How to Download and Install NI Multisim

Overview
Are you having trouble with the download or installation of Multisim? This tutorial was made as a step-by-step guide to aid you
in the downloading and installing of Multisim (for both Educational and Professional Editions). This also serves as a reference
for who would like to download Multisim for an evaluation period. NOTE: If you have the Evaluation DVD or the Installer files
already, skip Steps 1-3.

1. Get the installer from the website.

Go to ni.com/multisim (http://www.ni.com/multisim/) and click on the Download NI Multisim tab under the Learn menu
on the left. Alternatively, you can go to ni.com/multisim/try (http://www.ni.com/multisim/try/).

Check which version of Multisim you bought (or are planning to buy). If you bought (or want to try) a Student or
Educational license, then select Download in the Multisim Education Edition tab. If you bought a Base, Full or Power
Pro license, select Download in the Multisim for Professionals tab.

2. Begin the download process.

For academic users, fill out the profile form and select Continue at the bottom. Select Start Download and save the
NI_Circuit_xx_x_x_Education_downloader.exe file. This is an application that manages the download process.

For professional users, select Start Download and save the NI_Circuit_Design_Suite_xx_x_x_downloader.exe file.

Once the download finishes, open it through your browser or from where you saved the file (Windows default is your
Download directory).

3. Download the program installer.

For all users, the National Instruments Downloader will ask for a directory to save the installer file. Choose whichever
directory you want to download the Multisim Installer to. The Downloads folder is recommended for this.

This is an executable file that contains the installer for the Professional or Education (depending on which you chose to
download) edition of Multisim. You can pause this download and resume it at a later point in time. The download speed
will vary depending on your internet connection speed and location.

How to Download
After the download finishes, select Open Folder.

This will take you to where the .EXE file was saved (or go to the folder where you saved the download).

Double click to run the installation. When the splash screen for the self extractor appears, click OK.

The next screen will show you where the extraction will be saved. Leave this on the default settings (it will extract the
files to a folder in your C drive called National Instruments Downloads.

Select Unzip. Once the extraction is complete, the Multisim splash screen will appear. Select Install NI Circuit Design
Suite xx.x.

If you closed or canceled the installation (whether on purpose or by mistake) you can return to the installation by
navigating to your National Instruments Download folder in your C drive, opening the NI Circuit Design Suite folder, and
double clicking on autorun.exe.

4. Multisim for those with an Evaluation DVD.

If you downloaded the installer from the website, please skip this step and go to Step 5. If you have the Evaluation DVD
for NI Multisim, insert it into your computer.
A splash screen will sometimes appear automatically depending on your windows settings. Click on Run autorun.exe
option after the AutoPlay screen appears. If the window does not appear, go to your Computer, and double-click on the
DVD drive which should contain the NI logo. After the splash screen for NI Circuit Design Suite appears, click on Install
NI Circuit Design Suite xx.x.

5. Installing Multisim.

Click on the Next >> button after the splash screen for the Multisim installation appears.

Fill out the blanks and choose the Install this product for evaluation option.

You can leave this option as default to install Multisim in your Program Files directory. Select Next >>.

The Installation Features page will ask you what you want to install. If the installer detects LabVIEW in your system and
you are planning on trying the co-simulation capabilities on Multisim at some point, then let the installer install the plug-
ins (for the current and an earlier version of LabVIEW).

For the academic users, you will get the extra NI ELVIS plug-in. It is recommended that you click on the left of the
feature and select Do not install NI ELVISmx 4.x. This will only work if you have an NI ELVIS unit with you, and can be
installed separately with the NI ELVIS installation. Select Next >> to proceed.
You can search for updates in case your software is not up-to-date by checking the box.

If you don’t want updates, uncheck the box, select Next >> and skip the next paragraph. If you did check the box, select
Next >> and the Installer will contact NI servers to find these updates. You will get a screen where you can choose
whether you want these updates installed or not, just like before. After choosing which updates you want, continue to the
next section.
Select I accept the License Agreement, and click Next >>.

The installer will now list and outline the changes or upgrades (in case you already have Multisim software installed).

You can now launch Multisim from the start menu under All Programs » National Instruments » Circuit Design Suite
xx.x » Multisim xx.x.
