Bushwalking

Comparison

As I did not attend the deep creek camp but rather completed two separate day walks I am
writing a piece to reflect the positives and negatives of each type of bushwalking.

The day walks that I participated in were extremely convenient to suit my heavy university,
social and sporting timetable. This allowed me to still take in the environmental benefits that
the class would have on their camp. I was also able to adjust the time and day I decided to go
as weather impacted my motivation on certain days; in Mildura I was able to change from a
37o day to a 24o day during the mid-semester break. Another benefit completing day walks is
the amount of packing and planning that needs to be put in to the walk. If choosing to take a
well-known track with signs it may be as simple as a water bottle and a communication device.
If going off track in to unknown territory a first aid kit and food will be necessary; however,
this can still be taken in a small backpack between two or three people. As less luggage needs
to be taken; further distances and rougher terrain can be covered with less expenditure or
difficulty; which can be beneficial to those who are injured or aerobically deficient.

Participating in an overnight bushwalk or camp provide multiple opportunities for learning
especially when setting up camp, cooking tea, washing up and going to the toilet. Other
chances including star gazing and being able to deepen knowledge on local flora and fauna;
leadership opportunities for participants can also be had by taking ownership of certain
preparation packages and operations throughout the camp including meals; transport and a
campsite leader. Taking part in a camp can also increase the length of the walk and the
difficulty for those who are after a challenge. Camping is also a rare opportunity for many;
that should be made the most of when it becomes available.

Comparisons between the two proves that there are positives to both types of bushwalking
experiences; choosing the right one depends on capabilities, time available and wants fo the
individual or group. Bushwalking can be suited to anyone wanting to participate in the
outdoors; however different motives behind the experience will determine what form is best
for the situation based on the above information.
