Objectives:

1. Describe the main functions of the respiratory system

2. Identify the different parts of the respiratory system
3. Demonstrate appreciation on the importance of taking good care
of the respiratory system.

3
Oxygen is the most important for
keeping us alive because body cells
need it for energy and growth. Without
oxygen, the body's cells would die.
Carbon dioxide is the waste gas that is
produced when carbon is combined
with oxygen as part of the body's
energy-making processes.

The process of taking air into

our lungs (inhalation) and
expelling it from the lungs
(exhalation) is called breathing.

5
The respiratory system is
composed of a group
of muscles, blood vessels,
and organs that enable us to
breathe. The most important function
of the lungs is to take oxygen
from the environment and
transfer it to the bloodstream
and to expel carbon dioxide
out of our body.

Let’s look at the

diagram below

7
To understand the different
parts and functions of the
Respiratory System…

follow me.

I’m here….

The job of the Respiratory System starts

here…
Nasal Cavity
This is the inside of your nose. It is lined
with a mucous membrane so you won’t
get nosebleeds from a dry nose. There are
also little hairs, called Cilia, that help filter
the air you breathe in, blocking dirt and
dust from getting into your lungs.

The air can also come inside your body

through the
Oral Cavity
This refers to the mouth. It happens when
you are at rest, exercising or when you
have clogged nose.
9
The next part would be the
Pharynx
This is the part of the body that connects
the nasal and oral cavities. It is commonly
referred to as the throat.
It allows for the movement of air from the
nose and mouth to the larynx in the
process of breathing.

10

And then the air would go to the

Larynx
Commonly known as the voice box.
A cartilaginous structure at the top of
the trachea; contains elastic vocal cords
that are the source of the vocal tone in
speech.
To keep food from entering the
windpipe of the lungs we have the
epiglottis. It is an elastic cartilage
attached to the entrance of the Larynx.

11
Wait! Wait! Wait…

These organs composed the Upper Respiratory Tract.

Now to check whether or not you have understood

everything so far, please proceed to page 25.

Were you able to answer the activity?

If no, you may take your time and go back to the previous
pages and review.
If yes, (yehey! Very Good!) you may proceed to the next page…
12

You have done a good job in that fist activity!!

Now let us continue…

This time we are going to learn about the

other organs that are involve in the
Respiratory System, they composed the
Lower Respiratory Tract.

13
Trachea
The trachea (or windpipe) is a
wide, hollow tube that connects
the larynx (or voice box) to the
bronchi of the lungs. It is an
integral part of the body’s
airway and has the vital
function of providing air flow to
and from the lungs for
respiration.

14

We are about to enter the Lungs, we are

going to have a close up look at what is
happening in there.

15
Lungs
These are spongy,
pinkish organ looks
like two upside-down
cones in your chest.
The Lungs are covered
by pleura to prevent
friction of the lungs
against the rib cage.

16

Bronchi
singularly known as a bronchus,
are extensions of the windpipe
that shuttle air to and from the
lungs. Think of them as
highways for gas exchange, with
oxygen going to the lungs and
carbon dioxide leaving the lungs
through them.

17
Bronchioles
are tubes in the lungs which
branch off from the
larger bronchi that enter each
lung they carry oxygen rich air
into the lungs and carry carbon
dioxide rich air out of the lungs

18

The Alveoli are covered with

blood capillaries so that the
exchange of gases can take
place between the membrane
of the alveoli and the
surrounding capillaries.
Alveoli
These are an important part of
the respiratory system whose
function it is to exchange
oxygen and carbon dioxide
molecules to and from the
bloodstream. These tiny,
balloon-shaped air sacs sit at
the very end of the respiratory
tree and are arranged in
clusters throughout the lungs.
19
Now we are about to enter into the
important part of the respiratory
system. Here is where the magic
happens.

Are you ready?

If not… be ready!

Come on… I know you are ready…

20

Gas Exchange takes place in

the millions of alveoli in the
lungs and the capillaries
that envelop them.

As shown in the picture,

inhaled oxygen moved
from the alveoli to the
blood in the capillaries and
carbon dioxide moves from
the blood in the capillaries
to the air in the alveoli.
Then the carbon dioxide
will back and be release
though the nose or the
mouth.
21
The last part is a dome shape sheet
of muscle that separates the chest
from the abdomen.

Diaphragm
The breathing process is aided
by this. When you breath in the
diaphragm contracts downward,
creating a vacuum that causes a
rush of fresh air into the lungs.
The opposite occurs when
exhalation, where the
diaphragm relaxes upward,
pushing on the lungs, allowing
them to deflate.

22

Let’s stop again for a while.

Now to check whether or not you have understood

everything so far, please proceed to page 26

Do you understand each of these parts?

If no, you may take your time and go back to the
previous pages.
If yes, (yehey!) you may proceed to the next page…

23
Here are some tips on you can take a good care of your
respiratory system.
1. Have adequate hydration, drink at least 8 glasses of
water
2. Get adequate rest, have 8 hours of sleep
3. Wash hands frequently with soap and water
4. Have proper nutrition to boost immune systems
5. Do not smoke.

RESEARCH PROPOSAL
I. BACKGROUND

The attention span of students nowadays are very short because of many different things. They have
their friends who always want to chat with them, there family who would want spend more time with
them and there is what we call “technology” – social media, online games and even online dating.
Because of these things, it is very difficult for them to focus on their studies. Teachers now need to
adapt to this situation.

This Strategic Intervention Material is one of the many ways teachers can catch up with the students.
This a way to somehow hold their focus on a topic because of the varied activities that goes with this
SIM.

II. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
