The Objective : The Swedish army rapidly approached the Catholic forces in an attempt to destroy it,
in the first major pitched battle between the two sides.
The Outcome : A lengthy bombardment commenced at noon and after several hours Pappenheim
and Furstenberg’s wings engaged their opponents. Pappenheim’s force was rebelled by the musket
fire from Swedish detachments. After two hours of attacking, Pappenheim’s cuirassiers were
exhausted and were swept away by a Swedish counter-attack of fresh cavalry. On the opposite flank
the Saxon army rapidly collapsed in the face of the Catholic advance. Tilly ordered his tercio’s from the
centre to support the attack on his right. Horn repositioned his force, pulling it back at an angle to meet
the new threat following the collapse of the Saxons. Unfortunately for Tilly his attack did not fall as one
blow and was disrupted by the terrain and limited counter-attacks. The fighting continued for several
more hours but the Catholic forces were eventually broken, Tilly narrowly escaped death and left the
battlefield badly wounded.
