*Task List*
 Convince a teacher to take a groufie with a wacky pose.
 Persuade the audience to buy biscuits in your store. (advertise)
 Inform the audience about your favorite pet
 Pick two brands of shampoo, ask your groupmate to choose between the two brands.
Tally the result and inform your classmates.

IV. Evaluation
Direction: Determine the author’s purpose of each number. Choose persuasive or
informative text.
1. A pamphlet explaining how an unborn child may be affected when a pregnant mother
smokes.
2. The terms of use for Facebook, a social networking site.
3. A letter to a teen girl from her imprisoned father giving her reasons why she should go to
college.
4. A politician’s speech about how houses should be provided to families who cannot.
5. Direction to the mall written by a friend or relative.
V. Assignment
Research the author’s tone and mood for writing.
