ASSIGNMENT TEST # I
(Assume suitable data if required)
Note: PSG / Mahadevan Design Data Book is permitted.
1. a) Explain with examples basic procedure of machine design
[CO1]
b) Explain the manufacturing considerations in design.

2. Define Stress Concentration. What are the causes of Stress concentration
and Explain with neat sketches methods of reducing stress concentration?

3. A Cylindrical shaft made of steel of yield strength 600MPa is subjected to
static loads consisting of bending moment 15kN-m and a torsional moment
25kN-m. Determine the diameter of the shaft using all theories of failure
and assuming a factor of safety of 2. Take E=200GPa and poisons
ratio=0.25.

4. A rotating shaft of 24 mm diameter is having and yield strength of 440
Mpa. It is subjected to an axial load of 4000 N, steady torque of 60 N-m
and a bending moment of 80 N-m. Determine the factor of safety using:-
(a) Max. shear stress theory; (b) Max. Distortion Energy theory.

5. A cantilever beam made of steel Fe 600 (ultimate strength of 600 N/mm2

and yield strength of 400 N/mm2) and subjected to a load (P) of 6 kN. is
shown below. The beam is machined and the reliability factor is 0.897. The
factor of safety is 2 and the notch sensitivity factor is 0.9. Calculate the
diameter “d” of the beam.

6. A shaft is subjected to a torsional moment that varies from 150 N-m clock
wise to 100 N-m counter clock wise. The shaft is made of steel having
ultimate tensile strength 550 N/mm2 and yield strength of 410 N/mm2. The
corrected endurance limit of the shaft is 200 N/mm 2. Determine the
diameter of the shaft using a factor of safety of 2. Use Goodman and
Soderberg’s equations.
