PROJECT BASED LEARING
DEFINITION:
Project Based Learning is a teaching method in which students gain knowledge and
skills by working for an extended period of time to investigate and respond to an
authentic, engaging, and complex question, problem, or challenge.

According to W.H.Kilpatric a student of John Dewey

=> A project is an activity in which an objective is realized
devotedly in the social environment.

MEANING:
Project Based Learning (PBL) is an instructional
methodology that encourages students to learn and apply
knowledge and skills through an engaging experience. PBL
presents opportunities for deeper learning in-context and for
the development of important skills tied to college and career
readiness.

CHARACTERISTICS OF PROJECT BASED

LEARNING:
1.) Inter-disciplinary
PBL focuses on engaging students with real-world problems.
This is an interdisciplinary approach because real-world
challenges are rarely solved using information or skills from a
single subject area. Projects require students to engage in
inquiry, solution building, and product construction to help
address the real-world issue or challenge presented.
As students do the work, they often use content knowledge and
skills from multiple academic domains to successfully complete
the project.
2.) Rigorous
Project based learning requires the application of knowledge
and skills, not just recall or recognition. PBL is more complex
and can be used to assess how students apply a variety of
academic content in new contexts. As students engage in the
work of a project, they follow a process that begins with
inquiry. Inquiry leads to deeper learning, not just related to
academic content, but also related to the use of content in real
world applications. Inquiry processes can help lead to the
development of solutions that address the problem/challenge of
the project and the creation of products to communicate
solutions to an audience based upon the application of content
and skills.
3.) Student-centered
In PBL, the role of the teacher shifts from content-deliverer to
facilitator/ project manager. Students work more
independently through the PBL process, with the teacher
providing support only when needed. Students are encouraged
to make their own decisions about how best to do their work
and demonstrate their understanding. The PBL process fosters
student independence, ownership of his/her work, and the
development of 21st century/workplace skills.
STEPS OF PROJECT BASED LEARNING:
1) Selection of a Project
In this teacher should let students their project themselves.
2)Preparing outline
Preparing outline means what should be done in the selected
project and after that different responsibilities should be given
to different students accordingly and all this should be
recorded.
3)execution of the Project
When students finalize the work that should be done and start
doing the Project. They start to execute the responsibility
given to them and students gain knowledge in order to
complete their respective responsibility.
4)Evaluation
After the has completed, students and the teacher evaluate
together. The success and failure of the Project is estimated on
the basis of its objective.

TYPES OF PROJECT:
1)Construction-Related Projects ->
Such as construction of garden,museum,aquarium.etc.
2)Inspection-Related Projects ->
Under this, several projects can be made such as observation of
specific characteristics of different types of insects, living
beings, flowers, vegetation. Etc.
3)Consumer Project ->
Such as farming, gardening. Etc.
4)Collection-Related Projects ->
The Projects related to the collection of different types of
animals, plants, models. Etc.
5)Identification-Related Projects ->
Classification related projects in which students are asked to
classify fruits, seeds, roots, insects. Etc.

ROLE OF TEACHER IN PROJECT BASED

LEARNING:
1)Project work is an effective instructional method which
requires participation of both the teacher and student.
2)In PBL, Teacher is not a dictator but a guide, friend,
philosopher and a working partner,
3)Teacher help the student formulate clear objectives of the
project.
4)Teacher guide and help students to locate and use different
resources.
5)Teacher encourages students to work collectively and
cooperatively.
6)Teacher encourages students that each member should
contribute something to the project.
7)Teacher checks the progress of every student, Regularly.
8)Teacher evaluates the efficiency and effectiveness of the
project as a learning activity.

ROLE OF STUDENTS IN PROJECT BASED

LEARNING:
1)Students should have clear idea of the objective of the
project.
2)Students should understand the scope and limitations of the
projects.
3)Students should design a suitable plan and strategy for
dealing with the project.
4)Students should discuss various aspects of the project with
the Teacher.
5)Student should collect all necessary information and
material.
6)Cooperate with other students in case of group projects.
7)Stick to time scheduled for the project.
8)Interpret information properly.
9)Draw appropriate conclusions of the project.
10)Compile effective project report.
11)Present the report effectively.
ADVANTAGES OF PROJECT BASED
LEARNING:
1)Students think, read, and work themselves.
2)Students remain active during the entire project.
3)Students understand their responsibility and fulfill them.
4)Coordination is established among students.
5)The acquired knowledge is permanent.
6)It promotes better knowledge of the practical aspects of
knowledge gained from books.
7)It enhances student's social skills.
8)It provides a psychological boost because it allows the
students a great degree of freedom.
9)It develops positive towards manual work.

LIMITATIONS OF PROJECT BASED

LEARNING:
1)It consumes much of the teaching time.
2) Knowledge is not acquired in a systematic manner.
3)It is time consuming because it takes a lot of time to plan
and execute a single project.
4)It is not possible to cover all the topics or content through
this method.
