CELT-P Module 2 – Portfolio task

Module 2 – Developing listening and speaking skills in the primary classroom

Portfolio task – Plan, teach and evaluate a listening skills lesson for older primary learners.
Task focus: Using a variety of different task types to help learners to develop their
understanding of a listening text, to develop their interest in the recording and to get learners to
respond to the content of the recording.

Procedure

Review the content of Lessons 1, 2 and 3 of Module 2 on developing listening skills. You
can do this by:
o going back and looking again at some sections in the lessons in the online module
o reading your own notes
o talking to other teachers
o doing some more reading or research.

Select a recording to use with a class of older primary learners to develop their listening skills,
choosing a topic you think your learners will be interested in. The recording can be from your
coursebook, supplementary material or an authentic recording. Remember that the aims of the
lesson for the learners are listening for key information and listening for more detail; this should
not be a language-focused lesson.

Plan a lesson which includes the recording you have chosen:

o Use a variety of different task types, e.g. matching, labelling, ordering, choosing
options (multiple choice/true-false), completing forms and charts, gap-fill, open
activities to help your learners develop their understanding of the listening text.
o Prepare:
 a pre-listening task which will get learners interested in the topic of the recording
 a task to pre-teach vocabulary to help the learners understand the recording
 a listening task for the learners to get a general understanding of key information
in the text
 a listening task to help learners understand more detail
 a post-listening task to get learners to speak or write about the text.

Complete Part 1 of the Portfolio task template.

o Provide details of the listening text and your class.
o Write the task type you chose for each stage and the reason why you chose it.
o Complete the interaction patterns template to show how learners will work at each stage.

Teach your lesson then complete Part 2 of the Portfolio task template which is an evaluation
of the lesson and a checklist of evidence you need to submit.

Upload:
o the coursebook/supplementary book page
o the listening text
o the tasks you gave learners to do in the lesson
o the completed Portfolio task template.
