just before a noun.

"Every other week..." = "every two weeks", or "every second


week", which means the first week, then the third one, then the
fifth one, etc.

5. «Yes, Mum, I came home with Paul, but the other girls stayed
at Brenda’s party.»

"The other girls"= use of the indefinite adjective (in the singular)
in spite of the noun which is in the plural.

6. «One of my kids took the school bus, but I drove the other
one myself after going to the dentist’s with him.»

The other kid" is a nominal group in which other is an indefinite


adjective => the other one. (in order to avoid the repetition of the
noun "kid").

7. 'He showed me ten recent photos of her: six colored ones,


but the other four were either black and white or sepia. She
looks very beautiful...'

"The other four photos": contrary to what happens in several


European languages, the indefinite adjective is placed before the
numeral adjective.

8. «Of course he could go himself... On the other hand , it would


be more efficient to be represented by a lawyer...»

"On the one hand, ... on the other hand..." expresses an


alternative. The two parts of the expression are not always
expressed clearly. Sometimes, one of them only is given.

9. During the lecture, most students were listening but some


others were talking and laughing... Quite unruly and rude...

"Some others" is an indefinite pronoun in the plural, replacing the


noun "students".

10. « Don’t worry! Tomorrow, the problem will be solved one


way or another ...»
"One way or another" is the same as "one way or an other way".
[If you mean "a different [noun]", then it is more appropriate to
use "an other"; if you mean "an additional [noun]", then it is more
appropriate to use "another".]
