Lesson Plan in Science 5

Prepared by: Rosanna Mae A. Pensona Wednesday, October 9,2019

I. Objective:
Enumerate the parts and functions of a flower. (S5LT-IIf-6)

Taking care of plants.

II. Content and Materials:

A. Subject Matter:
Enumerating the parts and functions of flower.
B. References:
Science Beyond Borders page 72-74, www.makemegenius.com
C. Materials:
Gumamela flower, flash cards, charts
D. Concept
Parts of the Flower and their Functions

The receptacle is the enlarged upper end of a flower stalk that bears the flower or group
of flowers.
Sepals are modified leaves that enclose and protect the other parts of a flower when it is
still a bud. When the flower blooms, the sepal supports the bottom of the flower. A group
of sepals called calyx.
Petals form the most obvious part of a flower. Most petals are brightly colored to attract
insects for pollination. A group of petals is called corolla.
Stamen is the male part of the flower. It consists of the filament and the anther. The
filament holds anther in a position tall enough to release the pollen. The anther consists of
two lobes that contain pollen sacs. Pollen sacs have pollen grains that are released by the
anther when they mature.
The pistil is the female part of a flower. It consists of the stigma, style, and ovary. The
style is a stalk that connects the stigma to the ovary. It is tall enough to trap pollen grains.
The stigma is a swollen structure at the end of the style. It receives the pollen grains. The
mature stigma secretes a fluid that stimulates the pollen grains to germinate.

III. Learning Activities

A. Engagement
1. Drill (Flash Cards)

RECEPTACLE PEDICEL SEPAL ANTHER POLLEN TUBE

2. Review
What is Asexual Reproduction? Give some examples.

3. Motivation / Presentation
Show Gumamela Flower and ask students:
 Do you have a garden at your house?
 Do you have this in your garden?
 Do you like flowers?
Have you ever wonder how they reproduce?
Enumerate the parts and functions of a flower.

B. Exploration
Show students what are the parts of the gumamela flower by describing each
part.

a. Activity: Groupings

The setting of Standards:

work actively in a group activity.
help each other in a group.
collaborate with groupmates
use mouth wisely and listen carefully.

Activity 1
Group the students into four. Let them draw of gumamela and enumerate the parts and function
of each part.

b. Reporting
Each group will present their idea about the parts and functions of a flower.

C. Explanation
a. Discussion
Discuss the parts and functions of a flower.

Parts of the Flower

Parts Functions
Receptacle is the enlarged upper end of a flower stalk that bears the flower or group
of flowers.
Sepals modified leaves that enclose and protect the other parts of a flower when

Pistil the female part of a flower. It consists of the stigma, style, and ovary.
Filament holds anther in a position tall enough to release the pollen.
Anther consists of two lobes that contain pollen sacs.
Style a stalk that connects the stigma to the ovary. It is tall enough to trap
pollen grains.
Stigma is a swollen structure at the end of the style. It receives the pollen grains.
The mature stigma secretes a fluid that stimulates the pollen grains to
germinate.

b. Activities 2
Call a student to answer the question by enumerating the functions of parts of the flowers.
1. A swollen structure at the end of the style. It receives the pollen grains. The mature
stigma secretes a fluid that stimulates the pollen grains to germinate. –stigma
2. The male part of the flower. It consists of the filament and the anther. – stamen
3. Form the most obvious part of a flower. Brightly colored to attract insects for
pollination. – petals
4. The female part of a flower. It consists of the stigma, style, and ovary. – the pistil
5. Consists of two lobes that contain pollen sacs. – anther

IV. Elaboration
a. Generalization
What are the parts and functions of a flower?

Value integration: Why is it important to take care of plants or flowers?

(Discuss the importance of taking care of plants or flowers)

b. Application
Call a student to give parts of plants and the student will call another classmate to discuss the
functions of each part.

V. Evaluation
Direction: Read the description of the functions of the flower in each sentence and select
the correct answer below inside the box.
