COMPACTION LAB

Instructions
Carry out the standard compaction test for the soil at the moisture content provided

by following the procedure given below:

Measure the diameter and height of the mold to compute its volume in Litres. The

volume of stand mold is 1.0 Litre.

Weigh the mould along with the base plate and note in Table below.

Secure the mold to the base plate and fill it upto approximately half its height with

loose soil.

Compact the first layer by imparting 27 blows uniformly across the section.

Repeat the procedure for second and third layer

Separate the mold from the base plate and shave off any extra material with a knife

so that the top of compacted specimen is flush with the top of the mold

Weigh the mold along with the base and the wet sample and note the reading in the

Table below

Take a small sample for determining the moisture content

Determine the bulk density and the water content. Use this information to compute

the dry density by using the following equation:

Subsequently, extrude the soil from the mold and repeat the test using heavy

compaction.

Each group will carry out the test at different moisture content to get 5 sets of data for the dry density
and the corresponding water content for the standard compaction test and another 5 sets of values for
the Heavy compaction test.

Each student should plot these 10 points

Complete the following sheets including all calculations.

Repeat the procedure for the NZ heavy Compaction
test using 4.5 kg hammer with height of fall 45 cm.
The mold is filled in 5 layers. Rest of the procedure
remains the same.
