Chapter 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING

Introduction

One of today’s emerging issue was the relationship with family, bullying, substance

abuse, adjustments to the transition into adulthood and decisions making for career.

Different kinds of studies have been proven that the difficulties like appetite disturbance,

concentration problems, stress and pressure are most efficient to different level of

students especially in highschool students/freshmen. Freshimens are most likely to

experience shock by their new environment, low self esteem, and hardship.

By the help of counselling system to students it can provide intervention so that

their social and emotional circumstances would not affect to their academic

performance. Therefore, the comprehensive school counselling program aims the

success of every students. It was integral to the school’s educational environment and

partner with other academic and behavioral initiatives to the positive changes in student

achievement and behaviour, Counselors plan this program and to collaborate with

school administrator other professional educators and community members. Counselor

plays a big role they support and help students to choose plans for future and mental

health problems and they advocate and remove barriers to students success which

resulting to positive changes like increasing participation in the school, better

attendance, improved graduation rate and completed learning requirement, attain

discipline and different achievements.

Background of the Study

The comprehensive counseling program is an integral component of the school's

mission is to identify the knowledge and skills all students. The researchers found a

study about the behavior of the students the goes through the comprehensive

counseling. The study was conducted during 2013 in Zalingei City-Sudan; the aim of

study was to investigate the effectiveness of school counseling program based on

counseling activities to support mental health.

The researcher used the descriptive statistic method, Questioner technique is used

as method of data collection in addition school counseling's program prepared by the

researcher. Study group was formed from basic school pupils, (40) pubils were selected

randomly from study group as a sample. The data was analyzed by using SPSS

program, the results are following: The level of mental health among basic level school

is lower, and it significant at the level (0.05), the school counseling program based on

counseling activities is effectiveness, and have impact on mental health as supporter, it

significant at the level (0.05).the school counseling program based on counseling

activities is effectiveness, and it reduce the mental illness symptoms. Diagnosing a

mental health condition can only be done by a qualified health professional. However,

some symptoms may raise awareness that there is a concern brewing. Knowing more

about the symptoms of various mental health conditions, and how they are diagnosed,

can help you better understand if you or a loved one is in need of help.

School counselors provide counseling programs in three critical areas: academic,

Personal/social and career. Their services and programs help students resolve

emotional, social or behavioral problems and help them develop a clearer focus or

sense of direction. School counselors, like all educational Professionals, are increasingly

being required to demonstrate evidence of effective practice. School counselors in

collaborative efforts can implement both systemic and programmatic changes in schools

and communities to prevent students from dropping out of school (Cheek and et al,

2002).

School counselors have proven effective in preventing students from committing

suicide (Jones, 2001). According to the American School Health Association, the

maximum recommended student/counselor ratio is 250:1(Institute of Medicine (1997).

Also based to the U.S. Department of Education, the current U.S. average

student/counselor ratio is 488:1. The ratio is more than 1,000:1 in some schools.

(National Center for Education Statistics, 2005). Basic school counselors influenced their

students' future plans by encouraging them to have high expectations (Mau& Calvert,

1998).

The impact of comprehensive counseling program to students is a collaborative

effort between the school counselor, families, community stakeholders and other

educators to create an environment resulting in a positive impact on student

achievement. Education professionals, including school counselors, value and respond

to the diversity and individual differences in our societies and communities in culturally

sensitive and responsive ways. Comprehensive school counseling programs in both the

brickand-mortar and virtual settings ensure equitable access to opportunities and

rigorous curriculum for all students to participate fully in the educational process.

Theoretical Framework

In behavior theory, theorists believes that actions are determined by life experiences.
In other words, the behavior is learned. Therefore, explanations and treatments relies on
principles of learning, or processes by which behaviors change in response to the
environment.

A primary concept in behaviorism is conditioning, which refers to simple forms of

learning that involve stimuli and rewards. Several types of conditioning may produce normal
or abnormal behavior. Some of these conditioning are the ff:

 In operant conditioning, humans and animals learn to behave in certain ways as

a result of receiving rewards whenever they do so.
 Classical conditioning is a type of learning occurs by temporal association. This
means that when two events happens often close together, they become a
fused in a person’s mind, and a person responds in the same way to both
events. One of the discoveries of Ivan Pavlov is his famous experiments with
dogs. The dogs associated the sound of a dinner bell with food and began
drooling at the sound.
 In modeling, individuals learn responses simply by observing other individuals
and repeating their behaviors.

Behavioral therapy seeks to determine behaviors that are causing a person’s problems
and then tries to replace behaviors with principles of operant conditioning, classical
conditioning and modeling. For example, one classical conditioning treatment is systematic
desensitization, which changes abnormal reactions to particular stimuli. A therapist will apply
this treatment method to specific phobia to help clients learn how to react calmly and
peacefully to feared objects or situations. The client will imagine or confront feared objects
or situations, starting with the least feared and ending with the most feared.

Similar tobehavioral theory, psychodynamic theory believes that actions are

determined largely by life experiences. Psychodynamic theories rest on the premises that all
behavior is determined by past experiences. According to Ronald Comer in Abnormal
Psychology,no symptoms or behavior is “accidental,”

The first psychodynamic model was formulated by Viennese neurologist Sigmund

Freud. He believed that there are three central forcesthat shapes one’s personality — the
“Id” contains natural needs, the ego engages reasoning and the superego represents a
person’s values and ideals. Moreover, Freud proposed stages of developments that require
adjustments in id, ego and superego; if the proper adjustment doesn’thappen, the person
may be headed for abnormal functioning.Other theorists, notably Carl Jung and Alfred Adler,
diverged from Freud and developed new theories. All of these are considered to be
psychodynamic theories, as they share Freud’s belief that human functioning is shaped by
dynamic (interacting) psychological forces.

Psychodynamic therapies involve several techniques such as the following.

 Free association involves the client describing any thought, feeling or image that
comes to mind, even if it is somehow unimportant. This helps uncover unconscious
events and underlying dynamics.
 Therapist interpretation involves the therapist looking for clues and sharing
interpretations when clients are ready to hear them. Three types of interpretations
are particularly important: resistance, which involves the unconscious refusal to fully
participate in therapy; transference, where clients act and feel toward the therapist
the way they do or did to someone important in their life; and the interpretation of
dreams.
 Catharsis is the reliving of past extinguish feelings, which therapists believe that
clients must experience first to settle internal conflicts and overcome their problems.
 Working spontaneously is the process of a therapist and client examining the same
issues over and overagain for a great clarification. This occurs over many sessions
and can even take years.

Scope and Delimitatios of the study

The goal of this study was to determine the impact of comprehensive cou selling

program to the students. The responses of the respondents will helped in the completion

of this study. This research was conducted during the first semester of school year 2019-

2020.

Moreover, the result of this study was only limited to the responses of the

respondents. Thus, this only tacked the perceived impact and effectivity of

comprehensive counseling program in individuals behavior and students academic

performance. Therefore, things such as cases of underling counseling and problems of

students are not included in the study.
