The subjects of thermodynamics, fluid dynamics and heat transfer were the core subjects of the
thermal power engineering. The concepts taught in these subjects were interlinked to each other.
Thermodynamics basically deals with the study of system, properties, heat and work interactions. In
this subject, I learnt about the thermodynamic system, its state, properties and interaction of heat
and work from the system to surrounding. There are several reversible and irreversible processes
that are executed by the system. These processes form the basis of thermodynamics cycles which
are used practically to convert the heat into work. Thermodynamic cycles for both the ideal gas and
steam were studied. Carnot cycle is the ideal operating cycle for ideal gas while Rankine cycle is the
ideal cycle for vapor. The improvements in the Rankine cycle were studied to have the maximum
efficiency of the cycle. These improvements include superheat, regenerative, lowering the
condenser pressure and increasing the boiler pressure. The basic refrigeration cycles used in the
heat pumps and refrigerators were also studied and learnt briefly.
The fluid dynamics deals with the study of fluids in statics and dynamics conditions. The concepts of
fluid flowing in pipe and ducts i.e. laminar flow and turbulent flow, viscous flows around the solid
bodies and boundary layers were learnt. The fundamental concepts of fluids in statics like specific
gravity, pressure exerted by fluid and viscosity were learnt which form the basis of this subject.
Control volume approach was learnt to analyze the flowing fluid through a system. Techniques of
similitude and dimensional analysis were learnt that are of vital importance to analyze the behavior
of prototype and model. It also covers the theoretical techniques to form dimensionless number
which provide us very useful information about the fluids. The aspects of fluid flowing in the pipe
were learnt that include laminar flow, turbulent flow, developing flow and developed flow. The
velocity profiles and temperature profiles of the fluids flowing were learnt.
In heat transfer subject, the various mechanisms of heat transfer were studied that include
conduction, convection and radiation. The basic concepts of heat transfer and Fourier’s conduction
law was studied in the conduction mode of heat transfer. Methods for the transient heat conduction
were studied that were used to study the time dependent features of temperature. Numerical
techniques were studied to model the conduction heat transfer. Convection heat transfer was learnt
and the various correlations for the Nusselt number were learnt that help us to calculate the value
of heat transfer coefficients.
The subject of engineering simulation and computation was of vital importance. In this
course, effort was made to learn the software skills on MALTAB. The basics techniques of
using MATLAB were addressed. The competency in using the MATLAB was developed by
using the built-in commands and writing MATLAB codes. The different data types and
plotting curves and finding the solution of linear equations was learnt. This software is very
useful in simulation studies. Experimental studies require huge amount of money and time
which one cannot afford all times. Simulations can be performed on the software and
feasibility of system can be predicted based on the simulated results.

civil engineering drawings and mechanical engineering drawings. Effort was made to draw the
pictorial and engineering views of an object. Design skills were polished considering the design
aspects of product. The problem-solving technique were improved by applying them in engineering
conceptual problems.
To produce the product that should run long term and reliable, the material of that product must
possess suitable properties. To distinguish the different types of materials and their mechanical
properties, the course of Mechanical Technology was taken which discussed these concepts. After
learning this course, I gained the basic concept of different types of materials and mechanical
properties associated with those materials. A product can contain more than one material, then
selection of materials must be subjected to the required properties of the product. The mechanical
properties of the materials can be obtained from the stress strain curves. The different
manufacturing techniques and cutting operations were learnt to manufacturing the required
product. Different types of stresses and various failure theories of material were learnt. The
engineers should have sound knowledge and understanding of existing standards. Also, based on his
knowledge, experience, research he should always make effort to propose new standards of
mechanical system that might be more useful. The courses of Professional Practice broadened my
vision of observing things and enhanced my practical skills.
