12 RAMADAN RELIEF WF-AID has responded to the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Yemen and I am so grateful for the
support of you, our community, for this appeal. It is thanks to you that we have been able to provide
14 ECONOMIC UPLIFTMENT food to over 12,000 people. There is still a long way to go but together, we are making a difference.
AND EMPOWERMENT
We have also continued our work with Syrian widows and orphans, all of whom have been
displaced due to the ongoing conflict in Syria. We have provided them with food, educational
15 WINTER APPEAL supplies and medical support, to help them in their bid to recover from the trauma they have
experienced and rebuild their lives. The stories we hear from them are heartbreaking but knowing

OVERVIEW OF WF-AID

WF-AID is the humanitarian arm of The World Federation, who

aim to provide practical and sustainable solutions for the different
challenges faced by men, women and children around the world.

Our vision is to create a world free from suffering, where all human
beings have access to basic human rights, like clean water, food,
shelter, sanitation, education and health.

We work with our Regional Federations and partners on the ground

to provide this support to vulnerable communities around the world.

In line with our philosophy to serve humanity, we continuously strive

to build capacity amongst the communities we work with and support
international development, to encourage sustainable livelihoods,
empower individuals and restore their sense of dignity.

ALI ASGHAR
WATER APPEAL
Today, 1 in 9 people lack access to safe
water and 1 in 3 people lack access to a
toilet. This results in a child dying every
2 minutes from contracting waterborne
diseases.
For over ten years, the Ali Asghar Water
Appeal has strived to provide better
access to water for many water scarce
communities. This year, we worked on
building long-term sustainable water
solutions across Pakistan, Bangladesh
and Kenya to provide communities with
access to clean and safe water.
Thanks to your support we secured
funding for long term projects, which will
reach thousands of people.
IMAM HASAN SUBMERSIBLE WELL
We are currently supporting a Shia
community in Pakistan by building a
submersible well near to the mosque,
which will benefit the visitors to the
mosque on a regular basis with a
steep rise during Muharram and Shahr
Ramadan.
 WATER TURBINE
Over 30,000 people in Pakistan
now have access to water from
water-scarce locations through
engine run facilities. This includes
people from local schools and
hospitals.
BOREHOLE WELLS
Borehole Wells are connected
to extensive storage tanks and
provide people in Kenya with
access to a reliable source of
water from deep underground and
serve a district of 60,000 people.
SOLAR POWERED WELLS
The Solar Powered Wells we built
provide 25,000 refugee families
in Bangladesh with access to
clean and safe water for drinking,
cooking, cleaning and growing
crops.
MOSQUE WASHROOMS
We constructed Mosque
Washrooms, whose wudhu
facilities benefit over 80 families a
day as well as those who regularly
visit the mosque. 300 children
from a nearby school also benefit.

SYRIA
Throughout the year, we provide support to the displaced people of
Syria as a result of your donations to our Lady Zaynab Helping Hands
Syria appeal.
FOOD
We provide families with nutritious and long lasting food packs which
include foods such as lentils, cooking oil, rice and sugar.
ORPHAN AND WIDOW SUPPORT
Many people have lost their family members, their homes and their
belongings due to the conflict. We then provide them with furniture, and
with heaters in the winter. The orphans have seen so much suffering at
their young ages, and some have known no other life than living with
war. We have provided some of them with new clothes, toys and Eid gifts
to put a smile on their faces.
EDUCATION
Some of the young children have never had the opportunity to go to
school. Your donations mean we can pay their tuition fees, helping them

to receive an education. We also supply school supplies, from desks and
chairs to notebooks and backpacks, to make their school experience the
best we can. In order to give them the same sort of experiences as other
children, we also hold extracurricular activities, such as swimming, which
all the children enjoy.
MEDICAL
The violence, displacement, dire living conditions and lack of access
to food have had a devastating impact on people’s health, leaving
them in urgent need of medical attention. Through your donations, we
have been providing urgent medical care for thousands of people, who
haven’t had access to adequate healthcare for years. Your donations
fund life-changing medical surgeries including caesarean deliveries, eye
operations, nasal repairs and infection control procedures.
You have also funded essential equipment such as hearing aids
and wheelchairs. Two young boys who received medical treatment
due to your donations are Ahmed (13) and Muhammad (16), who
stepped on an unexploded mine last year. The explosion changed
their lives in an instant, causing the loss of their limbs. Both boys have
undergone multiple surgeries and after care treatment, including regular
physiotherapy sessions. Alhamdulillah, they are now able to eat and
drink by themselves.
YOUR IMPACT
In 2018, we reached over 9,200 Syrian people.

• We distributed over 2,006 food packs.

• We gave 1,470 clothes, gifts and household

items to people in need.

• We provided educational support to 1,470

students.

• We helped 455 people with medical surgeries,

treatments and equipment.

YEMEN
Yemen is facing the worst humanitarian crisis of our time. More than 3.6
million people in Yemen have been forced from their homes, with most
displaced by the fighting since March 2015. At least 10,000 people have
been killed so far.
One of the main struggles Yemenis face due to the conflict is food
insecurity. 400,000 children under 5 are suffering from severe
malnutrition and a staggering 14 million more people are facing
starvation. Nowhere in the world are there more people at risk of
starvation than in Yemen.

WF-AID has been actively providing urgent support to Yemenis since
the beginning of the conflict. From helping to evacuate 300 families
out of Yemen, to providing urgent food supplies and medical support,
your support has meant that we have been able to reach thousands of
families. We are working with our partners to distribute food packs to
families most in need. Some families told us this was the first time they
were receiving aid. The food packs contain long lasting and nourishing
food that is all locally sourced and tailored to the Yemeni diet. The foods
include flour, rice, sugar, milk powder, lentils, tomato paste, dates and
cooking oil amongst other items.
YOUR IMPACT

Your donations have provided urgent food to over

12,850 people since June 2018 and 170 rounds of life
saving dialysis treatment for kidney patients.

840,000 cups of porridge to 4,000
children in 16 schools in Kenya and
Tanzania.

FILL MY CUP
We often say breakfast is the most
important meal of the day, yet many don’t
have the ability to provide this for their
children.
WF-AID has taken great strides towards
reducing hunger in the communities
we serve. For over six years, we have
been running the Fill My Cup appeal
which provides a nutritious breakfast
to students in Kenya and Tanzania.
According to teachers, many of these
children would previously have left school
at mid-day break to look for food, often
not returning to school that day.
As a result of providing children with a
healthy and nutritious breakfast, school
teachers have commented on their
increased levels of concentration and
motivation, as well as improvements to
their academic performance and general
behaviour.
ZAINABIYA CHILD
SPONSORSHIP SCHEME

Every child has a right to an education. It gives children growing up in poverty an equal
opportunity to realise their dreams and change their destiny. Education breaks the cycle of
poverty and helps youngsters build a better future for themselves and their families.

The Zainabiyya Child Sponsorship Scheme (ZCSS) has been shaping the lives of students
since 1981 in India, Pakistan, Kenya and Tanzania. We have supported over 25,000
students to date.

With a greater emphasis now on college and university education, our students are going
on to study a wide range of courses including medicine, engineering and management.
Having a degree or diploma leads to employment opportunities which positively impact their
lives and their communities. With your support in Higher Education, families are able to
move out of Jamaat sponsored homes and move into their own homes. The sponsorships
provide tuition fees, course materials and educational support to children and students who
need it most.

YOUR IMPACT
We currently sponsor 950 students across India,
Pakistan, Kenya and Tanzania. Your sponsorships are
providing 709 children with primary education and 241
students with higher education.

 WF-AID’s annual Ramadan Relief appeal helps to
RAMADAN RELIEF alleviate some of the hardships many families face
during the Holy month of Ramadan. We distribute
aid in several countries around the world, including
Kenya, the United Kingdom and Yemen in the form of
food packs and iftaars.

Food baskets provide a nutritious daily meal that has

a far wider impact: they give children the strength
to go to school, their parents the strength to work
better and communities a chance to prosper without
needing to worry where their next meal will come
from. During Shahr Ramadan, the food packs allow
families to focus on benefitting spiritually from the
Holy month instead of worrying about where their
next meal will come from.

YOUR IMPACT
WF-AID distributed 19,705 Food Packs, which were
filled with nutritious items to widows, orphans and the
elderly living in 16 countries. During Shahr Ramadan, we
reached over 125,000 people and helped ease their lives
during the Holy month.

We worked closely with Africa Federation, India

Federation and Pakistan Federation to distribute Food
Packs to over 3,000 families within our own Khoja
community.

ECONOMIC UPLIFTMENT & EMPOWERMENT

Microfinance gives individuals the chance to work their way out of poverty - a chance to build
a better future for both themselves and their families.

At WF-AID, we are passionate about providing individuals with the support and resources
they need to improve their standard of living and work towards economic self-sufficiency.

This year, we have been focusing creating employment opportunities for women, especially
widows, older orphaned girls and deprived women, to enable them to gain the skills required
to earn a living for their families.

YOUR IMPACT
In Pakistan, 30 sewing machines were set up across two
vocational training centres in Sundus and Ranga in Skardu.
47 women received a four month training course in Industrial
Production and have since been offered jobs at the local
commercial garment market.
35 Syrian refugees attended classes to learn how to make
clothing and were gifted 15 sewing machines. These women
are also now working using their new skills.

Pakistan

WINTER APPEAL
Every year, hundreds of thousands of
families face a daily battle to stay alive
without the heating, food and clothing
they desperately need. Lack of warm
clothes, blankets, fuel for heat and poor
housing can not only be unbearable, but
also fatal.
WF-AID’s Winter Appeal provides warm
clothes, blankets, heaters and winter
warmer packs for those who cannot
afford warmth and heating in severe cold
weather. Our Winter Appeal distributions
took place in Iraq, Lebanon, Pakistan
and the United Kingdom.

 QURBANI
Qurbani is a meaningful and valued part
of Hajj. WF-AID facilitates the slaughtering
of goats and distributes the meat amongst
the poor and needy including widows,
seniors, orphans and the disabled.

HEALTHCARE

WF-AID supports several health centres and clinics to provide people with the treatments
they need. We have been working with these centres for many years, and thanks to your
support, many of them are now self-sufficient, so we can work with them in improving their
facilities and services.

EYE CLINICS

Aeinullah Eye Clinics in Pakistan enable people to receive treatment from ophthalmologists
at a subsidised cost, or free of charge for those who couldn’t afford it. There were 335 eye
consultations and 68 cataract surgeries performed.

In Mianwali, Pakistan, we funded eye camps in impoverished areas where the local people
were deprived of medical attention.

BREAST CANCER SCREENING

The Zainabiya Breast Cancer Screening Centre in Mianwali, Pakistan, has been running
for over five years. Through seminars, local newspapers, cable network and local radio,
we aim to raise awareness of breast cancer and encourage women to come to the centre
for screenings. In 2018, 12 women were screened and six of those were diagnosed and
referred to Noori hospital, Islamabad for treatment.

We’ve made it quick and easy to make sadaqah donations straight from your smartphone!

iSadaqah is our easy-to-use app, which lets you make sadaqah payments in just three simple
steps.

With busy daily lives and the rise in popularity of mobile payments, it can be easy to forget to pay
sadaqah, or hard to find some change to put into the boxes at home. iSadaqah, which is available
on both iOS and Android devices, allows you to make sadaqah payments in just a few simple steps,
whenever it’s convenient for you!

It takes moments to install, and just minutes to get set-up, and once your details are registered with
us, you can then give sadaqah in just a few clicks.

So, whether you are commuting to work in the morning or standing in a queue paying for your
shopping, you can use your phone to make a small donation and help those in need.

Our iSadaqah app is available to download for free on iOS and Android devices.

WF-CHANGERS

WF Changers are our group of volunteers and supporters who want to give back to the
community and make a difference in the world. This year has seen many great examples of
community fundraising activities, which have enabled WF-AID to support displaced widows and
orphans, provide lifesaving water to remote communities in Pakistan, Kenya and Bangladesh and
provide emergency relief to families in Yemen. Here are just some of the contributions from our
WF Changers:

FUNDRAISING THROUGH JUSTGIVING

Volunteers from across the UK have raised over £27,000 for our various appeals since January
2018 by setting up personal appeal pages on justgiving.com for their fundraising events and
challenges including marathons and bake sales.

LADIES QUIZ NIGHT

£5,400 was raised for our Yemen Appeal during a ladies quiz night in London. Those funds went
towards emergency food to families affected by the ongoing conflict.

DESSERT AUCTION

Our volunteers often set up fundraisers to celebrate their birthdays, asking friends and family
to contribute to a worthwhile cause as a birthday present. Sakinah Damji from the UK raised
enough funds to build a water well in Pakistan, giving a community access to clean and safe
water.

BACK TO BASICS COOK BOOKS

Our volunteers created a cookbook called ‘Back to Basics’, which was sold to raise funds for our
LZHH Syria Appeal. They raised over £2,700 for displaced Syrian widows and orphans.
