On Monday 11/ 18/ 13 at approximately 0130 hours, R/ O (Officer Oloris/ 372) was dispatched to the address of
6 S. Union St. #2A, Elgin, IL 60213 regarding a domestic battery. Dispatch informed responding officers that a
third party caller (victim’s parents) were calling in the domestic battery and informed dispatch that they were
on the phone with the victim and it appeared to be active.

Upon arrival, officers made contact with the offender, Thomas A. Ryan, who was standing outside at the front
door. Upon making contact, R/ O asked Thomas what was going on, to which Thomas informed R/ O that he
and his girlfriend, Holly Sathern had got into a verbal argument and he was about to leave and go home.
Thomas further explained that other than the argument nothing physical occurred between himself and
Holly.

R/ O then made contact with Holly and R/ O immediately observed that she had redness and severe swelling to
the area of her nose and face. Holly also had blood all over her face and nose. She also had dried blood on her
lips and hands. Holly then informed R/ O the following in summary: Holly was home sleeping when Thomas
arrived after his shift at work at approximately 0000 hours. Thomas had been drinking and entered her room
and woke her up. Thomas began yelling at Holly and Holly sat and listened to him. Eventually Holly no longer
wanted to listen to Thomas, so she entered the bedroom and put her headphones to her ipod on her head.
Thomas did not like this action and ripped the headphones off of her head. Thomas then began slapping Holly
on the side of the face. In an attempt to stop Thomas from hitting her, she began pushing him towards the
door and told him to leave the apartment. Thomas then pushed Holly back, and Holly punched him in the
face. Thomas then punched Holly in the nose causing her nose to bleed heavily. Holly then entered the
bathroom to try and control the bleeding when she observed that her nose was in a bent position. Holly, who
occasionally boxes as a hobby, had broken her nose in the past, and recognized the injury as a broken nose.
Holly was then able to reset her nose and eventually control the bleeding.

While Holly was caring for her injuries, she and Thomas continued to argue and Thomas still refused to leave
the apartment. Holly then called her parents who in turn, called for police. While on the phone with her
parents, Holly stepped out of the apartment and was followed by Thomas. Once Thomas was outside the
apartment, Holly re-entered the apartment leaving Thomas outside. This is about the time that officers
arrived on scene.

R/ O with the assistance of Officer Ruiz/ 382 was able to take Thomas into custody without incident. During a
search incident to arrest, officers located a “one hitter” packed with a green leafy substance. The one hitter
was also emanating a scent of cut cannabis. Officer Ruiz then transported Thomas to EPD Jail to begin the
booking process. Officer Ruiz later entered the one hitter into evidence. Refer to supplement report for
further information.

R/ O remained on scene and EFD A4 and E6 were called to the scene to evaluate Holly’s injuries. Paramedics

assessed Holly’s injuries and informed that they would need to take her to the hospital to determine if her
nose was actually broken. Holly refused transport to the hospital and signed the required medical forms.
Refer to Elgin Fire Department run #13-9550 for additional information.

R/ O then took pictures of Holly’s injuries which also included swelling and bruising to both Holly’s upper
arms, and minor scratches to her lower right arm. R/ O also took pictures of the bathroom and the hallway in
front of the bathroom which contained moderate amounts of blood. The pictures were later placed into
evidence. Holly also completed a voluntary statement form which was also placed into evidence.

R/ O then relocated to the jail and met with Thomas. R/ O asked Thomas if he was willing to answer questions
relating to the incident. Thomas agreed to answer questions and R/ O read Thomas his Constitutional Rights
directly from the Constitutional Rights and Waiver Form. Thomas informed R/ O that he understood his rights,
refused to initial next to each right as requested by R/ O, however he signed the form understanding that he
was waiving his rights. Thomas informed R/ O that he never made any physical contact with Holly and that her
nose was not broken. Thomas further informed R/ O that the blood in the bathroom was his blood and that it
was caused by a cut on the back of his head he received the day before and the injury was caused by Holly.
R/ O informed Thomas that the blood appeared to be wet indicating that it was most likely fresh blood.
Thomas replied, “You just believe whatever you want to believe.” Also during the interview Thomas
informed officers that the one hitter was used to inhale cannabis. R/ O then concluded the interview.

R/ O then made contact with ASA Alex Bederaa who was briefed on the facts to the incident. Due to Holly’s
injuries Alex approved the charges for Agg. Domestic Battery (great bodily harm). Thomas was also charged
with two counts of domestic battery (bodily harm and physical contact), and one count of possession of drug
paraphernalia. Thomas was then housed in cell M-1 to await bond call.

No further action taken at this time.

On 11/18/2013 at approximately 0130 hrs I, Officer E. Ruiz #382 responded to 6 S. Union St #2a, Elgin
IL, 60123 reference a domestic battery.

Thomas Ryan was taken into custody and searched incident to arrest. During the search I located a
metal cannabis smoking pipe which contained a small amount of a green leafy substance (suspect
cannabis) inside of it. The metal cannabis smoking pipe also smelled like raw cannabis as well. I
secured the metal cannabis smoking pipe and entered it into evidence. Additionally, I submitted an
Illinois State Police laboratory form to have the metal cannabis smoking pipe and the green leafy
substance (suspect cannabis) inside, tested for the presence of cannabis. (See Officer Oloris' general
report for any further information)
