ETO 14 ORALS COMMENTS

General Appearance:

All students came in Full sleeved Shirts and tie. Most came in white shirts, some in uniform shirts.

All students could be told to invest in a couple of shirts which will not get creased easily and a good
tie to go with them.

Grooming was OK. A couple of students are sporting the current “mush room” type hairstyle. (
I think that is the name).

Bio data/ Resume

A few students did not come prepared with their biodata and went to get a printout after reaching
here. A couple did not have it at all.

There is no standard format being used. It will be better if a standard format is used.

Many of them had spelling and grammatical errors, which create a poor impression. Most students
had written about projects done in college. When questioned about these projects ( only at a basic
level) they were not able to answer. Some could not even explain the terms they have used in the
write up about the projects.

During my later interaction, I have told them all to prepare their bio data keeping the job they are
applying for and the Industry they are working in.

Other Points noted:

DOL starter: Most are not showing the difference between start button and stop button. Many have
not drawn the coil

AC Voltage wave form poor understanding of X and Y axis. Many have not identified what is on X axis
and what is on why axis. Some have shown V on Y axis and I on X axis.

There is no understanding of watch duties and that there will an engineer on watch /duty all the
time. In response to questions such “ during your rounds in ER you notice this abnormality – what
will you do “ they are saying CE or captain should be informed.

Synchronisation of alternators:

Most students are saying phase sequence of the two alternators should be same. As you all know
phase sequence of an alternator cannot change from time to time and what is checked with the
synchroscope is the phase angle between identical voltage wave forms of the two alternators. If
they are questioned in depth about synchronising they will not be able to answer.

Many students have written that “Multimeter can also measure insulation resistance but not for
high voltage” . Only a few have written that MM is used to measure the resistance of conductors.
Magnetic contactor vs Circuit breaker:

While most have answered correctly,- if not clearly- quite a few have written about controlling
magnetic field, sparks etc.

Requirement for reverse power protection not understood.

Classes of fire :

They all should be taught about the ISO standard for fire classification as per the material uploaded
in schoology.

Basic vessel operation: How is the vessel propelled? How does it turn? How is the speed of the
vessel measured, How is it navigated? What are the basic cargo operations :

All these should be known to the students at the familiarisation level.

Machinery such as Diesel engine, Boilers, Air compressor , steering gear etc :

These topics are only now going on and understandably they did not know much.

However for the NYK candidates atleast a quick lecture on

1) Purpose of various important machinery onboard

2) Their safety features should be covered

For same students, Instrumentation and control, at introductory level about various controllers in
ER. Simple questions such as what is calibration etc.

I will prepare some more MCQs for the students to take. Meanwhile others can take a look at the
marks scored by the students and think of what more can be done. The MCQ marks and the
questions and answers can be seen at the ETO Schoology course >>materials>> ETO Test1 and PLI
test.
