OBJECTIVES 2

Sample Objectives by Content Type

Declarative Knowledge

Given an irrigation controller Installation and User Manual, students in the HORT58

Irrigation Systems Design & Management course will be able to list the common problems,

causes, and solutions associated with irrigation controller malfunctions with 100% accuracy.

From memory, HORT 58 students will be able to recall the minimum application-

efficiency standards for drip and sprinkler irrigation systems required by the California Water

Efficient Landscape Ordinance with 100% accuracy.

Concepts

From memory, students in the HORT58 Irrigation Systems Design & Management

course will be able to categorize water use of plant materials as “high,” “moderate,” “low,” or

“very low” with 100% accuracy.

Given a table titled General Soil Water Properties from the NRCS Engineering Handbook

652, HORT58 students will be able to identify the water holding capacities and infiltration rates

of the three basic soil types with 100% accuracy.

Principles

Given a scenario describing an irrigation system with a high application rate that applies

water to a soil with a low infiltration rate on a steep slope HORT58 students will be able to

predict what will happen when the system is operated with 100% accuracy.

Procedures
OBJECTIVES 3

Given all necessary materials and tools students in the HORT58 Irrigation Systems

Design & Management course will be able to assemble a drip irrigation system valve manifold

that is leak-free and conforms to industry standards.

Given a Hunter Pro-C irrigation controller and a step job aid, HORT 58 students will be

able to program the controller with 100% accuracy.

Problem Solving

Given an interactive PowerPoint lesson, a flow chart, and an Excel spreadsheet, HORT58

students will be able to develop a climate-appropriate landscape irrigation schedule for the North

Central Coast region of California that meets state regulatory standards

Given a scenario describing a malfunctioning irrigation controller HORT58 students will

be able to diagnose the cause of the malfunction with a maximum of two errors in ten tries.

Cognitive Strategies

Without referring to the textbook or any other plant identification reference material

students in the HORT63 Plant Materials course will use mnemonics to assist in identifying and

distinguishing sedges, rushes, and grasses. (Sedges have edges, rushes are round, grasses have

nodes from the blades to the ground)

From memory HORT63 students will use mnemonics to assist in listing the seven

classifications of taxonomy for biological life in order from largest to smallest. (Kids Prefer

Cheese Over Fried Green Spinach – Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species)

Attitudes
OBJECTIVES 4

Without prompting HORT58 students will choose to wear appropriate personal protective

equipment (PPE) when using primer and solvent cement to assemble PVC pipe and fittings in

accordance with manufacturer and industry standards.

Psychomotor Skills

Given all necessary materials and tools students in the HORT58 Irrigation Systems

Design & Management course will be able to repair a broken polyethylene (PE) drip irrigation

pipe so that it is watertight and conforms to industry standards.

From memory HORT58 students will be able to apply primer and solvent cement to PVC

pipe and fittings and assemble the pipe and fittings in accordance with manufacturer and industry

standards within 30 seconds. √
