______________________________________________________________________________
Section 1.
Solubility (13.2) and Energetics of Solution (13.3)
1. Define solubility in one sentence. Explain the Chemist’s rule for solubility

2. Look at example 13.1 and then do for practice 13.1 determine whether each compound is
soluble in hexane.

3. Describe in a sentence the energy changes in solution formation.

Write the equation for the enthalpy of solution.

4. Define Heat of Hydration for ionic compounds. What is the lattice energy of an ionic
compound equal to? Write the equation for the enthalpy of solution of ionic
compounds.

Section 2 Factors Affecting Solubility and Pressure Effects and Solubility (13.4)

1. Explain solution equilibrium in at least one sentence. Define saturated, unsaturated and
supersaturated solutions.

2. What is the effect of Temperature on the solubility of solids? What is the effect of
Temperature on the solubility of gases

3. What is the effect of Pressure on the solubility of gases? Write out Henry’s law and
define the terms.
Using Henry’s Law one can either calculate the pressure needed to keep a certain
solubility of a gas or the solubility of a gas. Look at example 13.2 and try for practice
13.2.
Section 3 and 4. Concentration Units (13.5) and Colligative Properties (13.6)
1. Write out the equations for the main concentration units: molarity, molality, mole
fraction and percent by mass. Try the for practice and more practice 13.3

2. Define vapor pressure. Write Raoult’s Law and define the terms. What is vapor
pressure lowering Review both example 13.6 and example 13.7. Know how to do the
calculations for both types of solutions.

3. What is Freezing Point Depression and Boiling Point Elevation? Write the two
equations and define the terms. Look at example 13.8 and 13.9

Section 5 Osmotic Pressure (13.6) and Colligative Properties of Strong Electrolytes

1. What is Osmotic Pressure? Write the equation used and define the terms. Look at
example 13.10

2. Why do we need to treat electrolytes differently than non-electrolytes when

determining colligative properties? Explain what the van’t Hoff factor is. Write the
equations to use to calculate freezing point depression, boiling point elevation and
osmotic pressure for electrolytes.
