3.Communication Setting
Communication setting for analyzer can be arranged on the RS232C screen of the
analyzer.

4.Communication mode
There are two communication modes, query mode, on which analyzer queries test
order to the host using sample ID after reading the bar-code on the sample, and
result transmission mode on which analyzer transmits result to the host every time
result is obtained. Various formats compatible with the old models are available on
the result transmission mode.

4.1. GX format and old model compatible format

Five formats, GX format (standard), G9 format, G8 format, G7 format and GHbV
A1c2.2 compatible format are available as communication formats. Select the
desired format using TRANS MODE on the PARAMETER screen of the analyzer.
These formats are compatible with HI-LEVEL mode.

Figure 4-1 PARAMETER screen(TRANS MODE)

GX FORM: GX format (default setting)

G9 FORM: G9 format (same as G8 FORM)
G8 FORM: G8 format
G7 FORM: G7 format
GHb-V FORM: GHbV A1c2.2 compatible format (Standard use)
GHb-V(SP): GHbV A1c2.2 compatible format (When “5 digits”
is selected for the number of digits of sample
number, if the sample is not CALIB, the sample
number is extended by adding 0 to the top digit
of the sample number. Refer to [6.2.5.GHbV
compatible format] for details.)

HOST CONNECTION SPECIFICATIONS HLC-723GX Rev.2

4.2.Hi-LEVEL and RP modes

The HI-LEVEL mode is available in GX format and the old model compatible formats.
The HI-LEVEL mode is processed using Handshake protocol.
RP mode is a dedicated communication mode for Tosoh Data Management Program
501RP(hereafter 501RP). For models connectable to 501RP and settings for 501RP,
please refer to 501RP’s manual.
The HI-LEVEL or RP mode can be selected by setting RP MODE on the
PARAMETER screen of the analyzer as below. Please make sure to set RP MODE
as “NO” except when the analyzer is connected with 501RP.

Set RP MODE as “YES”: RP mode(only when connected with 501RP)

Set RP MODE as “NO”: HI-LEVEL mode(except when connected with
501RP)

5.Transmission protocol
Handshake protocol is used as transmission protocol.
The control codes used in communications are shown below.
Code Name Meaning
(Hexadecimal)
02 STX Text start
03 ETX Text end
04 EOT Transmission end
06 ACK Normal reception response
15 NAK Abnormal reception response

Note:
If the host computer receives dust data, such as those caused by noise, from the
analyzer, please be sure to process them properly by the host computer.

5.1.Handshake
This protocol is used on the analyzer.
Communication content
<STX> text <ETX><BCC> →
← <ACK> or <NAK>
<EOT> →

Note:
1. <BCC> is the exclusion logic sum (exclusive OR), in character units, from
the start of the text to <ETX> and consists of a 1 byte binary. Moreover,
since <BCC> becomes the value of 00~7F by hexadecimal, please
process not to mistake for the control code used in transmission
procedure.
2. When <NAK> is returned transmission will be tried again up to 5 times.
After 5 times <EOT> will be transmitted and the protocol will be
reinitialized.
3. When multiple data sets exist, <EOT> will be transmitted at the end of
each data set.
4. The string from the beginning of the text to <BCC> must be transmitted
within 20 seconds. If this time limit is exceeded the protocol will be
reinitialized.
5. If there is no <ACK> or <NAK> response within 20 seconds, <EOT> will
be transmitted and the protocol will be reinitialized.

6.Communication format
6.1.Query
First, an order request for the sample ID is transmitted to the host from the
analyzer, then the analyzer waits for a response from the host. If no responses
are given within 30 seconds, the analyzer will consider it that there is no orders for
the sample ID.
To activate query mode, turn the QUERY key on (highlighted) on the RS232C
screen.

6.1.1.Sample and container type designation

The sample type (diluted, whole blood) and container type (sample cup, primary
tube) designated by the query will not be applied if they are not the same as those
defined by SMP MODE on the PARAMETER screen of the analyzer as below. In
such a case, those defined by SMP MODE will be used.

sample cup is considered as
a diluted sample and that in
a primary tube is considered
as a whole blood sample.
WHOLE BLD Fixed as a whole blood Judged by the sample Yes

Note-2 below)
Note:
1. Samples, which are set on calibrator holders, are processed as
calibrators. Calibrators have to be set in sample cups.
2. Even if query is designated, no query will be made for calibrators.

0.0-9999.9.

(*2) When TRANS CONFIG of the PARAMETER screen is set to

“BLK->IFCC”, this value is in IFCC as 0-99999 or 0-999999 or
0.0-9999.9.

(*3) When TRANS CONFIG of the PARAMETER screen is set to

“TA1->IFCC”, this value is in IFCC as 0-99999 or 0-999999 or
0.0-9999.9.

4. Each percent value is replaced with spaces of the number of

characters, if the measurement result satisfied the condition
formula for level 1 flag. (Replacement with zero (0.0) from the
spaces is available. Refer to [6.2.6 Flag level and
communication] for details).

5. The number of digits used for the sample ID is set by the BCxx
key on the RS232C screen of the analyzer.

6. When multiple data sets are to be transmitted, EOT is

transmitted after the last data set.

7. If the measurement result satisfied two or more condition

formula for flag defined on FLAG screen, only one flag code is
transmitted to the host according to the priorities of flags. The
level 1 flag is given priority over the level 0 flag. If two or more
condition formula of the same level of flag were satisfied, a
higher priority is given to the flag set lowest in the table of the
FLAG screen. (Refer to [6.2.6 Flag level and communication] for
details)

6.2.6.Flag level and communication

6.2.6.1.Flag level
Each flag can be set as level 0 flag or level 1 flag on FLAG screen.

Figure 6-5 FLAG screen

Flag level 0

Flag level 1

If the measurement result satisfied two or more condition formula for flag defined
on the FLAG screen, only one flag code is transmitted to the host according to the
priorities of flags. The level 1 flag is given priority over the level 0 flag. If two or
more condition formula of the same level of flag were satisfied, a higher priority is
given to the flag set lowest in the table of the FLAG screen.
For example, when the measurement result satisfied the conditions defined in the
1st row and 3rd row of the table in Figure 6-5, “40” is transmitted to the host as the
flag code.
If you need to change the priority of flag to be transmitted, please arrange the
order of rows in the table on the FLAG screen carefully studying the cases.

6.2.6.2.Flag level and #ERR TRANS FORM

If the measurement result satisfied the condition formula for the level 0 flag, the
numeric value is transmitted to the host computer as the result value. But, if the
measurement result satisfied the condition formula for the level 1 flag, spaces or
zero value is transmitted as the result. It is defined by #ERR TRANS FORM on the
PARAMETER screen of the analyzer which, spaces or zero, is transmitted in this
case.

Figure 6-6 PARAMETER screen (#ERR TRANS FORM)

TOSOH CORPORATION Bioscience Division Page 24/25

HOST CONNECTION SPECIFICATIONS HLC-723GX Rev.2

#ERR TRANS FORM ZERO : When the result satisfied the condition formula
for the level 1 flag, zero is transmitted as the
result value (percent value).
#ERR TRANS FORM SPACE : When the result satisfied the condition formula
for the level 1 flag, spaces are transmitted as
the result value (percent value).

The number of digits used for each percent value is subject to the set value by
PERCENT DECIMAL on the PARAMETER screen. A communication example when
the measurement result satisfied the condition formula for the level 1 flag is shown
below.
